History

TECC was founded in 2011 when consultants from the HCEP became affiliated with the Office of Technology and Development (OTD) and merged with IPconnectED, a student group focused on intellectual property. Health TECC is now the exclusive student group affiliated with OTD in providing healthcare-focused consulting services.

The Health TECC experience

Health TECC members are pro-bono consultants specializing in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and medical device. Health TECC collaborates with entrepreneurs affiliated with the Office of Technology Development, the Photonics Center, BioSquare, the Fraunhofer USA Center, and the Entrepreneurial Management Institute.

Members

Health TECC members are an interdisciplinary group of graduate students composed of MBA, PhD, and medical students. This year, Health TECC aims to expand its membership to law students.

Novophage provides biological solutions for industrial biofilms and has recently received $5.75 million in funding. Michael Koeris, the CEO, who served as an HCEP consultant during his PhD candidacy at Boston University, requested HCEP’s consulting services. As advisors, HCEP:

• analyzed potential regulatory pathways for approval of a novel phage-based antimicrobial;

Good Start Genetics

Good Start Genetics provides the next generation in technology for genetic screening. HCEP contributions included:

• comparing capital financing options for large equipment purchases through financial modeling;

• identifying key opinion leaders; and• formulating recommendations that

suited the business and cash flow needs of the client.

Entra Pharmaceuticals

Entra Pharmaceuticals is a medical device company that focuses on innovative drug delivery technology. HCEP consultants:

• investigated four therapeutic areas and identified a market access strategy; and

• provided a competitive analysis of the medical device industry.

Entra Pharmaceuticals implemented many of HCEP’s recommendations, including a strategy for new productdevelopment.

Companion Diagnostics

A client with a start-up specializing in companion diagnostics approached HealthTECC, who:

• conducted primary research with prominent pathologists and oncologists to facilitate market adoption;

• performed a thorough analysis of the regulatory pathway for medical diagnostics;

• developed economic models to compare potential business structures; and

• evaluated the advantages and disadvantages in bringing the product to market as a companion diagnostic.

Medical Device

A client who developed a product for the early detection of autism utilized HealthTECC to:

• conduct primary research to evaluate factors surrounding market adoption from customer and consumer perspectives; qualified the current reimbursement landscape; quantified the value-added, which was used for value-based pricing; and

• examined HIPAA issues the client would likely encounter due to the use of HIT.
