Health and Wellness is one of the strategic priorities of The Consumer Goods Forum.

Our collaborative industry actions between retailers and manufacturers, as well as public-private partnerships, where relevant, enable us to continue working together to improve the health and wellness of people around the world.

The facts and figures:

The Drivers for Action

Noncommunicablediseases (NCDs) kill more

than 36 million people each year.

Nearly 80% of NCD deaths –

29 million - occur in low-and middle-income

countries.

More than nine million of all deaths attributed to NCDs occur

before the age of 60; 90% of these "premature" deaths

occurred in low- and middle-income countries.

Cardiovascular diseases account for most NCD deaths, or 17.3 million people annually,

followed by cancers (7.6 million), respiratory diseases (4.2 million), and diabetes (1.3

million 1).

These four groups of diseases account for around 80% of all

NCD deaths.

They share four risk factors: tobacco use, physical inactivity, the harmful use of alcohol and

unhealthy diets.

The Drivers for Action

Health & Wellness identified as one of the 5 megatrends

with the highest relevance for the consumer goods and retail industry

• Growing private market for health products and services

• Stronger engagement of society in health issues and healthy products

• Growing share of population suffering from illnesses

• Convergence of industries (healthy cosmetics, functional food)

• The Health and Wellness Initiative aims to equip the industry with a thought leadership and collaboration platform on non-competitive health and wellness questions among manufacturers, retailers and their common stakeholders

• The Health and Wellness initiative has committed to report annually and publically on its progress on the implementation of Health and Wellness Resolutions

• Performance assessment in health and wellness will show commitment and progress on implementing the Health and Wellness Resolutions

• To enable the Health and Wellness core team establish a strong platform on which to engage stakeholders a system of measurement & reporting is fundamental. Stakeholders have moved from "tell me" to "prove it” with health and wellness

• The annual report will aim to help CGF achieve wider and faster health and wellness progress , but also will better engage key stakeholders as industry metrics will be clear, meaningful, credible and reliable

• CGF will leverage industry experience by including learnings from regional and national established measurement and reporting systems through the members of the Liaison Group

• The measurement mechanism will not rank CGF members. The report will enable us to speak with one industry voice and highlight our progress

• CGF member companies will be able to individually benchmark their progress in a confidentialmanner

These programsreached more than 100,000 associates . In 2012, we continued to place messages on all of our packaging encouraging people to practice at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day.
