Assignment:
Over 44% of residents in Cayuga County are overweight or obese. This is a major health issue for families, and is a costly one for the county. In 2008 a Leadership Cayuga team completed a project that explored ways to encourage healthy living. Your team will that this to the next level, and create a pilot program in Cayuga County to incentivize residents to lose weight and adopt healthy lifestyle changes, with the long term goal of a larger initiative based on this model.
Concept:
To create a fun, healthy contest between the school districts in Cayuga County.
Goals:
To promote healthy eating habits and daily activity starting at a young age.
To get the whole family involved. To raise awareness of the high obesity rate among Cayuga County
residents.
Eligibility:
All Elementary and Middle Schools in the Auburn, Cato-Meridian, Port Byron, Weedsport, Moravia, Union Springs, and Southern Cayuga districts are eligible for the contest.
Official Rules:
1. The contest will run for 4 weeks. The goal of the contest is to accumulate as many points on each students’ Scorecard each week as possible through eating healthy and doing healthy activities. Scorecards will be distributed to classrooms on Monday of each week for the four weeks.
2. Each Scorecard has spaces for each day of the week (Monday through Sunday) for: eating vegetables, eating fruit, doing a healthy activity and skipping an unhealthy activity. When a student does these things, they may place a sticker on the corresponding space on the Scorecard. If the activity or meal includes a family member, the student should write the letter “F” on the sticker to record this. Points scoring information is on the Scorecard.
3. The Scorecard needs to be signed by the parent and returned on the following Monday. Schools will collect all Scorecards and calculate the average class score and overall school score. Summary sheets should be submitted to Dino Fred & Barney CPS’s LLP, who will serve as the official scorekeepers and post weekly updates on their web site.
4. At the end of the contest prizes will be awarded to the 7 winning schools in each district, the overall school winner from the combined districts and individual winners for boys and girls in each grade.
Prizes to be awarded to Schools within each district as follows:
First Prize
The School with the highest overall average Class Points will receive sports equipment, including baseball, basketball, soccer and other sports’ related items. Students will also receive t-shirts identifying them as the winning school.
Second Prize
The School with the second highest overall average Class Points will receive books with healthy activities, eating tips and fun family activities for each student.
The overall winning School will receive a full, newly installed Deluxe Playground in addition to the above listed prizes!
For each grade across all districts, the overall highest scoring boy and girl will receive a package including a gift certificate to a local sporting goods store, exercise equipment, a sports bottle and a plaque.
Prizes will be awarded at the conclusion of the contest. All decisions made by the scorekeepers are considered final!
Marketing Strategy:
Meeting with each of the School Districts to discuss the program would be the first step in our process. Once the schools decide to implement the Program we would then like the public to be aware in order to get their involvement.
The School Districts would be responsible to get the students to join and get the paperwork to them and to their families. This would be thru the School web-sites, take- home letters and the School Bulletins along with flyers throughout the Community. We would like to utilize the mass media to get the word out about the Program once the schools decide to proceed with it. The local newspaper, The Citizen, would have the kick-off article to let the public be aware that this was going on and what the Program entails.
Weekly updates would be posted on School web-sites, the local papers and possibly the local news program. The Healthy Cayuga Facebook page would also post updates on the school point system.
Once the program has ended after the four weeks another article in The Citizen would post winners and have a photo to include the District winners. Also another blurb on the local News regarding the outcome would serve as a follow-up. Healthy Cayuga Facebook page would also have listings of the final points and District winners along with the School web-sites.
Materials:
The materials will be produced by the County Health Department and passed to students and parents as shown in the following chart:
Scorecards:
All participants will receive a scorecard and sheet of stickers at the beginning of each week of the contest.
Putting the stickers in the boxes allows the participants as well as the official counters keep track of the scoring.
Parent signatures are required to make sure they are aware of the contest and that the participants are supervised appropriately.
