Healthy Choices at the Holiday TableThis is the time of year to eat, drink and be merry. It’s possible to indulge in the flavors of the season and dish up a healthy holiday plate with a few simple food swaps:

While ham and prime rib are popular holiday entrees, turkey is a healthier protein pick. Opt for a slice of lean turkey breast rather than a piece of dark meat, and you’ll save about 70 calories per portion.

Instead of a roll with butter, reach for the fresh vegetables, which are lower in calories; plus, their fiber will help fill you up. Just be wary of high-fat dips that often accompany a veggie tray.

When selecting a side dish, sweet potatoes — packed with vitamins A and C and potassium — are a smart swap for traditional mashed potatoes or deep-fried latkes.

For dessert, fresh fruit salad is the healthiest treat to satisfy a sweet tooth. If you saved room for pie, experts say pumpkin is one of the better options since the filling is high in nutrients. And because it only has a bottom crust, it’s lower in fat and calories.

What a Dog-Gone Party

The Rock of New YorkRockefeller Center is a vibrant and popular New York City landmark, created as a first-of-its-kind “city within a city.”

The 22-acre plaza was the brainchild of oil heir and philanthropist John D. Rockefeller Jr., who envisioned a modern commercial complex in the heart of midtown Manhattan. Built between 1931 and 1940, the project was personally financed by Rockefeller, a venture that helped restore the city’s morale and employed thousands of workers during the Depression.

The original complex of 14 high-rises was the first in the world to feature business offices, retail shops, restaurants and entertainment in one development. The skyscrapers’ heights and modern advances, such as high-speed elevators, indoor parking, an underground concourse, more than 100 pieces of public art, and art deco architecture, all symbolized progress to new frontiers.

Some of the attractions of today’s 19 buildings include NBC network headquarters and studios; the Top of the Rock Observation Deck, which offers panoramic views of the city; and Radio City Music Hall, where the world-famous Rockettes perform.

On average, about 400,000 people visit Rockefeller Center every day, and the number can double during the holiday season, when they come to enjoy its iconic decorations, ice skating rink and shows.
