At long last, the Lake Flower elevator project is underway. Originally scheduled to start July 5, problems with obtaining the correct parts and scheduling the work crew postponed the start to mid-September.
On Tuesday, September 20, a large (very large) crane arrived on-site to remove used equip-ment from the elevator machine room and bring new equipment into the elevator machine room. The room’s rooftop location in the midst of a sizeable solar pan-el array, on a building whose siting presents many physical challenges, made for an exercise requiring careful planning and exacting implementation. With all credit going to the crane crew from Luck Brothers and the gang from Bay State Elevator Compa-ny (BSEC), everything went per-fectly – not one snag.
BSEC estimates it will take six to eight weeks per elevator to complete the work. So, if all proceeds smoothly, everything will be done by year’s end. For the most part, the BSEC team of Tom and Corey will be here Mondays through Thursdays.
While this project is underway, everything possible is being done to minimize disturbance and inconvenience. Your understanding and patience are appreciated.
I also want to acknowledge the installation of the new intercom/entry system at the Lake Flower Apartments. David and his team will address any glitches that arise. Do not hesitate to contact David or Tammy if you have questions about its operation.

TID BITS FROM DAVID SIEGRIST
Fire Prevention Week is October 9th -15th. We encourage all parents
to sit down and discuss the importance of fire safety with their chil-
dren. Review fire safety materials sent home with kids and explore the
internet for interactive sites that teach them what they need to know to
stay safe. Please take the time to discuss what precautions should be
taken and plan escape routes.
There has been some confusion about what to do in the event of a fire
at the Lake Flower Apartments. Residents, please take time to review
the placard that is on the backside of your entry door. This indicates
the location of your apartment relative to the building layout. It also
shows the locations of exits, fire pull boxes and extinguishers.
High-rise buildings are constructed to be fire proof. It’s the contents of
the building which pose the major hazard. Should these materials
catch fire, they may produce a lot of heat and smoke. The sprinkler
system, that completely covers the Lake Flower complex, will be acti-
vated in specific areas if temperatures rise sufficiently, aiding in extin-
guishing the fire. Please be aware that smoke may still be present even
if the fire is out.
If the fire is in your apartment, you should get everyone out of your
unit and close the door. Pull the alarm if it is not already activated.
Then proceed down the stairway to a safe location. The elevators will
not be running normally as they are programmed to proceed to the first
floor to let any passengers off and allow use by fire personnel. If the
fire is not in your apartment, follow the instructions on the back of
your door. Do not proceed into smoke filled hallways. Close the door
and seal the bottom with wet towels. Stay near windows to be visible
to firefighters. If need be, you will be evacuated.
Both complexes are tied into a central alarm system that alerts the fire
department directly should an alarm be activated. All of our internal
systems are inspected annually and serviced accordingly with safety
being our number one concern.
Should any one have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
Planning ahead can save your life! Have a nice month.

The Activities Committee has a lot planned for October. There will be an ice cream social, monthly social and the monthly luncheon. Watch the calendar and bulletin boards for other news.
“Hate. It has caused a lot of problems in
this world but has not solved one yet.”
~Maya Angelou~
Where should you look?
Mattress (piping, sides, underside)
Box spring (remove ticking)
Bed frame
Linens
Furniture – seams, pleats, piping, joints
Corners and drawers of desks, dressers, etc.
Door, window, and baseboard trim
Items on the floor
What should you look for?
All life stages: eggs, nymphs, adults
Skin casts
Blood spots
How do you avoid them?
Carefully inspect all used furniture, linens, and clothing be-
fore bringing them into your home.
Wash and dry clothes on hottest setting items can
stand. Transport clothes in plastic bags. Do not
put clean clothes in bags used to transport dirty
clothes. Throw those away!
Vacuum frequently.
Remove clutter.
If possible, use a high powered flashlight when looking
around your unit. If you find a bed bug, notify staff immedi-
ately. Staff and you will work together to prepare for any
needed treatment. Don’t delay. It’s much easier to treat one or
two than it is twenty or thirty. Again, successful eradication
requires resident involvement and cooperation.
The sooner we know, the lower the cost to you.

The summit of Whiteface offers a 360-degree view of the Adi-rondacks. Glimpses of Vermont and Canada can be seen when the sky is very clear.
New York State has over 561 waterfalls. The falls in Essex coun-ty account for 6.60% of all the falls in the state.
The Adirondack Park at about 6.1 million acres is larger than Yellowstone (2.2 million acres), Yosemite (0.76 million acres), Glacier (1 million acres), Grand Canyon (1.2 million acres), Great Smokies (.5 million acres) National parks combined.
The names of both the Village of Lake Placid, surrounding Mir-ror Lake, and the Village of Saranac Lake, surrounding Lake Flower, do not reflect the lakes located in them.
While being driven from Tahawus Club near Mt. Marcy to North Creek, in the early morning hours of September 14, 1901, then-Vice President Theodore Roosevelt learned that President Wil-liam McKinley had died at 2:30 AM. At North Creek station, Roo-sevelt was sworn in as the 26th President of the United States.
Ampersand Mountain, a 3300-foot peak in the High Peaks re-gion, was made bald by Verplanck Colvin during his 19th Centu-ry survey. He used Ampersand as a survey station and ordered the removal of all the trees from the summit; now nothing but bare rock remains.
About 7-10 million tourists visit the Adirondack park every year, while only about five million people travel to view the Grand Canyon annually.
The Adirondack Mountains have an uplift growth rate of one foot every 100 years, which is about 0.12 inches per year.
The word Adirondack comes from the Mohawk Indian word ratirontaks, which means “tree eaters.” This name was given to the neighboring Algonquin-speaking tribes as an insult because when food was low, the Algonquins could be seen eating buds and bark of trees.
Whiteface Mountain’s highest lift unloads passengers at about 4,386 feet, which has a vertical drop of 3,166 feet all the way to the base. After reaching the summit of Whiteface, there is an unmaintained wilderness area known as The Slides that is rare-ly open, due to safety hazards. With the addition of The Slides, which are 264 feet higher and require hiking to get to, White-face Mountain has the greatest continual vertical drop in the Northeast United States at about 3,430 feet.
The Great Forest Fires of 1903 and 1908 devastated nearly one million acres of forest in the Adirondacks.
