The Rotary Club of Belleville is preparing a performance as a special benefi t concert

to raise funds for the Trenton Military Family Resource Centre (MFRC) on Nov. 8.

Called Hits of the Blitz, the performance will be a commemoration in song of the great war years and will feature tenor Julian Gallo, Lenny Graf and his Platinum Orchestra and Lenni Stewart in a matinee performance at 2 p.m. and an evening performance at 7:30 p.m. at the Centennial Secondary School audito-rium at 160 Palmer Road in Belleville. Tickets are $25 per person and can be purchased at the Trenton MFRC, at Finkle Electric, through www.rotary-belleville.org or from any Quinte area Rotarian.

“We were really pleased when the Rotary Club of Belleville, Chris Finkle and one of the performers, Julian Gallo, came to us and iden-tifi ed the Trenton MFRC as an organization they would like to support,” noted Devon Tay-lor, Communications and Development Coor-dinator for MFRC. “We’re super excited about it because all of the proceeds from the tickets goes directly back to the Trenton MFRC and goes to supporting military families, so we’re really hoping to get a good turnout for both shows.”

Apart from the featured entertaining artists singing the songs which linked the combat-ants of both World Wars with their friends and

family back home, these two performances may also feature some special guests from the mili-tary community, stated Miss. Taylor, although that information will be confi rmed next week.

“It’s a special benefi t concert celebrating Re-membrance Day, the 70th anniversary of World War II and the liberation of Netherlands by Ca-nadian troops, so it’s sort of a three-fold cele-bration,” said Miss. Taylor. “We feel it’s perfect timing.”

The Trenton MFRC hopes to turn this event into an annual fundraising performance, she indicated.

“We’re hoping it will turn into something that will happen every year around the same time. It’s fi tting that it’s just around Remem-brance Day because we have troops deployed to all different parts of the world and it just seems like a perfect fi t,” she said.

The support of a service club like the Rota-ry Club of Belleville is also important for the Trenton MFRC, she added.

“We’re just so pleased to have the support of service clubs like the Rotary Club of Belleville and we’re really looking forward to building a stronger partnership with them and other part-ners in the community.”

Those with questions about the performance or wishing to purchase tickets can do so by call-ing the Trenton MFRC at 613-965-3575 or www.rotary-Belleville.org

Family violence means an abuse of power within a relationship

Take A Stand!Family Violence Prevention

General Awareness of family, trust or dependen-cy, and includes many forms of abusive behavior. Examples include emotional abuse, psychological abuse, criminal harassment, neglect, fi nancial ex-ploitation, destruction of property, injury to pets, physical assault, sexual assault and homicide.

Family violence has both short and long term ef-fects. Children who witness violence in the home suffer emotional abuse as a consequence.

Abusive behavior often results in the person feel-ing afraid and controlled.

Family violence happens in all cultural, racial, and religious groups and at all income and rank levels.

Family violence in any form is a priority issue within the Canadian Armed Forces.

Family violence is a very private and emotionally charged issue. It is a diffi cult topic to talk about.

Individuals may still be too fearful to come for-ward and seek assistance for issues related to vio-lence and/or abuse.

The unfortunate part of this scenario is that a problem left unaddressed, can escalate.

The Canadian Armed Forces is committed to raising awareness and strengthening its response to family violence through accessible resources, prevention and support services.

If you are experiencing or witnessing family vio-lence…seek help!

Warkworth Institution wins

fourth annual Herc Pull for the

third straight year

duced a fantastic result, “…just north of $3,000 raised for the United Way of Quinte,” noted Capt. Daniel Desjardins, of 424 Squadron (Sqn.), after the event. That demonstrated an increase of over $1,000 from last year’s event.

Despite cold winds out on the tarmac at 1 Hangar, the event pro-

duced a lot of fun as part of the ongoing Govern-ment of Canada Workplace Charitable Campaign for 8 Wing/CFB Trenton. Thirteen teams took part, a charitable barbecue helped fuel that fun and some good-natured ribbing also took place between teams and squadrons from the base and the surrounding communities.

Acting Wing Commanding Lieutenant-Colonel (Lt.-Col.) Ryan Deming of 426 Sqn. kicked off the fun at the start of the event when he promised to have the brakes on when the Warkworth team started their pull.

“This event truly showcases 8 Wing’s ability to work with our community partners to build strong communities and also shows our dedication to give back to our communities that support us and our families throughout our time at 8 Wing,” he said.

Judi Gilbert, the executive director of the United Way of Quinte, was thrilled to be able to attend this year’s event and to be among those who support this annual event on the base.

“I’m amazed at the number of folks who support this event and I would just like to say thank you to everybody. 8 Wing is a huge supporter of United Way of Quinte. We have over 100 programs we support throughout Hastings and Prince Edward counties and without the support of CFB Trenton, we would not be a $2 million organization. Thank you for com-ing out today and thank you for your continuous sup-port of all the agencies we support,” she indicated.

The event does not get any easier each year, even

Judi Gilbert, the executive di-rector of the United Way of Quinte, had only words of praise for the e ort of 8 Wing through the Herc Pull.

if they weren’t adding weight to the aircraft. The 13 teams pulled in the fi rst round and only the top fi ve teams advanced to the sec-ond round. Three teams from that round advance to the third round and the top two teams pulled for the championship trophy and brag-ging rights.

This year’s pull mirrored last year’s pull to a remarkable degree. 8 Air Mobility Squadron (AMS) was the team beaten out of the fi -nal three when they were narrowly shaded by 424 Sqn.’s Maintenance team by .23 of a second. 424 Sqn. won with a time of 21.70 while 8 AMS had a time of 21.93. Wark-worth won that round with a time of 19.87.

424 Sqn.’s time fell off in the fi -nal pull to 20.87 while Warkworth maintained an under 20 second mark for the second year, coming just .11 seconds off setting a new record despite the heavier aircraft.

There was of course a bit of lament-ing after the final pull.

Lt.-Col. Dany Poitras, the Command-ing Officer of 424 Sqn., said to the Wark-worth squad, “Guys, you’re killing me.

I offered to be on my team this year to win and once again we came second. I guess next year I’m going to have to feed them more and get their weight up a bit to pull that thing harder,” he joked.

Derek Webb, the three-time captain

effort together as the day progressed as they were gradually improving their time…until the last pull.

“That extra burger we had for the charity barbe-cue probably made the difference,” he laughed. “We were all jokingly saying that as of tomorrow, we’re all in the gym, we’re going to start doing squats to get beefed up legs and next year we’ll put a team back on the tarmac.”

Capt. Desjardins felt the pull always produces good spirits and friendly competition, both from the military and the civilian teams.

“They’re good sportsmen,” he said. “They’re al-ways happy to applaud us on and shake our hands. We’re very happy to have them as competitors and to see them win.”

That of course will not stop them from trying to come out again next year to win that beautiful Her-cules trophy.

“Bragging rights are worth everything,” he chuckled.

424 Sqn. Maintenance team strains during their final pull of the day for a time of 20.87, more than a second behind the Warkworth team.

To show there were no hard feelings, the two top teams – Warkworth Institution and 424 Sqn. Maintenance – posed together for this trophy picture at the end of the day.

of the Warkworth team, said there is really no secret to winning this event.

“Teamwork and communication dur-ing the transition of the pull are the se-crets,” he said. “We have someone who calls out the commands to the team and that lets everyone work together,” he said.

Mr. Webb said the team takes care of itself physically by getting out to the gym but noted the team just goes out to the competition and kind of figures it out as they go.

“It’s more about the teamwork and coordination than anything else. Hav-ing the size helps, but if you’re not co-ordinated, you’re not going to do well,” he added.

Capt. Desjardins found it hard to talk after the event, having yelled so much throughout it, but he said the pull gave him a different perspective of that air-craft.

“To actually pull a Herc and feel its weight as opposed to flying a Herc and not feeling any weight is quite an in-credible feeling and on top of that, the overriding feeling is participating in a good cause and giving back,” he said.

His team seemed to be getting their

Lt.-Col. Dany Poitras of 424 Sqn. tried to lead his team to vic-tory, but will have to pull a little harder to achieve that goal next year.

A wraparound veranda and an arch-top dormer window add to the exterior appeal of this single-level design. With its open living areas and flexible floor plan, the home would be ideal for either a growing family or for empty nesters.

The den, just off the sky lit foyer, is particularly at-tractive, with a sloping ceil-ing, bay window and a view of the front garden. If the homeowners need a third bedroom, this room could easily serve that purpose.

An archway off the hall leads to the open living area at the rear of the house, where the family will have plenty of space for all their daily activities. The kitchen is a delight, with a walk-in pantry and a central island, R0

The dining room, which is large enough for en-tertaining, has a sloping ceiling and is designed to accommodate an optional buffet, if desired. On one side, a door opens to the ve-randa and at the rear, slid-ing glass doors offer access

to a covered patio. The expansive great room

also has a sloping ceiling, as well as a corner fireplace. Large windows make sure this whole area is bright with natural light. Double doors open to the master suite, which has a boxed-out window overlooking the back garden.

A four-piece en suite bathroom includes a cor-

ner soaker tub and a sepa-rate shower. The second bedroom also has a boxed-out window and is located immediately alongside the main bathroom. The double garage has a side door and access to the house through the laundry room.

September 2015 made up for the late start of summer temperatures we had this year. There

was only one record broken (barely) for daily max-imum temperature on the 7th at 30.7C, just nudg-ing past the previous record of 30.0C set back in 1959.

The average daily maximum temperature for September this year was 23.5C, a few degrees high-er than last year, which was 21.4C. Average daily minimum temperatures were 12.8C, up a little from 9.8C of 2014. The single warmest day was on the 7th, with a high of 30.7C, and the coldest night was on the 30th, with a daily minimum of 6.3C.

September this time around was wetter than last year as well. Rainfall totals for 2015 were 85.3mm, where total rainfall for September 2014 was only 51.8mm. This is mostly thanks to two rainy days near the middle of the month. The rainiest day was on the 13th, at 23.5mm. No snow was recorded either this year or last year.

The number of days with thunderstorms record-ed is the same as last year, at two, though Septem-ber 2015 saw seven days where fog was recorded, six days more than in 2014.

Current climate outlooks for the month of Oc-tober indicate the possibility of slightly warmer than average temperatures, with no strong indi-cation of it being either a wetter or dryer month than climate normal.

MFRC,PSP celebrate the volunteer contributions

Andrew Kerik, CANEX Supermart Manager, presents a cheque of $3,950. To Wen-dy Synnott, volunteer coordinator at the MFRC, and Kendra Lafleur, the manager of Fitness, Sports and Recreation, to go towards their Volunteer Recognition Pro-gram. Photo by Ross Lees

Continued from page 1Mrs. Snider told every volunteer in the

room that they seldom know just how many people they are affecting by volunteering.

“You never know whose life you’re chang-ing – it could be your co-volunteer,” she said. “You make the difference not only in the agen-cies you’re working with, but with the people you’re working with, as well.”

She also told the volunteers to make sure they bring their children and youth to their volunteer opportunities and she presented them with some fantastic statistics.

“I am passionate about our youth and the only way our youth are going to become en-gaged is if we as adults engage them. Last year, over six weeks, I had 1201 youth complete over 12,000 volunteer hours,” she noted to the astonishment of her audience.

There is another key reason people volun-teer or get volunteered, Mrs. Snider indicated. She told about a woman who came to her one time about six months after her husband re-tired. She told Mrs. Snider to find him a volun-teer opportunity or find him a place to live to the amusment of the women in the room.

Organizations and groups are very protec-tive of their volunteers, according to Mrs. Snider, but she added that the more agencies and groups open doors for their volunteers, the better chance they have of keeping them.

“That opens doors for other possibilities built on your interests, your skill sets and your availability,” she noted.

She told the volunteers to never under-value their contributions to their groups and organizations but she also asked that they never over-tax themselves because they were so important to those groups and organiza-tions.

“We cannot ever deliver the programs and services in our community without you. Do not ever undervalue your importance,” she stated. “Volunteers help with everything. No organization or group will ever have the money or the manpower to be able to do all of this on their own.”

In closing, Mrs. Snider demonstrated how much value she put on volunteers.

“I think every day should be national vol-unteer day because I think that lots of times we hear, ‘I’m just a volunteer.’ No you’re not

just a volunteer. You change people’s lives. Lots of times when we volunteer, the life we change is our own, but you change people’s lives,” she stated emphatically.

Her words were echoed by a veritable flood of base personnel and executives all intent on thanking their volunteers.

Perhaps top of that list was 8 Wing Com-mander Colonel (Col.) Colin Keiver, who noted that wing personnel couldn’t continue to do their jobs without the help of the many volun-teers at the MFRC or PSP.

MFRC executive director Tamara Klein-schmidt noted that volunteering adds a great deal of value to the lives of volunteers and she recalled her first foray into a MFRC to volun-teer as being “life changing” and the first step on her way to becoming the executive director of the Trenton MFRC.

Kendra Lafleur, the manager of Fitness, Sports and Recreation, also noted that deployed operations on the base would not be possible without all the volunteers who affect the lives of military personnel and their families.

“Thank you for your support,” she said. “You add tremendous value to our programs.”

Wendy Synnott, volunteer coordinator at the MFRC, likened volunteers to raindrops, adding that many great things grow from their contributions.

“What you do does matter,” she told the many volunteers at Baker Island Community Centre Wednesday night.

She backed up her statement with some numbers, noting that 10,433 volunteer hours had been tracked through her organization last year and she felt about 20 per cent more hours were not tracked.

“In our organization, volunteers helped raised approximately $104,000 last year,” she indicated. “Your value to us and to other or-ganizations and groups in the community is immeasurable and you don’t know how much difference you have made in someone’s life. You may have helped reset their disaster clock.”

Mrs. Synnott said she had the greatest job in the world and she enjoyed working with so many people ready to give so much back to their communities, adding that members of military families were very eager to give of their time and talents to help the military members at 8 Wing/CFB Trenton.
