We may hold Bible studies and small groups. We may comply with theological and denomina- tional strictures. We may play alongwith all these things, but if we do not show mercy, if we do not welcome the stranger in Christs name, if we do not swim against the cultural currents of greed, violence, and fear, if we do not love as Christ loves, we must confess that we practice nothing more than religion. When that happens, we are fakes. If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels . . . if I have prophetic powers and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to move mountains . . . if give away all my possessions, and if hand over my body so that I may boast, but do not have love (and mercy!), I am a fake. The Newsletter of Jonesborough Presbyterian Church* ‘Hebron’ was the original name of the 1790 congregation that is now Jonesborough Presbyterian Church.

March, 2015

Dear Friends, The Charlotte Observer has a feature it calls “The Buzz.” In this weekly offering, “buzzers” may write anything they want in no more than fifteen anonymous words. “The Buzz” is basically an ideological free-for-all. Sometimes it’s more like an idiot-illogical free-for-all. While it can be pretty funny, I wonder if responsible journalism really encourages folks to display arrogance, prejudice, and outrage without taking responsibility for such rants? Does that build up the community that a local paper informs and serves? Still, more often than I like to admit, when we got the Observer and I came across “The Buzz,” my dark side would grin as I imagined some toothy remark drawing blood. I remember one old buzzer throwing out this pearl before the swine: “Religion is like wrestling. Everyone knows it’s fake, but we play along.”

Now, I imagine that the buzzer aimed his remark at people of faith more than at wrestlers and their rabid fans. But as a Christian pastor I think that buzzer was onto something, more than he/she was aware of, and more than we “religious folk” might want to admit. “Professional” wrestling is a kind of religion itself. It gener-ates passionate energy and huge crowds. Worshipers flock to the arenas and gather around their TV sets to bow before the roped-off altar of staged violence. They listen to malicious litanies of hate. They raise their hands and voices in thundering choruses of ap-proval and thanksgiving as spandex-clad priests and martyrs slap, kick, fling and otherwise pummel each other mercilessly about the ring. And there’s the one place where wrestling seems to be truly genuine – mercilessness. For its part, the Church may say all the right things, send its money to all the right people and places. We may hold Bible studies and small groups. We may comply with theological and denomina-tional strictures. We may “play along” with all these things, but if we do not show mercy, if we do not welcome the stranger in Christ’s name, if we do not swim against the cultural currents of greed, violence, and fear, if we do not love as Christ loves, we must confess that we practice nothing more than religion. When that happens, we are fakes. “If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels . . . if I have prophetic powers and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to move mountains . . . if give away all my possessions, and if hand over my body so that I may boast, but do not have love” (and mercy!), I am a fake.

Pastor’s Page continued from page 1 Because we all sin and fall short of the glory of God, we all have something “fake” about us, even something in our lives of faith. Whatever that may be for you, I challenge you to give that up for Lent. No more playing along. May we all become authentic, loving, and merciful followers of Jesus. All the way to through Friday and into Sunday. Now that should cause a buzz. Peace, Allen

*March Family Luncheon Note:

Please allow all visitors with their hosts, or anyone having difficulty standing or walking move to the front of the serving line during our luncheon. Thank you.

Friday March 20th * First Day of Spring

Each year, in the wee hours of a Sunday morning in March, 60 minutes vanish from the clock and the time reappears each year in November! No, it’s not a magic trick — it’s Daylight Saving Time!

Daylight Saving Time (or “Summer Time,” as it’s known in many parts of the world) was created to make better use of the long sunlight hours of the summer. By “springing” clocks forward

an hour in March, we move an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening. On the first Sunday in November, we “fall back” and rewind our clocks to return to Standard Time.

But where did Daylight Saving Time come from? And how is it useful?

The idea was first suggested in an essay by Benjamin Franklin in 1784, and later proposed to British Parliament by Englishman William Willett 1907. However, it did not become a standard

practice in the United States until 1966. Daylight Saving Time was originally instituted in the United States during World War I and World War II in order to

take advantage of longer daylight hours and save energy for the war production.

In the years after World War II, individual states and communities decided whether they wanted to continue observing Daylight Saving Time and when to do so. This meant some cities were

an hour behind others even though they were only separated by a few miles on a map.

In order to minimize the confusion, Congress passed the Uniform Time Act in 1966, which standardized the length of Daylight Saving Time for the country.
