PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

1st OLD TESTAMENT LESSON ~ Isaiah 1: 10-18 ~ Page 586 in the pew Bible

Hear the word of the LORD, you rulers of Sodom! Give ear to the teaching of our God,

you people of Gomorrah! “What to me is the multitude of your sacrifices? says the LORD; I

have had enough of burnt offerings of rams and the fat of fed beasts; I do not delight in the

blood of bulls, or of lambs, or of he-goats. When you come to appear before me, who re-

quires of you this trampling of my courts? Bring no more vain offerings; incense is an abomi-

nation to me. New moon and sabbath and the calling of assemblies – I cannot endure iniquity

and solemn assembly. Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hates; they have

become a burden to me, I am weary of bearing them. When you spread forth your hands, I

will hide my eyes from you; even though you make many prayers, I will not listen; your

hands are full of blood. Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your

doings from before my eyes; cease to do evil, learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppres-

sion; defend the fatherless, plead for the widow. Come now, let us reason together, says the

LORD: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red

like crimson, they shall become like wool.”

2nd OLD TESTAMENT LESSON ~ Habakkuk 1: 1-4; 2: 1-4 ~ Page 811 in the pew Bible

The oracle of God which Habakkuk the prophet saw. O LORD, how long shall I cry for

help, and you will not hear? Or cry to you “Violence!” and you will not save? Why do you

make me see wrongs and look upon trouble? Destruction and violence are before me; strife

and contention arise. So the law is slacked and justice never goes forth. For the wicked sur-

round the righteous, so justice goes forth perverted.

I will take my stand to watch, and station myself on the tower, and look forth to see what

he will say to me, and what I will answer concerning my complaint. And the LORD answered

me: “Write the vision; make it plain upon tablets, so the one who reads it may run to deliver

the message. For still the vision awaits its time; it hastens to the end – it will not lie. If it

seems slow, wait for it; it will surely come, it will not delay. Behold, the one whose soul is

not upright within shall fail, but the righteous shall live by his faith.”

GOSPEL LESSON ~ Luke 19: 1-10 ~ Page 912 in the pew Bible

He [Jesus] entered Jericho and was passing through. And there was a man named Zac-

Page 2: HEBRON PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH L: Friends, believe the good ...1].pdf · Come now, let us reason together, says the L ORD: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as

chaeus; he was a chief tax collector, and rich. He sought to see who Jesus was, but could

not, on account of the crowd, because he was small of stature. So he ran on ahead and

climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was to pass that way. And when Jesus

came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, make haste and come down;

for I must stay at your house today.” So he made haste and came down, and he received

him joyfully. And when they saw it they all murmured, “He has gone in to be the guest of

a man who is a sinner.” And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, the half

of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have defrauded any one of anything, I restore it

fourfold.” And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is

a descendant of Abraham. For the Son of man came to seek and to save the lost.”

L: This is the word of the Lord;

P: Thanks be to God.
