by Darold Shirwo The New Year, 2020, and Corona-Virus has turned the world upside down and I am sure it has affected all of you as much as it has done to me; I do like not having all those crazy drivers on the road like before but many of my friends and business associates are feeling the unbearable pressure of not having any income, as I am sure it bears on all our members.

The board has canceled the spring meet and a social tour because of the stay at home and other chapters are doing the same to keep members safe - my cliché is "stay safe" and when I read about these people that are having Corona parties I shiver in my bootsteps because we do not have enough information to isolate the virus or can pinpoint the exact cause.

The club is still on track with having the fall meet at Corvette Mike's and it would seem rea-sonable to expect for that to take place, in addition when the stay at home is liberalized we will try to get our social events back on track.

This year’s holiday brunch is going to be at Verity Hobbs Newport Beach home.

It is also important for the club to know that the board is now having monthly meetings by vid-eo conferencing. Thanks to the hard work of Jerry Louer and Ed Vignone and as we have so-licited members to join the board. it is now easier than ever to participate since it can be done from the comfort of BOD home/office.

Members will still be able to attend Chapter BOD meetings at our Chapter Meets and at our General meeting at the holiday brunch. The BOD meeting minutes will be published in the Bonding Strip.

With great regret I will let you know that both Pat and Kay Collins have passed away (See be-low).

Noteworthy that Costco is open at 8 AM on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for seniors and they have lots of TP.

As always - "Save the Wave".

    Patrick Collins

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Patrick Collins on Saturday, April 4 in Colo-rado where he had recently moved. He was preceded in death by his lifetime love Kay five months ago. Patrick was an SCC member for over 37 years and served as Chairman, Judging Chairman. and was a former Marine. Susan Michelle Gillette

Susan passed away on Thursday, February 20, 2020. She is survived by her Husband Andy. Su-san was a resident of Lake Forest, California at the time of passing. She was a SCC/NCRS long time member #1013.

    By Hector Guzman

I’ve been meaning to write this article for some time now. The article is about my 1967 Corvette’s Duntov Award. It is also about the people that I met, the people that helped me achieve this award and the lessons I learned along the way.

The 67’s story begins, indirectly, as far back as 1984. Fresh out of college I had just started a job with a law firm while waiting to begin law school and needed a car. I had always wanted a mid-year Corvette and ended up purchasing my 66 390/427 red convertible that summer. Probably not one of my more practical decisions but I was young and foolish. It did however make for one remarkably enjoyable and memorable summer. Still own the 66.

While learning to work on the 66, I met and became friends with Carlos Vivas. He convinced me to join NCRS. Carlos was always very giving with his time and knowledge of Corvette’s. Thanks' to Carlos for his time and friendship.

Carlos introduced me to David Sokolowski and the endless supply of parts for my 66 was just down the street. Thanks David. Still looking for a deal from you!

These connections, years of working on the 66 and many NCRS events and NCRS resources would prove to be beneficial many years later when in 2018 the 67 received the Duntov Award.

In 2015, I saw the 67 at Steve LuVisi’s shop in Huntington Beach. Dale had just passed away and Steve was preparing the car for sale on behalf of Dale’s estate. More about Steve later. The car was previously owned by Collector Jerome Shinkay, Hall of Fame racer Dale Armstrong and Hall of Fame baseball player Reggie Jackson. Dale, who was good friends with Reggie, traded a Dodge Hemi to Reggie for the L71 67. Reggie had the car from 1985 to 1995 and Dale from 1995 to 2015. As you can imagine, neither of these two put mileage on the car. Both had extensive car collec-tions and very little time to drive them. The car

had 14,933 miles on the odometer when I bought it.

The 67 needed work but its originality was remarkable. The car had its tank sticker, still on the tank. The car’s body had never been taken off the frame, still showing some of its original factory markings on the chas-sis. The car was repainted once in the early seventies by the second owner and Dale had modified the ex-haust and carburetors. Dale’s modifications were easily fixed since Dale had kept all the original parts. But what really caught my eye the first day I saw the 67, besides the low mileage, was the immaculate, original interior and car’s shocks. Yes, the shocks. I know it sounds odd to put such emphasis on the shocks, but I had just spent many hours research-ing shocks for my 66. I knew how difficult it was to find originals much less working ones. To this day, they are still on the car and working great. It was just another clue to support the claim of low mile-

  • 7

age I was seeing on the odometer, all which would later be confirmed with documentation and the car itself.

Now. Back to Steve LuVisi. His Corvette knowledge and expertise is hard to match. More importantly, I have come to value his friendship. There were many times that Steve helped me with both the 66 and 67, often going way beyond the call of duty. Too many to mention here. However, one deserves special mention.

The night before taking my 66 to Tahoe for a NCRS regional meet, I broke the antenna. The car was on the lift in my garage and it had an encounter with the garage door. I cried for about an hour before calling Steve at around 10:00 p.m. His amusement over the mishap didn’t make things easier. His support however, eased the pain. He had sent his 66 antenna out to be rebuilt and had just received it back that day. He of-fered it to me and the rest is history with a top-flight award for the 66. Thanks Steve for all your help on the 66 and 67, especially for your friendship.

The 67 began its award-winning campaign in 2016. Always scoring above 98 at NCRS meets and passing the Performance Verification (PV) test first time out. Much gratitude is owed to many. My neighbor and friend, Brad Ellison, was always available to help. His engineering training and skill with tools were indispen-sable especially when I managed to break something like a bolt. Thank you, buddy.

Duke Williams was another person who was always available to help. Duke and I spent numerous weeks testing and driving the 67 preparing for the PV test. We performed countless dry runs with the PV checklist as our guide. Researching the altitude of the PV test site and adjusting the car’s carburetors accordingly in preparation for the PV cold start. It is amazing how much altitude, humidity and temperature, to name a few, can affect a cold start. I read numerous articles in the Driveline that told of members’ experience with the PV test. We studied the test route and tried to simulate some of it. As an example, we had a good idea where on the route the emergency brakes would be tested and the approximate grade. We practiced the emergen-cy brake test accordingly. I spoke to some members who had Nick Culkowski administer the PV test on their cars and received good insight into Nick’s judging style. I even called Nick for advice on preparing for the PV test. Duke and I left no stones unturned. We even discussed Murphy’s law. Thank you Duke for your help, support and friendship.

Special mention goes out to Don Hooper. Always had great advice and insight. On one occasion, in prepa-ration for a meet, I wrote a law school style treatise on lacquer paint and why my 67 deserved full credit. Don’s advice, regarding my scholarly work, was to hold on to the treatise and not bother the judges. Sound advice Don.

Jim Gessner, a knowledgeable and well-known Corvette collector and enthusiast was another person I was privileged to meet through the club. More important-ly, he is just an all-around good guy with a wealth of information on Corvettes. Jim helped me discover some of the 67’s his-tory and original documentation.

I met Jim in 2018 at the Las Vegas NCRS National meet. Jim told me he knew one of the car’s previous owners, Jerome Shinkay. He contacted Jerome’s son. Jerome’s son searched his father’s files and found a copy of the car’s pur-chase order. Jackpot. He remembered the car having extremely low mileage and remembered his father selling the car to Reggie Jackson.

    Answers on page 17

Jim also helped me find the car’s second owner. The second owner remembered selling the car to Shinkay sometime around 1980. He remembered the car’s low mileage and expressed awe at the cars originality and remarkable interior.

Also, thank you to the many NCRS judges that judged my car and volunteers that made these meets enjoya-ble. Your commitment to our club and your knowledge and enthusiasm are commendable.

I would also like to mention Larry Wright and Diana, his lovely wife. Like Carlos Vivas, Larry is no longer with us. Larry was always gracious with his time and tools, lending both to me. At club gatherings he and his wife would go out of their way to make my wife and I feel welcome. You are missed Larry. Your help and friendship paved the way for the 67’s many awards.

Finally, my wife. When I told my wife about the 67 and that I had to have it, she told me, without hesita-tion, get it. More than anyone else, she is responsible for the many awards and accolades presented to the 67. She was always ready to help, holding a flash light, handing me a tool, reminding me not to curse in the garage because the neighbors could hear me or simply being there to pick me up when things didn’t go to plan. She went to every meet and was a joy to have around. When things looked dire before the 67’s PV test in Oregon, she was there to cheer me up and begin plans for the next PV test. Thank God that wasn’t necessary. Thank you, Adriana. Congratula-tions on the award.

To end, allow me to humbly share sound advice given to me by Nick Culkowski, the 67-team leader and the person that conducted the 67’s PV test. “Enjoy the process” he told me one day. These words calmed me down. I took them to mean, don’t stress over the car or the results. Enjoy the moments leading up to and after these events. Remember to enjoy those many people you will meet along the journey no matter the judging outcome. “The process” is more encompassing and meaningful than the results. Put your best effort forward, hope for the best and more importantly, as they say, take a moment to smell the roses.

Thanks Nick, you were the perfect person to deliver this message. It resonates with me to this day.

    By Barbara Vignone

W ith the onset of the COVID-19 virus, Corvette events have been canceled and/or rescheduled. Consequently, the Chapter Awards Program has been canceled for this year. This Awards Program, sponsored by the NCRS Board, promotes member in-

volvement and encourages the sharing of knowledge regarding Corvettes. It credits

chapters for completing a variety of activities related to local, regional and national Cor-

    vette programs.

Originally, only one chapter in each size category was

awarded the “Chapter of the Year” award. The South-

ern California Chapter received that award frequently

starting in 1996. Eventually, the criteria were changed,

and every chapter could earn the “Top Flight” award by

    completing required and optional activities.

The activities involve Chapter events, and Board and

Member participation. The Chapter is responsible for

holding Judged Meets, Technical Seminars, Judging

Schools, Road Tours and Social Events. The Board

maintains information channels such as a website and

Facebook page, provides for charitable contributions,

and provides legal documentation. Members are re-

sponsible for judging or tabulating, attending meetings,

driving your Corvette, sharing information, writing tech-

nical articles and having their cars judged or displayed.

Because of the outstanding participation of our members, the Southern California Chap-

ter has completed the activities required to earn the Chapter Top Flight Award EVERY

YEAR since its inception. THANK YOU!

Hopefully the Awards program will resume next year. While it is a stimulating program which encourages participation and education, it is still only a recognition of your involve-ment with Corvettes. More importantly, we miss seeing you and your fantastic cars and look forward to resuming our SCC/NCRS activities in the Fall. Our scheduled Fall Meet is set for Corvette Mike’s in October. See you there.

group meeting. Board members simulated a meeting with

audio/video communications It was suggested that all

Board Members be enrolled by next meeting and then pro-

pose a subsequent Board Meeting via Zoom. Jerry added

that the use of off-site communications would widen the

field for inclusion of membership on the Board. The Zoom

The item was tabled until our next meeting.

2022 Regional – Barbara reported on the information

received from Town & Country Resort. With room rates at

approximately $200 ( including fees) and a Food and Bev-

erage minimum of $43,900., it was decided it would not be

a financially wise choice for a Regional. Pat and Jerry will

contact Jennifer at the Tropicana in Loughlin for a quote.

Jerry will contact Mike and Dave to report on our situation

and determine if it is still timely to send in a request for a

    Regional.

Video Conferencing – Most Board members have been

on a video conference call with Jerry. He will schedule Da-

rold and Rob for next week. Jerry would like to have a trial

“meeting” afterwards and then schedule a video meeting

    date.

40th Anniversary – Ed created a 40th Anniversary Logo to

be used on a pin or commemorative coin. Jerry moved to

accept the Logo; Harry provided a second. The motion

was approved. Jerry obtained prices for a pin and a coin.

The Board decided to use the coin idea. Jerry moved we

purchase 200 coins using the Logo as modified. Harry se-

    conded and the motion passed.

Road Tour and Tech Session – We have 4 cars sched-

    uled to participate.

By-Laws – Ed, Jerry and Darold reviewed and updated

the SCC By-Laws. They will be sent to the Board for re-

view and comments and be voted on at the next meeting.

Misc. – Gary has moved SCC materials from the storage

unit to his warehouse which will result in a savings to the

    Chapter.

    NEW BUSINESS

Darold suggested several locations for possible events for

the year. He will try to set a tour of the Nethercutt Museum

    for June 6th.

    CLOSE MEETING

Ed moved and Gary seconded and the meeting was ad-

    joined at 7:56.

The meeting was reopened at 7:58. Ed suggested that

Rich Norbrothen be appointed as Chapter Photographer.

After confirming Rich was willing to accept the position,

Jerry provided a second and the motion passed.

The meeting was closed at 8:00.

    Respectfully submitted,

    Barbara Vignone, Secretary

    WHAT HAPPENED TO OUR SPRING?

By Beverly & John LeGate, Co-Judging Chairs

Not only did we have to cancel our Spring Meet in Long Beach, it looks like we are cancelling our

Spring. It has been raining and cold and so unusual for our beautiful Southern California Spring.

When we come out of this, AND WE WILL, we will all be looking forward to our FALL Meet at Cor-

vette Mikes in Anaheim. So please mark your calendars for October 9th & 10th we will see you for

    our FIVE POINT meet.

Registration will open July 15th online at the NCRS National website. All registrations received for

the Spring Meet in Long Beach will

be input manually for the Fall Meet.

    Our registered members do not

need to do a thing. You will receive

    your NCRS Webmaster confirma-

tion once I input your information.

We have six cars moving forward

with us. And about fifty fantastic

members signed up. Your hotel, in

Anaheim, will be a decision on your

own as there are so many hotels to

choose from and so many members live within driving distance. We will update you where we are

    staying as we get closer.

Our joint Tech Session with the Solid Axle Corvette Club was also cancelled in April. Joseph

LeMay was ready, willing and able and we look forward to rescheduling this event this year or next.

John was working on taking his ’66 on the road tour to this Tech Session.

I don’t think we have driven the ’66 anywhere

since the San Antonio National in 2017. I still

have nightmares of 117 degrees going thru

Tucson in a ’66 side pipe roadster with no air

    conditioning. Live and learn. .

Dave Brigham, our National Judging Chairman,

has some good information always worth read-

ing in the Spring Restorer. Members at the

Chapter level meets are no longer able to with-

draw counterfeit cars (VIN and TRIM Tag incon-

sistencies) called as such on the judging field.

They will be branded counterfeit and any dis-

pute will be taken up at a Regional Meet by

Dave Brigham, the National Judging Chair. John and I thank all of our registered members at the

Long Beach Meet for their patience, understanding and cooperation in moving this event forward.

Corvette Mike, I can think of no better replacement. Stay healthy everyone!

Road Tour and entering San Antonio, Texas

TREASURER’S REPORT- Verity reported on the

status of chapter funds. She asked about National match-

ing funds and Mike Ingham replied that a check for match-

ing funds was made out directly to the charity. The check is

sent to Don who does the reporting to National and has

previously been given to Allen at the next board meeting to

    deliver to the charity.

MEMBERSHIP: Jerry reported we have 139 mem-

bers. He has sent out a roster to the Board.

    OLD BUSINESS:

Pat Collins: Update on Pat’s death. Ed will include infor-

    mation in the Bonding Strip.

Bonding Strip: Ed is about 90% done with the Bonding

Strip and he will be sending it to the Board for review. Bar-

bara moved and Bev provided a second that the Bonding

Strip only be sent out via email. There are only two mem-

bers for whom we do not have an email address. Ed will

see if he can get email addresses. He can print out and

send a stapled copy if necessary. Motion passed.

2021 National Meet: The National group has scheduled a

planning meeting in Palm Springs. The only Regional for

this year is planned for October in Texas. With the current

virus uncertainty, that is still in question.

Holiday Brunch: Because of the uncertainty with restau-

rants and the restriction on gatherings, Ed moved, and Don

seconded that we take advantage of Verity’s generous of-

fer to hold the Holiday Brunch at her home. Further ar-

rangements could be made when we have additional infor-

    mation.

Fall Meet: The Fall Meet at Corvette Mike’s is still on the

calendar. Gary questioned holding the meet or perhaps

paring it down to 3 or 4 cars to limit exposure. Bev felt the

owners were excited and anxious to proceed. The topic

was tabled until the next meeting.

    NEW BUSINESS:

2022 Regional: Our application for a regional in 2022

could not be accepted as regionals canceled in 2020 had

to be moved to 2022. Mike Ingham explained that due to

contractual obligations which had penalty clauses, those

chapters negotiated with hotels to hold the meets at the

future date without penalty. Two dates are available in

2021, however the April date conflicts with a Regional in

Arizona. We could consider a September Regional or wait

until 2023. The topic was tabled.

Video Conferencing: Although there was some question

about security, Jerry determined that Zoom has increased

precautions. Jerry suggested that if Board members could

not attend meetings now with video conferencing, we

should enforce By-laws which address membership on the

Board. He will contact absent Board Members to be sure

they understand and have an opportunity to attend.

40th Anniversary: Commemorative Coins have been or-

    dered.

Events: Activities have been postponed until reopening

    of museum, etc.

Bylaws – Ed will again send out revisions. Please review

and be ready to discuss at the next meeting.

CLOSE MEETING: Ralph moved; Ed seconded that the

meeting be closed. Darold closed the meeting at 5:08. The

next BOD Video Conf. Meeting is May 11 at 4PM.

MANY THANKS TO MIKE AND SHARYL INGHAM FOR ATTENDING OUR VISUAL CONFERENCE AND PROVIDING INFORMATION AND UP-DATES ON NA-TIONAL AND REGIONAL EVENTS. WE REALLY APPRE-CIATE YOUR CONCERN FOR OUR REGION AND LO-CAL CHAPTERS!

    As reported from motor1

2021 Chevy Corvette To Cost More Than $60,000? At this point, we have no exact information about the pricing for the 2021 model year but it’s probably safe to say the entry-level price will go up by at least $1,500. Some of the highlights include two fresh paints – Red Mist Tintcoat and Silver Flare – which according to Corvette Blogger will come to replace Long Beach Red and Blade Silver, respectively. It’s a bit unusual to see such a change after just one model year, but it appears Chevy is looking to update the color palette al-ready. The former is said to be in the same vein as Crystal Red Metallic and Magnetic Red Metallic, while the latter might have already been revealed on the C8.R. A visible carbon fiber finish for the high-wing and the door intake trim will be available for the 2021 Corvette, along with a bunch of body stripes in a multitude of colors. Sadly, the visible carbon fiber ground effects op-tion will remain unavailable for the time being. On the flip side, the good news is customers will be able to get the Magnetic Selective Ride Control as a standalone option without having to go for the Z51 package.
