Want to do an Exchange Program? You should study some German… All courses are taught in German, and tests are given in German. Or you can take German courses during the summer.

Heiliggeistkirche (Holy Ghost church)

Built between 1344 and 1441 Tower completed in 1544 Until 1623, the galleries

contained Europe’s largest collection of handwritten books and documents (the “Bibliotheca Palatina”)

From 1706 to 1936 the church was divided by a wall through the middle: one side held Lutheran masses, the other held Catholic masses

Alte Brücke (Old Bridge)

The Bridge First bridge was constructed by Karl Theodor

around 1788 Rebuilt 9 times due to flooding

Brückenaffe (bridge monkey) “Why are you looking at me? Look in the mirror

and you will see more of the same.” Touch the mirror for wealth, the

outstretched fingers to return to Heidelberg, and the mice for many children.

Schloss (the castle)

First parts were constructed around 1300 Prince Elector Ruprecht III was the first to

use it as a legal residence (1398-1400) In 1764 it was destroyed by lightening Citizens had been using the stones to

build their own houses until Count Charles de Gaimberg began to try and conserve the ruins

Sits 300 feet above the city

Schloss continued…

Castle Gardens built in 1616-1619; destroyed during the second world war

Castle also houses the Heidelberg Tun (World’s Largest Wine Barrel): 7 meters high, eight and a half meters wide, holds 220,000 liters (58,124 gallons)

Three times over the summer it is lit up, and there are fireworks: represents the three times the castle went up in flames (two wars and lightening)
