National Platform
• Digital spend controls 2014 required all e-Learning
hosted on external sites be moved to one national
platform
• Previously known as project Blofield it has now
changed to HEE e-LfH Learning Platform Upgrade
• Many users in KSS have volunteered to participate in
this
• The deadline for completion is 31/03/2015. After this a
LETB migration manager will be appointed to work
directly with LETBs and e-LfH. They will then plan the
migration of local content over to this new national
platform in the early part of the next financial year

Presenter: Paul Wilder, TEL Officer - Frimley Park Hospital
“It’s 0930 on Day 2 into working here and the
Consultant already seems cross with me…
The SpR is in theatre and I need to book an
endoscopy for an upper GI bleed, a Contrast CT, refer
to the respiratory team and get a critical care review…
I can’t remember any of this from induction!”
2004 2012
2009 study identified 6% increase in mortality in August [1]
‘The intention is to end the so-called
killing season.
This is good news for patients – we
recognise the change-over period in
August puts patients at risk’
• Starting in a Hospital as a Junior Doctor is a bewildering
and stressful period in your career!
• Common tasks are often more difficult than they
should be and include:
– Requesting many different tests
– Making referrals to many different specialities
– Using hospital guidelines that are difficult to find
• More time (and stress) is often spent finding out how to
do such tasks rather than actually doing the tasks
themselves.
• Handover guides for all F1/F2 firms
• Bleeps of doctors & MDT
• Extension numbers for wards, secretaries
• Reference guides specific to the hospital
• How to make speciality referrals
– within the hospital
• How to request specific investigations
– within the hospital
• A resource for teaching
– And post graduate medical education
• Password protected
• Easily updatable
• Specific to Junior Doctors working at individual hospitals
• Available on
– hospital intranet,
– a home computer or
– a mobile phone
• Simple to set up for other NHS
trusts
• Scalable to other members of
the MDT
Trust Survey:
• 81.0% of F1s surveyed have used it
Of those users:
– 93.8% found it a useful way to access information
– 100% felt it saved them time
• Self reported time saved:
– Mean = 39 minutes per doctor per day
• Statistically significant in changing actions
– F1s are less likely to contact senior for help on basic tasks (p < 0.05)
Analytics:
• Approx 2000 page views per month at single Trust
• 65 Dr Toolbox sites
– 40 new sites over the last year
– Over 200 Doctors involved in programme
• Endorsement by NHS Medical Director

Reprocurement
• Preferred Bidder announced as IBM on 10/12/14
• Current contract with McKesson extended until
November 2015
• Reprocurement page on ESR website
• ESR-NHS0116 document on KBase sets out new
requirements for ESR
• Development window for essential requirements is
0-12 months from transfer of solution
ESR Reprocurement Requirements
Must deploy most up to date technology with regard
to any user interface and reflect current trends, eg:
Web Centre/Web2.0
Social Networking
Mobile Devices
Must allow elements of local flexibility in terms of
colour scheme, branding, etc.
ESR Reprocurement Requirements
Must include a dashboard front end for user access. The ‘portal’ should be the access point for all users of ESR and display key information relevant to the user’s profile.
The portal will be able to have elements of national and flexible local configuration to allow for, but not restricted to:
Deployment of KPI Policy messages – local and national Local intranet links System Broadcast messages Links to other systems Web conferencing
ESR Reprocurement Requirements
Other essential features include:
Solution ‘Workflow’ must be deliverable by e-mail
Access to self service and e-Learning from a secure internet
connection without the need for a separate Login/password
Full purging/archiving solution to meet the retention of records
requirements of the NHS. This should extend to all database
items and not just employee records (e.g. OLM Catalogue).
Must support self service access that allows flexibility around
managers who job share – eg multiple supervisors per
assignment
ESR – The Future of Self Service
• Payslips and P60s should replicate the paper payslip exactly
• Any comments entered into the Self Service application to
support requests for change (for example) must also be
transferred and recorded in the core solution for reference and
audit purposes
• Trusts will be heavily involved with Pilot and Test sites for the
new functionality being selected now. They will work closely
with NHS Central Team and IBM over the coming months

Loaning mobile devices for
e-Learning
Jenny Turner Library Services Manager and Conquest Education Centre Manager Tel-01424 755255 x8672/8148 [email protected]
Project by East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust Library Service
Technology Enhanced Learning Bid
Technology Enhanced Learning
ESHT library e-learning
project
• The library service received £20,000 for a project exploring the practicalities of loaning mobile devices in a secure IT environment to access e-learning and educational resources.
• Some devices would be configured for internet access through the NHS network (e.g. requiring a SUSSEX login)
• Others would be set up for open access WiFi, avoiding the N3 internet connections which would allow a greater range of software versions, Apps and use of social media.
• Devices could be borrowed for use in the libraries, workplace or home. Policies and processes would be developed to manage this securely.
Technology Enhanced Learning
Identified outcomes/goals
for the project
• Over-arching goal (identified in the
Memorandum of Cooperation associated with
the bid): “increase the levels of access to e-
learning and completion of mobile and e-
learning courses across East Sussex”
• Project aims more about exploring the
practicalities, identifying working solutions
before funding was invested in mobile
devices.
Technology Enhanced Learning
Progress to date
• Tried to identify a solution for every barrier
to e-learning – product on ESR or a video
on Facebook (no Sussex login, no space,
working nights, wrong software, wrong
version, site blocked)
• 6 Tablets and 2 WiFi printers on open
access WiFi, not organisation specific. 8
Notebooks for N3 Internet access,
SUSSEX network only
• Licenses
Technology Enhanced Learning
What has worked/Unexpected
issues 1
• For use with Open access WiFi we chose
Tablets - because they could be reset in 2
minutes. Ipads are not supported by our IT
department; equipment for automatic loaning,
recharging and resetting of mobile devices is
too expensive (very successful in academic
sector)
• We planned NOT to have Office software on
the Tablets (adds to library staff time resetting
devices) but this proved unpopular with users
Technology Enhanced Learning
What has worked/Unexpected
issues 2
• After detailed consultations, a clear
process and documented guidance for
staff is in place for loaning mobile devices
• 45 loans to date – 42 of these were used
within the libraries.
• 8 Notebooks purchased. The plan was to
set these up purely for ESR with the
correct desktop software.
Technology Enhanced Learning
What has worked/Unexpected
issues 3
• Introduction of “safeboot” as a requirement on all mobile devices = not suitable for multiple users; lengthy resets by IT after each loan so a re-think was required. Notebooks are still not in use.
• ESHT IT department are working on another solution. Direct access to ESR (password only at this stage) for multiple use, ease of access and ensuring correct software. The plan is to loan to ward areas in collaboration with L&D but this depends on available space and network points.
Technology Enhanced Learning
Steps identified
1. Evidence gather – what has/hasn’t worked for other libraries or other organisations? Keep doing this as the picture changes rapidly
2. Scope the problems in your own environment (ask IT, L&D, IG, HCAs)
3. Ensure your IT department are able to support the project, and involve Information Governance
4. With advice from IT, choose the mobile devices that will work in your environments – try first with a few, and factor in replacement costs and the inevitable damage
5. Plan for at least 18 months before things embed: considerable time is needed to agree practicalities and get clear processes and staff engagement
6. Identify the impact on the overall infrastructure (network capacity)
7. You will need a variety of solutions and devices. The most difficult to achieve will be mobile devices for multiple use on a secure network
