In 1999, China’s top leader cast 100million citizens as criminals. Fearing thatFalun Gong‘s widespread popularity wasovershadowing his own legacy, JiangZemin ordered the traditional Chinesepractice “eradicated.”According to a 1999Washington Post article, “Communist Partysourcessaid that thestandingcommitteeofthe Politburo did not unanimously endorsethecrackdownandthatJiangalonedecidedthat Falun Gong must be eliminated” inorder to solidify his power base.As ChinascholarAndrewNathannotes,“[Ultimately,Communismis]asystembuiltonmonopolyof power and [Falun Gong] is somethingessential, which can’t be compromised.”

In2000,AmnestyInternationaldocumentedJiang Zemin’s use of a “massive propa-gandacampaign”todemonizeFalunGong,utilizingtacticsbearinganeerieresemblance

to the horrific attacks against Jew-ish people in Nazi propaganda.

Jiang alsomobilized a global pro-paganda campaign while blockingwebsites,TV, radioandallmedia re-

latedtothefactsoftheperse-cution.Utilizingbusinesstiesand political pressure, Jianghaslargelykepttherealsitua-tionoutof thewesternmain-

streammedia,whileatthesame time saturating

the media withanti-FalunGongpropaganda.

China’sformertopleaderJiangZemindevelopedasystematiccampaignoferadicationtargetingFalunGong,permeatingallaspects

ofsocietyandutilizingallgovernmentdepartmentsandagencies.JiangestablishedaGestapo-likeagencycalledthe“6-10Office”,with

powertoimplementtheeradicationpolicynationwide.
