Herman Zapf has stated that all desktop ty-

pographers should study the book, The Elements of Typographic Style. It

is not just one more publication on typography, like so many others on the

market. It is, instead, a must for everybody in the graphic arts, and especial-

ly for our new friends entering the eld. Written by an expert, Robert Brin-

ghursts book is particularly welcome in an age where typographic design is

sometimes misconstrued as a form of private self-expression for designers.

As Bringhurst puts it: Good typography is like bread: ready to be admired,

appraised and dissected before it is consumed. Zapf commented, I wish tosee this book become the Typographers Bible.

But just reading a book on typography is not enough. Good designers devel-

op a habit of utilizing the principles and elements of design incorporating

typography into the layout. They develop an eye and style that is devel-

oped through observation, practice and an understanding of what works

    and what does not.

The type elements are indeed a critical piece and must be taken serious-

ly for any design that includes typography to be successful. Perhaps

reading this excellent book will help the novice designer move

to a new level of understanding in using typography. But

the test will come when the reader attempts to apply

what he learned and can do professional

    work on a consistent basis.
