Helping ethnic women become Heart Smart Sisters . Heart disease is the leading cause of death among women, killing more than breast cancer, lung cancer and stroke combined. Heart disease also hits ethnic women at a particularly high rate. We created the Heart Smart Sisters program to empower women in ethnic communities to make positive changes to help reduce their risk of developing heart disease. How Heart Smart Sisters works. We want to team up with you to run a series of weekly classes to educate women about the causes of heart disease, the benefits of healthy diet and the importance of regular exercise. Participants set personal weight- loss goals, take on healthy-living assignments, and track their progress at weekly check-ins. We run the meetings and supply healthy rewards as positive reinforcement for success. You provide the venue, we help draw the participants. We provide strong marketing support to announce the starting date and encourage women to participate. We also mail postcards to invite our members to sign up. ese materials are supplemented by large on-site banners to promote the program and brochures that include a postage-paid reply card to request more information. disease. If you’re a UnitedHealthcare Community Plan member with chronic health issues, you’ll have access to a care coordinator who’ll help you develop a plan to address those issues. You’ll be part of a community of fun events like line dancing, aerobics and walking, almost a support group for being heart smart. And you’ll get free health screenings to measure and track your Body Mass Index. Heart disease is the leading cause of death among women, killing more than breast cancer, lung cancer and stroke combined. Heart disease also hits ethnic women at a particularly high rate. We created the Heart Smart Sisters program to empower women in ethnic communities to make positive changes to help reduce their risk of developing heart disease.

How Heart Smart Sisters works.We want to team up with you to run a series of weekly classes to educate women about the causes of heart disease, the benefits of healthy diet and the importance of regular exercise. Participants set personal weight-loss goals, take on healthy-living assignments, and track their progress at weekly check-ins. businesses, community organizations, hospitals and doctors to develop events and programs that increase awareness and change behaviors. We develop classes for women in the community to learn about shopping and reading food labels, cooking, eating, exercise, smoking, and existing conditions like obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure that can affect their hearts. We empower women to make lifestyle changes that can save their lives.

30-Day Jump-Start Guide. Th is quick-start guide shows women how to get the most out of Heart Smart Sisters, and puts them on the path to better health in just 30 days. It starts with understanding important numbers like body mass index (BMI), blood pressure and cholesterol, so participants know what their numbers mean and where they need to be. Th en, it provides a step-by-step guide to help participants get there, by exercising regularly and watching what they eat. It also includes 12 key tips to follow each day to get a jump start on living a healthier life. All the information is presented in a way that’s easy to understand, and makes meaningful changes doable.

What you need to do

blood pressureBlood pressure is the amount of pressure your blood creates inside your arteries. It is written as two numbers—one on top, one on the bottom.

Systolic pressure: When they show you your blood pressure reading, this is the top number. It measures how hard your blood vessels are working when your heart beats.

Diastolic pressure: This is the bottom number. It measures how hard your blood vessels are working when your heart is resting between beats.

Blood pressure readings fall into three groups:

• Normal blood pressure: The top number is lower than 120. The bottom number is lower than 80.

• Close to high blood pressure: The top number is between 120 and 139. The bottom number is between 80 and 89.

• High blood pressure: The top number is 140 or higher. The bottom number is 90 or higher.

Know your numbers.

Here are things you can do to lower your high blood pressure. They also help you keep your blood pressure under control.

• Lose weight.

• Exercise regularly.

• Limit your drinking of alcohol.

• Stop eating salt, or limit the amount you eat.

• Eat foods that are high in potassium.

• Stop smoking.

• Worry less. Try to find time to relax.

Important Note. Diabetes is a disease that means your body cannot handle sugar. Kidney disease is when your kidneys do not work right. If you have either of them, you need to keep your top number lower than 130. The bottom number should be lower than 80.
