Leader in Me: Habit 7 – Sharpen the Saw This Month in the Classroom ELA: Writing an informational piece of literature that teaches and gives facts Writing an opinion piece in which they state an opinion, supply a reason for the opinion, and provide some sense of closure. Decoding words Identify who is telling the story at various points in a text. Use illustrations and details in a story to describe its characters, setting, or events. Compare and contrast the adventures and experiences of characters in stories. Reading poetry and understanding tone and feeling Describe the connection between two individuals, events, ideas, or pieces of information in a text Ask and answer questions to help determine or clarify the meaning of words and phrases in a text. Word meanings Math: Understand 10 can be thought of as a bundle of ten ones Understand that the numbers from 11 to 19 are composed of a ten and ones Compare two two-digit numbers based on meanings of the tens and ones digits, recording the results of comparisons with the symbols >, =, and <. Science: Explain how light is required to make objects visible Investigate light and sound Investigating shadows and how they come about Investigate sounds and their vibrations Design a light and/or sound that can be used to communicate over a distance Compare and contrast the basic needs of plants and animals Home Activities: Read at least 20 minutes each night. Read aloud nonfiction books that are of interest to your child and point out the nonfiction text features. Practice sight words every night. Practice writing sight words Have your child create their own math problems about things that interest them. Have students create a shadow puppet and then design a script that will best fit their puppet show. While students are doing the puppet show, have them observe the characters shadows. Have students decompose numbers using manipulatives such as beans or beads.
