Our Door is Open Anyone wanting to meet
with our Shepherds is encour-aged to contact any of the
elders to set up a time. The numerical results of the surveys are listed in the table below. Keep in mind that there were many written comments, in addition to the numbers that are be-ing evaluated in each of the areas.
Power of the Tongue
Recently I was in the Teen class studying James 3. James is one of my favorite books in the Bible and I think we all need to be constantly aware of this lesson.
Verse 6 -The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is it-self set on fire by hell.
Strong words for such a seemingly minor part of the body, but we do so much damage to others by our words. What can we do? James tells us that the tongue can't be tamed. We must rely on God to help us. We must be in His Word, in prayer, and away from all those things that are contrary to a Christian life. Easy to say, but difficult to do in this world. As with all other parts of our daily walk, we must be diligent in our speech. Remember that whatever we say can never be taken back, no matter how much we apologize for saying it. I pray that all of us remember to treat each other with love, including how we speak to one another.
In His service,
Barry McDowell

The New Mexico Children’s Home in Por-tales, NM has asked us to collect raisins. They will be here Wednesday, August 5th to pick them up. There is a box in the foy-er. Thank you to all of those that have brought rai-sins. It is deeply appreciated.
Philippine Christmas Boxes
We are so excited this year to participate in helping to pro-vide Christmas presents for the children who are steeped in poverty in the Philippines. Most of you are aware that Shirley
and I have been involved with the work that Sal Cariaga began on the Island of Cebu. Arapal Camp is located in one of the poorest areas on the island, and many of the people there have nothing. Shepherds Hill International, who over-sees the work there has asked us to be a part of this outreach. If you would like to participate, just pick up a small box (shoe box size or so) and purchase $15 to $20 worth of gifts and wrap the gift, mark it for age and sex of the recipient and bring it to the church building. Peggy has put together a bulletin board and we will gather the gift boxes there to send out the first week in September. Thanks in advance for all you do!!!!
Tuesday, August 18th, the PRIMETIMERS will be having a "Fish Fry" at the Leo Sweet Community Center at 6:00 p.m. The fish will be provid-ed. You will need to bring a vegetable, salad, dessert or rolls/
cornbread. There is a sign-up sheet in the foyer for you to list what you will be
bringing. Bill and Shirley Crabb and John and Kay Tigert are in charge of this very special evening of fellowship, food
and fun.
Brian’s Corner Brian McGonagill is a licensed Clinical Pastoral Counselor and confidential appoint-
ments are available. Call 575-499-3492.

there. Bring a dish to share, chairs or blankets,
friends, and anything else you might need. If
you have questions, please call Eva Cruz at
575-689-5046.
All ladies are invited to a ba-by shower this Sunday, Au-
gust 9th for David and Au-tum DeSoto. It will be from
2:00 pm to 4:00 pm in the Multi-Purpose Room. They are expecting twin boys and are registered at Delmon-
ico’s, Target.com, and BabiesRUs.com. David is the son of Gary and Dinah DeSo-
to and Autum is the daughter of Melvin

24th at camp. Blair Bowen (2104 Calle De Codorniz) was baptized on August 2nd in the Pe-cos River. Please make sure you welcome our new brothers and sisters in Christ.
Don’t forget our potluck on Sun-
day, August 30 when we will
honor our teachers and celebrate
our kids on Promotion Sun-

What a great family we have here at Sunset! Family camp is always a wonderful place to re-new our family bonds and to remember how God has blessed us with each other for encourage-ment and strength. Thank you, Bruce, for your
efforts to provide such an amazing opportunity.
Our church family has taken a huge role in devel-oping my faith over the years, and I truly believe it began in the cradle roll class. I am so thankful to so many of my Bible class teachers over the years for guiding and leading me to a relationship with God. Today,
I want to honor one of those special people.
Louise Dodson taught Bible class here at Sunset for many, many years. She was gifted in teaching and in working with kids. One lesson that I have never forgotten was from a fourth grade class that she taught. Many kids begin to be curious about communion at that age, and Louise took that opportunity to show us the meaning and im-portance of communion. She taught us what each part symbolized, and she taught us that we should focus our minds and our hearts on Jesus as we participated. After these lessons, she brought the communion trays in, and we actually shared the Lord’s supper. Of course, at that age, we were all amazed that we were allowed to even touch the crack-er and cup! I often think of her and that lesson as I participate in the Lord’s supper even now. What a wonderful servant of Christ Louise has always been. I thank you, Louise, for teaching so many kids about our
God.
I want to share a funny Bible class memory, too. My mom tells the story of my first Vacation Bible School experience. I was two years old, and when I came home after the first day mom asked me what I learned that day. I told her in a stern voice, “Jill, sit down!” Thank you, Vicki Wat-son for that important lesson! Sometimes our Bible class teachers may feel as if that is the only lesson they get to, but that lesson is so im-
portant, too.
I can’t share Bible class memories without mentioning one other person. Mike Veilleux has inspired many teens of my generation and more. He always began a new quarter with a challenge to double our class size. The prize was a pizza party if we could bring enough friends to accom-plish the goal. I’m sure there were quite a few pizza parties over the years, and I know many kids came to know Jesus because of that chal-lenge. He also gave us the option to stay in the teen room during the Wednesday night devotional if we would like to just listen to him read to us. I remember hearing the words of Max Lucado for the first time in one of those teen devos. Thank you, Mike, for sharing your gift of
teaching, and most of all for caring about growing kids for God.
There are so many more who influenced me – Jim Moss, Jim and Brenda Whitman, Larry and Jeannette Throneberry, Denice Peter-son, Darlene Shelton, Diane Johnson, and so many more. I thank each one of you who have served God in a teaching role over the years. I know now that the commitment to teach is not an easy one, but you
chose to sacrifice to teach so many.
I look forward to hearing memories and stories from each of you this month. Please fill out one of the Bible class memory cards that will be available in the pews and at the information desk in the foyer, or find me in the Family Center on a Wednesday night after services and between class and worship services on Sunday mornings during August to video
your memory.
