Herman Miller, Inc. pioneered the introduction of

modern furniture to the United States in 1931. The

Company’s three designers, George Nelson, Charles Eames,

and Alexander Girard, are among a handful of men who

have influenced the design of business and residential

interiors throughout the Western world. Some of

Herman Miller's innovations in furniture design since

1931 have been: the L-shaped desk, the storage headboard,

molded plywood chairs, two modular seating systems,

a seating group incorporating a unique method

of suspended upholstery.

Though Nelson, Eames and Girard share similar views

on design, there is little similarity in their work.

Nelson, the architect, writer and social commentator,

pursues conceptual approaches to certain problems

of living and working. His modular systems of storage and

seating are designed to bring new order to office

and residential interiors. Eames, the inventor,

explores new materials and production techniques in

creating pieces which have added knowledge to the field of

furniture design and construction. Alexander Girard’s

original use of materials, form and color in his textile

designs completes the Herman Miller Collection.

All three designers are involved in a wide variety

of design work. George Nelson and his staff in New York City

are active in architecture, industrial and interior design,

corporate identity programs, and exhibition design.

In 1962 the first of several United States Travel Agency

Offices designed by George Nelson opened in

Frankfurt, Germany. Nelson has written several books:

“Problems of Design,” “Living Spaces,” “Storage,”

and "Chairs.”

Charles Eames, his wife, Ray, and their group in

Los Angeles have produced numerous award-winning films.

Some of the films written, directed, and produced

by Charles and Ray Eames are: “The Information

Machine” and “Introduction to Feedback” for

International Business Machines, and “Toccata for Toy

Trains,” “Communications Primer,” “Parade,”

“Two Baroque Churches,” “Blacktop,” and “Day of the Dead.”

Charles Eames has created and produced film

sequences for two major network television spectaculars

... he also designs toys and exhibitions. In 1962

Mr. Eames produced a filmed introduction to the

U. S. Science Exhibit at the Century 21 World’s Fair in Seattle.

In addition to his textile designs for Herman Miller, Inc.,

Architect Alexander Girard is active in the design

of residential and commercial interiors, exhibitions,

and graphics. In 1954 he was commissioned by the

Museum of Modern Art in New York to travel to

India and collect textiles and ornamental arts for an

exhibition which he designed for the Museum.

His recent restaurant, shop, and showroom interiors have

been widely acclaimed. His work has been exhibited

in the United States, Barcelona, Florence and London.

Great national honor came to Nelson and Eames

when they were requested by the United States Government

to participate in the American National Exhibition in

Moscow in 1959. Nelson was appointed Director of Design

for the entire project; Eames designed and produced a

seven screen documentary film on life in

America for the exhibition.

The Herman Miller Collection provides solutions to

many living and working needs in homes, offices,

lobbies, restaurants, transportation terminals, schools,

dormitories, and hospitals. The Herman Miller Textile

Collection includes hundreds of upholstery and drapery

fabrics in an extensive selection of patterns and colors.

Herman Miller’s Technical Center, and its central

manufacturing plant are located in Zeeland, Michigan

with a second plant in Los Angeles. Herman Miller

furniture is also manufactured in Canada, England, France,

West Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Australia and Brazil.

Design awards won by Herman Miller, Inc. and its

designers include: Certificate of Excellence,

American Institute of Graphic Arts, Diploma di Gran

Premio, Undicesima Triennale di Milano.

CHAIRS

The fiberglas reinforced plastic arm and side chairs have many applications depending upon the type of base selected. The Chair shells are available in 11 standard colors and 16 contract colors and can be upholstered in a selection of materials. The upholstery is permanently attached to the shell and has a charcoal colored vinyl edge. Information on ordering is detailed on this page.

Hopsack and Nylomix upholstery fabrics are used in the same colors as -7 except the customer selects plastic shell color from the standard colors listed above.


An upholstery grade shell in a neutral color upholstered in a selection of other Herman Miller upholstery fabrics or an upholstery fabric supplied by the customer. A sample of fabric supplied by the customer must be submitted for approval prior to order acceptance. Write for swatches of color preference in Herman Miller Fabrics.

CHAIRS

The following chair bases are polished natural aluminum with black painted tubes or shafts and spiders. The DAT has a tilt-swivel mechanism, the PAC a pivot or swivel base without casters, and the PACC a pivot or swivel base with casters. The DAT seating height is 16" adjustable to 20". The PAC and PACC seating height is 1834".

SPACERS —EAMES PLASTIC CHAIRS

The seating angle of Eames Plastic Chairs may be changed by the addition of two V\ inch thick Black Poly¬ ethylene spacers installed between the rear shock mounts and the base, thereby decreasing the pitch of the back for special reading or table-desk uses. EAMES TANDEM SEATING SYSTEM

Eames Tandem Seating was designed primarily for use in public places. It is comfortable, handsome, ample and practical. It can be of help in organizing a space and giving it definition. Eames Tandem Seating is available in single rows of two to ten seats per row, and in double rows (back-to-back) of ten to twenty seats per unit. The back-to-back solution supports large groups of seats above the floor with mini¬ mum contact, automatically forming neat rows. The seat and back pads, identical and interchangeable, are a heat sealed sandwich of black Naugahyde, vinyl foam and Fibrethin and are held between polished aluminum castings. These are secured to a continuous steel T-beam strong enough to permit large clear spans, affording unusual ease of maintenance. In the event of vandalism, pads and arms can be replaced on location.

The 9000 EOG Series is a limited collection of desks in oil teak with ebonized hardwood frames. Three pedestal variations are available. Four drawer pedestal includes a locked compartment and an adjustable card index divider in the third drawer. File pedestal contains legal size Pendaflex folders. Dictaphone pedestal includes two drawers in addition to a compartment with electrical outlet for dictaphone. Each desk includes one adjustable divider in one of the top drawers. The 8000 series Executive Office Group desks and storage units combine to make a variety of "L” units, double and single pedestal desks. Some storage units are specifically for “L” desk arrangements (8001, 8010, 8003, 8030, 8004, 8040, 8008, 8080) and other units may be used free standing or in “L” desk ar¬ rangements (5803, 5803M, 5804, 5804M, 5800, 5800G, 5805, 5805M). A pull and L-l legs only; see page 69. A matching series of conference tables (8599, 8699, 8799, 8999) is also available; see page 25.

How to plan an EOG desk arrangement. 8000 Series EOG desks are identified by four digits. Each digit tells two things about the desk. 1. What parts make up the desk. 2. Where each part is located. There is one enlarged digit in each attachable component’s product identification number. This enlarged number is used in the formula to identify the location of the desired component in the four digit identification of the desk. Following a sequence formula of “8-top — left — right,” the first digit “8” identifies the 8000 Series EOG, the second digit tells what size top is to be used, the third digit tells what component is located on the left when seated at the desk, the fourth digit tells what component is located on the right when seated at the desk.

When a free standing storage shell is to be attached to the desk, its entire number follows the four digit desk identification number and the spacer block (5808, 5880) identification digit 8 is used as the third or fourth digit.

COMPREHENSIVE STORAGE SYSTEM

The Comprehensive Storage System designed by George Nelson introduces a new approach to storage problems. Furniture in the usual sense is replaced by a system of structural supports which can carry any desired arrangement of shelves, drawers, sliding panels and other components. Every installation can be planned to solve individual requirements and no two CSS walls need ever be alike. To simplify ordering CSS, several typical assemblies have been selected. They are illustrated below and on the next page. These packages can be pur¬ chased as shown or can be easily modified to fit individual requirements. All packages are based on the 9101 pole. End, back and center panels are used to divide or enclose storage spaces between shelves and components. End panels are held in place by two hook-on brackets. Back panels are secured by screws into back of components. Center panels are designed to fit between top and bottom shelves of a compartment. A small aluminum channel is fastened to the bottom shelf with screws; the panel fits into the channel. The top is secured to the bracket of the upper shelf with screw and nut. The center panels can also be used as end panels instead of 0139.

SPECIAL PRODUCTS

The Herman Miller Special Products Division markets certain furniture designs which have applications so broad as to take them out of the conventional categories of institutional furnishings. This Division is a service group. It offers guidance in product usage, as well as engineering and related technical assistance to the specifier and/or customer in developing highly individual applications. The Special Products Division presently works in two prod¬ uct groups: Eames Contract Storage (ECS) and Eames Multiple Seating (EMS).

EAMES CONTRACT STORAGE

ECS is a system of storage, study, and sleeping units designed to serve the specific needs of institutional housing. The product has broad application in college, university, and medical residences and is adaptable to other areas of public and private housing.

The system is composed of six basic units: short and long hanging units, dressing unit, study unit, and both a folding and stationary bed unit. ECS is hung from standard Unistrut sections secured to existing walls; it requires minimum space, has flexible arrangement, is free from the floor and ceiling, has effective sanitation through ventilation, allows for complete finishing of room prior to installation, is shipped knocked-down, and may be included in the general contract. The entire system qualifies for long-term government financing.

NOTE: Where special requirements are necessary, the unit can be designed and manufactured to meet the need while maintaining the continuity of the system. EAMES MULTIPLE SEATING

The comfort, ease of maintenance, and durability found in the plastic chair designed by Charles Eames are now available in seating for public spaces. A cast aluminum spider permits the side or arm shell to be mounted on straight or radiused bases for use in permanent applications. Dozens of chair shells can be supported on a common base, thereby reducing the number of necessary legs by over 80%. The lack of clutter beneath the seating units is visually pleasing and saves cleanup time. The comfort of these seating units comes from the contour support of the shell and the rubber shockmounts which cushion each shell on the aluminum adapter. Arm and side chair shells are available in 27 colors of plas¬ tic and a broad range of Herman Miller Naugahyde upholstered pads. Specifiers will find EMS quite versatile. Chair shells can be mounted in level, incline, or riser installations on a series of specially designed bases and are available with fixed or folding tablet arms. This product is recommended for use in transportation terminals, auditoriums, lecture halls, classrooms, churches, and other public buildings.

The application of fiberglas reinforced plastic side and arm shells on cast aluminum spiders for attachment to a variety of fixed bases. STANDARD FINISHES

(W) Walnut, (Bl) Birch, (R-W) Rosewood-on-Walnut, (WB) Walnut-on-Birch are close-to-the-wood Dulux finishes. In these fnishes, the pores of the wood are sealed but not filled. Some of the pores in the wood are visible permitting the full color and grain detail to be seen. The close-to-the-wood Dulux finishes offer a hard, durable surface with excellent abrasion and scratch resistance.

(OW) Walnut and (OT) Teak are gunstock oil finishes. Gunstock oil is our own development and is not to be confused with boiled linseed oil finishes. There is no sealing or filling of the wood pores and the natural color and beauty of the wood is preserved.

(EB) Ebonized, (GM) Gunmetal, (MR) Mustard, (TR) Tangerine, (TQ) Turquoise, (OL) Olive, (CR) Charcoal, (WH) White are lacquer finishes.

CUSTOMERS OWN MATERIAL

To insure prompt delivery when supplying own upholstery material please observe the following procedures:

1. Ship material prepaid to Herman Miller, Inc., Zeeland, Michigan or Herman Miller, Inc., 4131 Redwood Avenue, Los Angeles 66, California. Please see point of origin for each piece of furniture. On items of furniture that are shipped from either Los Angeles or Zeeland, the following states are shipped from Los Angeles: Hawaii, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, California, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and Texas.

2. Tag each piece of fabric with the number of the article on which it is to be applied and the amount of yardage to be applied on each article.

3. Include on this tag, dealer’s name, address and furniture purchase order number and yardage of each material being sent.

4. If fabric is reversible, mark face side.

5. Striped fabric: specify direction of stripe (vertical or horizontal). Striped fabrics can only be supplied horizontally on pieces up to 50" in width, unless stripe of fabric is woven lengthwise.

6. Matching is left to the factory’s discretion unless otherwise noted. 20% extra yardage must be included to allow for matching of fabric.

7. All yardages indicated in Illustrated Specification Book are based on 50" width. Please consult the Herman Miller Fabric Collection for a wide variety of textures and colors in upholstery fabrics, Naugahydes and leathers.
