Herrick Baptist Church NewsletterJanuary 2015From Our Pastor
Happy New Year!!! I just can’t believe where time goes! It’s 2015 and seems like just yesterday it
was 1978 or 1995. I would like to dedicate this newsletter to the late Lovane Henderson. What a
great lady who saw time go by for 99 years. I had mentioned how many things had changed in
Lovane’s life, like electricity, plumbing, TV and even the automobile. Can you imagine from 1915
to 2015? It could only be vast. Things that someone like me or anyone younger would have no
idea of the changes she was part of. Like having a horse pulling a plow to now using a tractor that
drives on its own. Or using a horse and buggy to get to church to driving a car that can tell you
how to get there. Or writing a letter to someone in another town like Pana and they had no zip
code. You would mail the letter and it took 2 or 3 days to get there. Now you can text someone in
Pana in seconds. I had said Lovane would cook breakfast for her husband Clarence after the
chores where done and use no microwave. So we can take a long look at today’s changes. I had
started writing this on my phone because our computer is not working right. Then I remembered
we have a lap top at the church I could use to write it. Wow, how many ways we can use or do
things with today’s technology. I can watch little kids using a phone and they can get it to work
better than some adults (like me). The things we now have (changes) are going so fast in the last
few years. I was telling someone about the cartoon The Jetsons we watched as a kid. They had a
TV that you talk on and watched as the other person talked back on the scene. And now you can
talk on face time and see the person you are talking with. Things change every day like my phone
is 4s smart phone, and now out dated and only a couple years old. But the word of God does not
change, Hebrews 13: 8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. 9 Do not be carried
about with various and strange doctrines. For it is good that the heart be established by grace,
not with foods which have not profited those who have been occupied with them. We cannot let
the world change so fast that we let it change the word of God! Like leaving out the word HELL in
a time of witnessing to someone lost! And go to and from our doctrine, the WORD of GOD! I
have been to the Youth Encounter and to a big church in Champaign to see how we have moved
from the old church where we used a hymnal and singing. Not ever using a sound system, only a
piano. Continued on back page…
Happiness is not determined by where you
live but how you live.

afterwards. Begin the day with the Word of God and

I recently read that 45% of Americans usually make New Year’s resolutions, but only 8% are successful in
achieving them. I have no idea how accurate that statistic is, but I do believe that success is relatively rare. Have you
ever wondered why?
If you read the list above of the top 10 resolutions in 2014, you’ll see that none of them say anything about God.
I believe that’s our answer – most people fail to keep their New Year’s resolutions because they do not contain God.
Knowing that gives us an opportunity to make 2015 different. So let’s make a new list and a new start.
For most people, many of the items on the list above are good goals. Several of them are centered on physical or
financial health and several of them concern happiness and productivity. I think God wants us to be focused on those
areas of life and I know that He can bring success. But I also know that before He will even begin to help, He requires
that we put Him first (Matthew 6:33).
Putting God first means more than just making Him the first item on your New Year’s resolution list. It means
giving Him the first part of your day and the first part of your pay check. It means thanking Him first when things are
good in your life and going to Him first when things are challenging. No matter where we are in our relationship with
Him, I believe there is always more “firsts” to offer Him.
So throw away your old resolution list and make a new one with God first in everything. If we draw near to Him,
He will draw near to us (James 4:8).

Our values decide our character, our character decides our value.Continued from front page…God also spoke to me at the Youth Encounter about reading my bible from front to back. Which at 53
I haven’t done that before, and I sure would hope I can do it in a year! (if anyone wants to join please
do so) But then it goes back to technology, how we can use it to study God’s word. It says in 2
Timothy 215 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be
ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. How can we not keep up with changes but still not keep
up with God’s word? I have been praying a lot about our church and 2015 and we can’t stand still.
We have to keep praying and learning more about God’s word. We must have a heart for lost souls
and lead them to the Lord! But some of us get nervous just talking about it. Or thinking, wow you
want me to lead you to the Lord? With today’s technology we should study more and more and feel
the boldness to lead someone to a Savior named Jesus. We have to put the things God has given
and use them for his glory. I once had a senior retired pastor say that changes will happen and you
can move with them or you can stand still and it will happen anyway. We have seen so much new
change in our church over the few years that I have been here from the music is on a screen to
almost ready to have our own church web site. Lovane never complained about change in our
church, she just wanted to be there to serve God! We lost Raymond, Lynn and Lovane these past
few weeks and we will all miss them as they are with the Lord! -Pastor Jay
