Welcome to the new season A warm welcome to all readers, new and long-standing. It has been an exciting summer, and looks set to be an exciting new season too.
In this newsletter we hope you will find something of interest, whether you play for fun, fitness, or the pleasure of winning/pain of losing. You’ll find personal experiences of the Olympics, reports of recent tournaments, and a round-up of what’s currently happening badminton-wise around the county.
Thanks again to our contributors, many of whom provide copy on a regular basis. If you know anything of potential interest to our readers – particularly news about your club – please send it to me for the next edition (copy deadline 15 January 2013). Gill Bartlett

Around the County
By all accounts Badminton is alive and well throughout the County!
No Strings sessions are proliferating and doing well, with some facilities, including Wodson Park, Royston LC, Gosling Sports Park, and Herts Sports Village, running three or four successful sessions a week, and new sessions being launched throughout the County.
Student participation is increasing, and set to continue to do so, with the appointment of Fiona Griffin (a Level 2 coach) as new University Development Officer at University of Hertfordshire, and North Herts College launching weekly badminton sessions at both Stevenage and Hitchin sites as well as running a Level 1 course for students.
CBNs (Community Badminton Networks) are reportedly gaining strength, with good attendance at latest meetings reported by North Herts and Welwyn Hatfield. West Herts, which now incorporates Watford and Three Rivers as well as St Albans and Dacorum, has still to find its community feet, as does East Herts.
In North Herts, the future of Shephall Leisure Centre is currently unknown. Stevenage Leisure is to pull out of the loss-making site, with no management plan yet in place, we believe. Ben Vranjkovic and Robin Wade are leading the CBN identification of projects to spend junior development money in the Stevenage account. Bob Green is leading a project, based at Hitchin Girls’ School to get more girls playing badminton.
Welwyn Hatfield has approved a revised constitution and bank account arrangements to reflect its current club membership and attendance. Local clubs have indicated a lack of ladies; a ladies-only coaching course is being investigated. The excellent Birchwood badminton hall refurbishment, completed in the summer, is resulting in a boom of badminton bookings, including 2

matches.
Premier Club re-accreditation has recently been completed by HSBA, SCOBE JBC, and Gadebridge JBC.
Abbey BC adult development squad has gained funding from Active St Albans Get Back Into programme. Marshals JBC, St Albans, has been accepted as 1 of 30 clubs to take part in the Club England Evolution pilot scheme to increase club development. After a review of the pilot results, it is hoped the scheme will roll out fully later in 2013.

As part of the Herts Sports Partnership Sport Inclusion bid, financial support for the Herts Wheelchair Tournament is assured for the next three years, thanks in part for the success of the first event in January this year. The Second Herts Wheelchair takes place on 27 October, together with demonstration and come-and-try session on the day, led by Philip Gray.
Badminton was promoted during the summer at a number of events, including the Kaleidoscope Festival in Welwyn Garden City, Gosling Sports Park Open Day, taster session at the Galleria, and the St Albans Paralympic Festival, where Gobi carried the flame into the park. Successful Community Games events were also organised by Welwyn Hatfield CBN, Hawks BC and Comets JBC. Reports are that these events have all resulted in increased participation at sessions and clubs: thanks to Lee Bent for providing sufficient attractive and informative leaflets at all events.
VISION
In the October 2011 newsletter we wrote:
“Thanks to those club secretaries and organisers who responded to our appeal for information about your concerns and problems with the current membership registration system. As a result a letter of complaint was sent by Malcolm Fraser to Adrian Christy about Vision, and Adrian Christy and Lauren Blake kindly agreed to travel to Hertfordshire to meet Malcolm and other HBA representatives on Tuesday 11 October. Dave and Gill Bartlett were able to attend the meeting at Birchwood Leisure Centre, where internet access and a large screen were available.
Adrian and Lauren listened carefully and discussed our problems. Although it appears full membership details of all juniors are required, and this cannot be changed, Adrian acknowledged that CRB should be required for anyone given access to the details of juniors, and an implementation process would be considered. Our frustrations concerning the useability of the system will be taken on board, although there is no money for (further) remedial work at the moment.”
Over the summer, I’m sure, we all looked forward eagerly to being re-united with a more user-friendly Vision. My own hopes should have been re-assessed when I received the following email starting:
“Good Morning Josh,” and continuing “We hope we have made the system a little more user friendly by changing the wording on some screens to explain what to do in a little more detail.”
Well, I wasn’t aware of changed wording on any relevant screens, but I was certainly aware of the same old blood-pressure-raising frustration of trying
to delete and add members when the default screen of 10 members in BE number order reappears after completing every individual action.
As I found out last year, it is no longer possible to delete JJC members after paying the junior club fee, but personally I don’t have time this year to go through the laborious and time-wasting process of deleting names (most of whom have gone off to Uni) as well as entering our new members. I therefore emailed Lauren and Tina, and sent Membership at Head Office a list of our JJC members to be deleted, after which our club fee will be paid. I am pleased to report that Laura Cross from Membership emailed me this morning that the names have been deleted as requested.
Is it mainly Junior Club organisers who find Vision so frustrating? Or are Senior Club Secretaries just more stoic/less pressed for time?

TOURNAMENT REPORTS
Area League Challenge 2012
Sunday 23 September 2012 saw three teams compete in the Area League Challenge at the newly refurbished Birchwood Leisure Centre in Hatfield.
Last year’s event required a play off to decide the eventual winners were the county u17 side. This year’s nail biting affair produced another close winner in the form of the Hertford Area League. North Herts were equal on match and team wins, but were pipped 17 16 on games won.
Commiserations to North Herts for the second year lost by the closest of margins.
Congratulations to the winning team from Hertford Area. James Lwin, Philip Knudsen, Greg Clark, Mel Clark, Karol Perley and Jade Tang.
North Herts were represented by Ben Vrankovic, Richard Adams, David Leamy, Jennie Briggs, Nicky Dewhurst and Sangeeta Dhall.
The County under 17 team were represented by Hugo Weaver, David Maughan, Jake Goode, Libby Jennings, Laura Monk and Ying Cen Tee.
Thanks to our County President Bob Welch who assisted at the event.

Herts Open 2012
The 2012 Herts Open took place at HSV on the weekend of 1 and 2 September and yet again it was a well supported tournament. Over 200 players took part, coming from all over the country. Hertfordshire was well represented with both juniors and seniors looking to get tournament practice early in the season.
The mens and ladies singles was played on the Saturday, initially using all twelve courts. The number of entries for the mens singles was restricted to 72 (there were over 80 entries) with 16 players taking part in a qualifying event to get into the main draw.
In the mens singles Dinuka Karunaratne (Middlesex) and the unseeded Chris Evans (Surrey) both got to the final. The final was a long three setter with Dinuka coming out on top 17-21, 21-12, 21-9.
In the ladies singles sixteen year old Tsui-Yee Lau (Bucks) won, beating Nicki Chan-Lam (Yorks) in the final a consistent 21-18, 21-18.
Sunday started again on all twelve courts with the level doubles, and as the day progressed the mixed doubles were started. All in all 91 games were played during the day with the last final coming off court at 8.30.
In the mens doubles final Dean George (Sussex) & Chris Tonks (Warks), both ex-England internationals played Connor Bambrick (Herts) & Ollie Baczala (Bucks). The youngsters put up a brave fight but the ex-internationals showed too much class for them, winning 21-13, 21-10.
The ladies doubles final was between veterans Olga Bryant (Cambs) & Tracey Dineen (Essex) and teenagers Viki Williams (Hants) & Lydia Powell (Sussex). In this final it was the young pair that prevailed, winning 21-16, 18-21, 21-11.
The mixed final was the last game to be played, between Chris Tonks & Claire Milward (Warks) and Joel Gayle & Caroline Westley (Essex). Joel got his revenge over Chris for the semi final defeat in the mens doubles as Joel and Caroline ran out winners 21-13, 21-12.
Overall it was another successful Herts Open tournament, mostly played in fantastic spirit with lots of excellent badminton. A tournament of this size would not have been possible, nor would it have run so smoothly without the help of a number of people, and so I would like to thank Jo Williams, Bob Welsh, Graham Hall, John Herdman and the staff at HSV for their time and effort over the weekend.

Herts Restricted 2012
Andy Walden bagged a hat trick of titles at the County Championship held over the 29 & 30 September 2012 at the new refurbished Birchwood Leisure Centre in Hatfield.
In the singles the Herts County appearance record-holder
defeated Paul Monk in three games: 17-21, 21-12, 21-12. Monk the eldest son of Stanstead Abbott’s stalwarts Belinda & Jeff Monk was playing his first County Championship for many years, having returned from University this time last year.
In the level doubles, Walden partnered fellow Ware BC
club mate Chris Holt to victory with a straight games win over Rob Pace & James Hor. Nine pairs completed in this event and it was good to see a good cross section of players competing.
Walden’s third title came in the mixed with Charity Barnes
winning five straight matches without dropping a game. The final saw them take on Walden’s level doubles partner Chris Holt and new mum Kath Warden.
In the women’s singles, Charity Barnes picked up her
second title of the weekend with victory against under-17 county player Philippa English, who earlier in the day had come through a classic three game match against former title holder Caroline Hale, winning 21-19 in the final game decider.
However, Charity could not match Andy’s three titles. When partnering Kath Warden in the women’s doubles,
the pair went down in two very close games against Katie Comras and Frankie Edelmann.

Olympic Memories The heady days of the Summer Olympics and Paralympics seem a long way away with the damp and chilly arrival of Autumn. We may choose to forget some memories of the badminton, but here are a few that will definitely be remembered for ever.
A Games Maker’s view
I applied to work as a volunteer at the Olympics over a year ago. The selection process was quite rigorous but very well organised, as was the training that took place over the first seven months of this year. Firstly, orientation training in snowy February, followed by role specific training, and finally venue training. We were issued with a smart purple and scarlet uniform that is ours to keep.
I was assigned to the International Badminton Federation Services (IF) Team at Wembley Arena. We were a small team of 10, and our role was to greet the International Federation officials from across the world, and ensure that their needs were met during the event. Four of our team were official drivers and the remainder manned the International Federation lounge in shifts of 2. My first three shifts were before the Games started.
In order to get to Wembley by 6am I caught the 4.23am train from Hertford, never having previously been aware that such a train existed! Even though the early hour was a shock to the system it was still fun and surprisingly convivial on the train with other travellers interested to know what I was going to be doing (Obviously intrigued by the uniform! Ed). That interest and support continued throughout and was one of the best memories I have.
Our initial duties consisted of setting up the lounge and carrying out duties requested by the staff of the IF based in Kuala Lumpur. Wembley Arena is vast and has a complex series of basement corridors and offices and it took time to find my way around. Three vast practice halls were erected across the road from the arena with a tunnel linking them to the Arena. Once all the officials had arrived we were there to ensure that only suitably accredited officials could come into the lounge, and to provide information and assistance to those who requested it.
There were humorous moments, such as the overflowing chocolate fountain, whose branded base had been covered to prevent advertising, and had consequently overheated during an important reception! I made some good new friends and had the thrill of being involved in the Olympic Games in London. What an experience! Hilary Anderson
The Job of a Lifetime
My Olympic journey started in September 2010 when I was lucky enough to land the job of a lifetime, working as a Lead Project Manager for LOCOG, the Olympic Organising Committee. My role was to deliver the overlay (that’s all the temporary things which go into venues to turn them from their ‘normal’ selves into Olympic venues!) at five Olympic venues, including, unbelievably, Wembley Arena. While I threw myself headlong into Wimbledon, Lords, Earls Court and Wembley

Stadium, I always knew that come Games time, I would be at Wembley Arena, so kept it close to my heart!
The level of overlay at each venue varied tremendously, from only a small amount of security, broadcasting and technology installations at Wembley Stadium to Wembley Arena which has one of the largest builds of the off park venues. We built 9 badminton courts in 3 temporary sports halls, athlete changing and support facilities and an operations and broadcast compound on a piece of derelict land opposite the Arena. In the Arena itself, we built a fully functioning media centre, officials’ lounges and offices, medical and doping facilities and a technology hub in the Arena’s service yard. We also built the biggest cable bridge of the Games across the public highway to connect the two facilities. Most of my work was delivering things that the public never see, but I take great pride in that I also had responsibility for the competition field of play at Wembley Arena, where I led the installation of the floor, carpets, lighting, officials’ technical table and sports presentation equipment.
The job was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. The pressure to deliver perfect venues to an immovable deadline was ever present, and there were many, many days when I thought we wouldn’t make it. However, it was also the most exciting, challenging and rewarding thing I have ever done and nothing else will ever come close. The constant thought that the delivery of the Olympic badminton venue was down to me was both terrifying and exhilarating in equal quantities!
There were so many highs, way too many to document, but I’ll try to pick a few. I got to watch all the Badminton finals (and quite a few of the earlier rounds) from the best seats in the house (it was definitely worth being friends with the broadcasters, who happily made room for me!). I got to mix with and talk to the players, and even had my photo taken with Lin Dan! (See picture above) I got to watch events at loads of the Olympic venues, including all the venues on the Park, all my venues and a couple of other off park venues. In addition to
all the badminton, I saw Team GB win Silver in the Modern Pentathlon, Usain Bolt win the 200m final, the men’s football final and a whole host of other exciting events.
There were also a lot of lows. My team’s day during competition started five hours before competition started, that’s 4am! It finished 3 hours after competition finished, that’s 2am. We worked 6 days a week, 12 hours a day for nearly 2 months in the final run up to, during and the first couple of weeks after the Games. There were days when everything went wrong: the training halls leaked; the air conditioning was too hot, too cold, too blowy; the toilets were constantly blocked; the broadcasters complained about everything. I found myself being chief carpet layer, cable runner, fence mover, safety taper and asked to use any number of other new skills!
Was it all worth it? Absolutely. I worked with the best people I’ve ever worked with, made friends I will keep for life and had an experience I will never forget. Liz Austin

Pre-season Training Camp Visit
Steve Willis, Liz Batement and 15 young players took part in a pre-season training camp organised at Middlefart Club in Denmark 16 – 21 June.

A great time was had by all, thanks to Danish coach, Carsten Jensen, and friends: The players
all want to do it all again, hence dates have been announced for 2013 Danish Camp 29 July to 2 August for under 15 and under 17.

New Junior Club Tournament
All Herts Junior clubs are invited to enter club players in a junior club tournament on 11 November at Birchwood Leisure Centre, Hatfield. The tournament aims to
provide enjoyable and competitive experience for beginner and less experienced players, so it is not open to County Squad players. Each club may enter as many or as few players as they wish/are able to, but entry will be on a “first come, first serve” basis in each age group. Age Groups will be as follows:
School year 5 and under;
School year 7 and under;
School year 9 and under;
Over school year 9. All games will be timed, and played in Boxes, to play as many as possible in the same age group. Points for each game will be allocated as follows: 3 for win; 2 for draw; 1 for play. All points contribute to club total. Final club result will be an average of points won (ie the club total points divided by the number of players). Singles and/or Doubles to be decided, dependent on player numbers and time available. Fee will be £3 per player, payable on receipt of entry form, which is available on HBA and HSBA websites. Deadline for receipt of entry form and fee: 25 October.

Herts Youth Games 2012
There are certain times when we should really appreciate badminton being an indoor sport, and so it was at this year’s Youth Games, when many participants outside had to deal with the truly inclement weather for much of the day (you must remember that fantastic July we had). We were nice and cosy in the badminton hall, and even though we had to endure the big horns of the Basketball competition next door, at least we were dry!!!!
The full complement of ten districts took part in the Badminton competition, and we witnessed some fantastic play throughout the day. Huge thanks should go to the ten district managers, who guided their teams throughout the day, and put in the hard work coaching prior to the tournament.
The ten managers/coaches were: Tara Haddock – Broxbourne, Jo Bevil-Gahan – Dacorum Paul Foster – East Herts Alan Overy – Hertsmere Robert Tucker – North Herts Keith Burns – St Albans Ben Vrankovic – Stevenage Frances Morrison – Three Rivers Phil Adams – Watford John Stobo – Welwyn Hatfield
At around 3.30 the competition stopped, the curtains in the badminton hall were drawn back, and the children were able to witness the Olympic Torch Relay changeover in the Athletics Hall. Amid much cheering and flag waving, the very noisy crowd gave it a great reception….then it was back to work again.
The competition is played in a round robin format where EVERY point counts rather than the number of matches won, so right to the very last minute the positions could change. This year, although the first two positions were fairly safe towards the end

of the competition, the battle for third place (and a bronze medal) was on cliff edge right until the end.
Retaining the Badminton trophy for the second year running were North Herts – congratulations to all the team. The final positions were

Thank you to all my helpers on the day: the unflappable Gill Bartlett, who manned the desk and took the scores so ably; Technical support and PR Dave Bartlett; Bob Green for supplying the computer program; and David Maughan who gave up his Saturday to come and score.

COACHING
So you want to be a coach?
The following courses are available for people to qualify as coaches:
1. Badminton Leaders - a 4-hour course aimed at 16 - 19 year-olds, mainly for leading Change4Life and other school sessions .
2. Badminton UKCC Level 1 course - held over 3 separate days, including an Assessment
3. Badminton UKCC Level 2 course – held over 4 separate days, and requiring a 4-session player study.
4. BE Disability 4-Nations course for Level 2 qualified coaches. See details on BE website.
5. Badminton UKCC Level 3 course: a course over some 6 months or more and is aimed particularly at managing other coaches. This Level is required for a Performance Centre Head Coach.
These courses are organised through BADMINTON England and Badminton Development Officers (RDO). While those in Herts will be advertised on our own HBA website, the complete list of courses

Next Level 1 & 2 coaching courses in Herts will run as part of Coaching Week 2013.
