Thanks to our Decathletes, Alternates, Coaches - Mrs. Ruta, Ms. Isabel, Mrs. Thomas, Parents, Priests,

Teachers, and Friends for their amazing support!

Concert Chorus at St. Andrew’s in Pasadena last Saturday, March 2nd

, 2013 by Mr. Tom Makiling

The festival was well attended by six children’s choirs from different parts of Southern

California and San Francisco. It was a nice experience to be one of the participants in the Pueri

Cantores Festival. Our kids were well behaved, inside and outside the church. They had a great

time learning and rehearsing, interacting and meeting new friends from the other choirs and

assisting at the 5pm culmination Mass of the festival. They rendered their song, “Upon This

Rock” majestically during the prelude. I'm hoping that by learning some new songs, techniques

of singing and performing from the distinguished guest conductor, Mr. Paul French, they will be

able to utilize/apply these newly acquired ideas and share them with the new and future members

of Concert Chorus.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank once again our parents who took time in bringing

their singers to St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, most especially those who stayed with us until the

festival is over. Thank you also to you for your continued support of our Concert Chorus!

Creative Writing Contest Winners 2013

Ms. Katy Huntley, Vice Principal and Language Arts Coordinator announced the winners on

Friday, March 1, 2013, the kickoff for the NEA/National Institute for Literacy’s “Reading

Across America.”

The short fiction writing is expected to be original, and the students will choose to write about

any topic or theme. While storytelling and story structure are emphasized, writing conventions

(spelling, grammar, and punctuation) were definitely taken into account.

Students were given some writing guidelines to brainstorm and free write. Their writers’ and

illustrators’ entries were evaluated following these guidelines:

Originality: Did you use your imagination to create something unique.

Interpretation: How well does the illustration interpret its corresponding story?

Composition: How is the arrangement in the story? Is the placement exciting?

Contrast: Is there a contrast of darks and lights? Are varieties and hues of colors used?

Depth: Foreground? Background? Multi-dimensional?

Line and Shape Quality: Is there a variation of line (thick or thin)? Are shapes

compelling?

Visual Effect: Does it have that WOW look? Does it stand out as being different from

the norm?

Dear brothers and sisters, in this season of Lent, as we prepare to celebrate the event of the Cross and

Resurrection – in which the love of God redeemed the world and shone its light upon history – I express

my wish that all of you may spend this precious time rekindling your faith in Jesus Christ, so as to enter

with him into the dynamic of love for the Father and for every brother and sister that we encounter in our

lives. For this intention, I raise my prayer to God, and I invoke the Lord’s blessing upon each individual

and upon every community! Pope Benedict XVI - From the Vatican, 15 October 2012
