DESCRIPTION

In partnership with homeowner families, Habitat for Humanity Cambodia builds, rehabilitates and repairs simple, decent homes with the help of volunteer labor and donations of money, materials and other gifts-in-kind. Habitat houses are sold to home partner families at no profit. Home partners repay through affordable, no-profit and mortgage loans. Their monthly loan repayments go into a local revolving fund to be used to build still more Habitat homes. In short, Habitat for Humanity is not a giveaway program.

HIV/AIDS Care and Prevention Training in Kandal Province

A training on HIV/AIDS care and preven-tion was conducted from February 19 to 22 in S’ang, Kho Thom, and Punhealeu Dis-tricts, Kandal Province, in which 38 families participated.

The purposes of this training were to edu-cate people about HIV/AIDS, how HIV can be transmitted, how to prevent the trans-mission from mother to child, and ways of taking care of health when living with HIV/

AIDS and various prevention approaches. The Project Officer for Building Homes Building Positive Lives project said, “I be-lieve they gained more knowledge from this training because together with the ori-entation, we also facilitated them to have group discussions and presentations of their thoughts and experiences. As a result, aside from learning from each other’s experiences, they also became more confident in present-ing and their sharing became dynamic.

Pann Sokhom, a participant beneficiary from Ponhea Leu district shared, “This train-ing gave me the chance to talk and share ex-periences with other trainees and this led me to understand our situation more. I think this is a good training as we can absorb and recognize more about the problems we are facing every day and figure out and accept ways of dealing with them.”

Volunteer Program Plans for Strategic Growth

A Volunteer Program Workshop was con-ducted among HFH Cambodia staff in Phnom Penh on February 6 to 8 with the over-all goal of aligning program strategies with the new Habitat Cambodia Strategic Plans for 2014 – 2018.

The workshop refreshed the general staff ’s understanding about Volunteer Program and the different service areas of the program including Global Village program, Youth program, and Church program, among oth-ers. It provided an excellent avenue for the group of 26 participants representing vari-ous programs and support units to discuss key issues in hosting volunteers, strategically identify tools in hosting teams and organiza-tion volunteer fund raising events and har-nessing HFH Cambodia’s hosting capacity, and creating new product mix for hosting volunteers. Through the workshop, support-ed by HFH Asia Pacific Volunteer Program Manager Ariane Aliggayu, HFH Cambodia team shared valuable hosting experiences, lessons-learned and challenges, and most importantly, strategically planned for growth and expansion.

“I gained a deeper understanding of our role in hosting volunteers. The sharing chal-lenges and discussions allowed us to collec-tively prepare solutions and new strategies. It was quite a valuable opportunity that all the programs were able to join together. I am eager to work with Volunteer Program and other partners in making Habitat Cam-bodia’s hosting a continuous success” shared Mr. Chhun Sona, Program Manager of HIV-OVC Shelter-based Program.

Water Filters, Water Jars Distributed in Siem Reap101 water filters and 102 water jars were dis-tributed to 203 families living in three com-munes - Pouk, Sasor Sdom and Reul in Siem Reap Province in January.

The distribution, which was part of the im-plementation of the HFH Cambodia Water, Sanitation and Livelihood Project funded by Guernsey Overseas Aid Commission through Habitat for Humanity Great Britain was conducted in order to promote use of clean water and lead to sustained behavior change of community people through the use of safe water.

During the occasion, HFH Cambodia team provided an orientation to community peo-ple about the proper methods to keep, clean and use the facilities.

“I’m so happy receiving the water filter and I now clearly understand how to use it. I never know that this small item would give such benefits to my family. It saves us time that we do not need to boil water and it helps keep us away from getting sick. When I go back, I will introduce its to other families about its usefulness and encourage them to use it also,” said Sao Bot, Siem Reap.

The closure of Steung Meanchey dumpsite in 2009 left hundreds of families without homes and their source of income – as garbage pickers – in Phnom Penh, Cam-bodia’s capital. Many now live in shacks hugging the dumpsite’s fence, and others are dispersed across the city; all live in substandard housing struggling to make a living. Mekong Big Build volunteers will work at Smile Village, or Phum Kdey Nhor Nhem, helping to build affordable rental homes for these families.

Smile Village is a 2.2-hectare site just 11 kilometers and within cycling distance from the city center, providing easy access to jobs, schools and opportunities to de-velop new skills.

Take action to end poverty housing in Asia-Pacific now. Supporting Habitat Youth BUILD will help families live in decent homes.

The United Nations estimates that more than 500 million people in the Asia-Pacific region live in slums, representing more than half of the world’s slum dwellers.

Habitat Youth BUILD is your opportunity to show solidarity with Habitat’s cause, say NO to inad-equate housing, and have a tangible impact on the world.

If you’re 16 to 29 years old and have a passion to leave the world a better place, then we have the perfect opportunity for you. This April 27, hundreds of Cambodian youth will roll up their sleeves in a mass effort to re-build the nation. If you believe that housing in the country could use a massive facelift — join us to build homes for families in need.

The youth of Cambodia will join over 10,000 Habitat for Humanity youth volunteers from 10 coun-tries across Asia-Pacific. This simultaneous multi-country build event will mark Habitat for Hu-manity’s Youth BUILD campaign that aims to raise funds for, and awareness of, the dire housing situation in the Asia-Pacific region.
