Since its inception, the University of Kansas track and field program has been represented by a litany of hall of fame coaches and innovators. Figures such as Bill Easton, Bob Timmons and Stanley Redwine have played a pivotal role in guiding their student-athletes to numerous honors and accolades. Beginning with Fay Moulton, who participated in the 1904 St. Louis Olympics, the Jayhawk track program has produced its share of Olympians, All-Americans and conference champions. That legacy continued under the tenures of Brutus Hamilton, Bill Easton, Bob Timmons and Gary Schwartz, individuals who each added memorable moments and accomplishments to the lore of Kansas track and field. Entering his eighth season, Stanley Redwine and his assembly of coaches have ushered a new era into the program’s storied history. Through the guidance of Redwine and his staff, the Jayhawks continue to make strides in improving the overall strength of the program. The men’s indoor track team finished eighth at both the 2001 and 2002 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, earning places in the Kansas Hall of Fame along with Coach Redwine. Also during Redwine’s tenure, 29 KU athletes have earned a total of 54 All-America awards while rewriting the school record books over 60 times. In 2007, coach Redwine sent 14 qualifiers to the NCAA Championships. The 14 competitors were the largest number of national competitors Redwine has taken to the event during his tenure. The names and faces have changed throughout the years, but the tradition of Kansas track and field remains as strong as any program in the nation.

Early Coaches In 1901, the KU track and field program began under the direction of Dr. James Naismith, the inventor of basketball. After turning over the reins to J.P. Hagerman in 1907, W.O. Hamilton, who replaced Hagerman, led the squad to its first Missouri Valley Conference championship in 1910. Karl Schlademan took control of the program in 1919 and developed the first

Jayhawk All-American and NCAA champion. In 1923, Tom Poor won the NCAA high jump and eventually placed fourth in the 1924 Paris Olympics. The Jayhawks nailed down two more Missouri Valley titles in 1927 and 1928 under the direction of Dr. H.J. Huff, who followed Schlademan, coaching the Jayhawks from 1927-1929.

In the early 1930s, Kansas track great Glenn Cunningham and three-sport letterman “Jarrin’ Jim” Bausch helped lead two Jayhawk teams to conference championships. Brutus Hamilton, one of two head coaches from Kansas in the National Track and Field Hall of Fame, came to Mount Oread in 1930 and led Kansas to two Big Six Outdoor Championships in 1930 and 1931. Bill Hargiss then took over the program and coached KU to the 1934 indoor and outdoor Big Six Championships. Hargiss coached KU’s first great shot putter, All-American Elwyn Dees, who was the 1935 NCAA champion.

The Easton Era KU’s program leveled off in the war years until 1948 when Kansas hired Bill Easton, former director of the Drake Relays. The Easton era began with distance runner Wes Santee’s success at the 1953 NCAA cross country meet, included the NCAA team championship, and ended with the Olympic performances of Billy Mills and Al Oerter in the 1960s. During his 17-year career, Easton’s cross country and track teams combined to win 38 conference titles and won at least one conference title each year. He was only the second collegiate coach to lead his track and cross country teams to a national championship, doing so with cross country in 1953 and track during the 1959 and 1960 seasons. Before he left in 1965, Easton’s track teams had accumulated 41 consecutive dual meet victories. In all, Easton coached a total of 54 All-Americans and 22 national champions, including 18 champions and 38 All-Americans in track. Easton passed away in October of 1997 at the age of 93. He is missed greatly by those associated with the Kansas track and field family.

The Timmons Era After Easton departed in 1965, KU’s track program was placed in the hands of Bob Timmons. “Timmie’s” teams captured 13 Big Eight indoor titles and 14 outdoor titles. He led the Jayhawks to three NCAA indoor championships in 1966, 1969 and 1970. Timmons’ 1970 outdoor team tied for the national championship with Oregon, BYU and Drake to give him four titles in five years. Timmons’ coaching career included teaching one of the world’s best track athletes in Jim Ryun. Recruited to Kansas by Timmons, his former high school coach, Ryun set world marks in the 1,500 meters, the mile and the 800 meters while wearing the pink and blue. Even though Timmons handed the reins of the KU track program to then head coach Gary Schwartz in 1988, he still has close ties to the team. In addition to being a loyal supporter at Jayhawk home meets, Timmons also plays a huge role in maintaining Rim Rock Farm, Kansas' cross country course, site of the 1998 NCAA Divisions I and II Cross Country Championships, and home to the 2006 Big 12 Cross Country Championships. Timmons donated the course to KU in 2005.

The Early Years In addition to the great accomplishments of Ryun, many other Kansas track athletes have distinguished themselves internationally. Starting with Fay Moulton in 1904, 31 athletes have represented KU in the Olympic Games. Of those athletes, 10 set world records in their events. Bausch, who lettered in football, basketball and track, was one of the first greats to run track at Kansas. “Jarrin’ Jim,” considered by some to be the best athlete in KU’s history, participated in track from 1929 to 1932. He broke the decathlon world record by scoring 8,462 points in the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics. In 1932, Bausch received the Sullivan Award as the best amateur athlete in America. In addition to track, he was also a tremendous talent in football, being inducted into the National Football Hall of Fame in 1954. In the mid-1930s, Kansas saw the emergence of another soon-to-be world record holder in

Glenn Cunningham. After surviving severe burns during a fire as a child, he helped the Jayhawks to Big Six Conference championships in 1931 and 1934. In 1934, he set the world record for both the indoor and outdoor mile. Cunningham ran a 4:08.4 at the Knights of Columbus Games in New York to break the indoor record. His outdoor record was a time of 4:06.7. While he finished fourth in the 1,500 meters at the 1932 Olympics, Cunningham garnered the silver medal at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. Between those two events, Cunningham established a world record in the 1,500 meters. In 1934, at an AAU meet in New York, he ran the event in a time of 3:53.3, beating the previous record of 3:55.4. In addition to his world records and Olympic performances, Cunningham received the Sullivan Award in 1933. In 1974, he became one of the first inductees of the National Track and Field Hall of Fame.

The Post-War Years During the 1940s, World War II was taking its toll on America’s youth reserves, but by 1950 Kansas had another outstanding talent on the squad. Born and raised in Ashland, Kan., Wes Santee excelled in distance events and cross country running. Santee broke the indoor mile record in 1954 with a time of 4:04.9. He broke his own record the next year with a time of 4:03.8. In the Big Seven Conference, Santee collected three indoor and outdoor records, plus two cross country titles. The mid-1950s saw Kansas enjoying its finest days in the track world. The Jayhawks won eight consecutive indoor and outdoor conference titles (1952-59). Santee led the 1953 cross country team to its first and only NCAA championship. One of the forces on those dominant Jayhawk teams was a discus thrower from Hyde Park, N.Y. Al Oerter’s career included two NCAA championship

titles (1957-58), four Olympic gold medals in four different Olympiads (1956, 1960, 1964 and 1968), and four world records in the discus. Oerter's best throw came in 1964 at the Mount San Antonio Relays in Walnut, Calif. He moved past his old record of 205-0.5 with a throw measuring 206-6. In addition to Oerter, KU had a premier shot put thrower in the late ‘50s. After capturing the silver medal at the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne, Australia, Bill Nieder went on to take the gold in Rome at the 1960 Olympics. In addition to being the 1955 NCAA champion, Nieder was the first collegiate shot putter to surpass the 60-0 barrier. He broke the world record in 1960 with a throw of 65-7.

Back-To-Back Titles In 1959 and 1960, Kansas extended its dominance over other track programs as it won back-to-back national outdoor championships. The squads were led by four outstanding athletes. Distance expert Billy Mills was the Big Eight cross country champion in 1960 and later took the gold medal in the 10,000 meters at the 1964 Olympics. In a dramatic race, Mills came from behind on the last lap to win the race. Mills also broke a world record in the six-mile run. Bill Alley was also a part of those national championship teams. The javelin thrower won the NCAA crown in 1959 and 1960. He broke an American throwing record in 1960 at 273-10.5. Alley traveled to Rome in 1960 for the Olympics, but did not qualify for the finals. A six-time All-American, sprinter Charlie Tidwell captured four NCAA titles during the two-year span. After winning the 220-yard hurdles title in 1958, Tidwell went on to take the 100-yard dash and the 200-yard hurdles in 1959 and win the 100 and 200 meter crowns the following year. During his career at KU, he set four new world records in the 100-meter dash (10.1), 100-yard dash (9.3), 200-meter low hurdles (22.6) and the 200-yard low hurdles (22.7). Joining Alley and Mills during those championship years was a hurdler named Cliff Cushman. Cushman’s performance in the 400-meter hurdles at the 1960 Rome Olympic Games earned him a silver medal. He earned two All-America awards in the same event in both 1959 and 1960.

The Jim Ryun Era In the latter part of the 1960s, a new star emerged at KU. Little did Jayhawk fans know that Jim Ryun would become one of the most prolific track figures in history. In 1964, at the age of 17, Ryun became the first high schooler to run a sub-four-minute mile. In fact, his high school mile mark of 3:55.3 stood for 31 years. Later in his collegiate career, he would shatter that record and many others. In his spectacular stint at KU from 1965 to 1969, he owned world records in the 880, 1,500, mile and two-mile runs. Outdoors, he established new marks in the 880 yards, 1,500 meters, mile, two-mile, three-mile and the 5,000 meters. At the NCAA Championships, he captured five titles (four indoor, one outdoor). To this day, he still holds 11 Jayhawk school records. Ryun, who was named Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman of the Year in 1966, was a three-time Olympian. During the same year, the Wichita, Kan., native was named the winner of the AAU Sullivan Award for the top amateur athlete in America. He won the silver medal in the 1968 Olympic Games in the 1,500 meters. In 1972, he was tripped up in the 1,500 and did not qualify for the finals. A winner of three U.S. titles in the mile, Ryun was inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1982.

The Modern Era Other Jayhawks stood out during the end of Jim Ryun’s career at Kansas. Gary Ard earned his place in the KU Hall of Fame by earning three All-America awards in the long jump between 1966 and 1967. He also teamed up with Ben Olison, Dwight Peck and Ryun to break the world sprint medley relay record at the 1967 Texas Relays with a time of 3:15.2. In 1969, Kansas finished first at the NCAA indoor meet and second at the outdoor finals. That team earned a staggering 21 All-America awards between both events. In 1970, Kansas topped its team achievement from the year before by sweeping both the Big Eight and NCAA indoor and outdoor national championship team titles. The Jayhawks were led by a remarkable throwing trio known affectionately as “the Pachyderms” for their physical prowess. Karl Salb, Steve Wilhelm and Doug Knop finished 1-2-3 in the shot put at the 1969 and 1970 NCAA Championships, earning All-America honors in the process. During the following year, Kansas completed the Big Eight sweep for the fifth straight year. In the last quarter century, Cliff Wiley was a member of the quartet that broke the world record in the 400-meter relay in 1977. He later was named to the 1980 U.S. Olympic Team. Deon Hogan excelled in the 400-yard dash. In 1981, he established a new world record (46.77). Kansas also made its mark in distance running. Craig Watcke was an All-American in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters and was voted the most valuable performer of the 1989 Big Eight Indoor Championships. In addition, Michael Cox captured All-America honors in the mile and the 1,500 meters as well as in cross country.

The Rise of the Women's Program While the men are entering their 107th year of competition, the women are youthful in comparison. KU women’s track is in only its 34th year as an organized program, starting in 1973. In some ways, the women’s program started out in similar fashion to the men. Both programs had no formal guidance in their formative years, and both were led by coaches who gained more notoriety in other sports. Under the direction of former KU women’s basketball coach Marian Washington, the women’s track program was born in 1973. In addition to coaching basketball and track, she also served as women’s athletics director. Teri Anderson became the fourth women’s coach in 1977. With Anderson at the helm, the KU women reached the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women national championships for the first time. The team also took second at the 1978 Big Eight indoor meet. In 1980, they were second at both the conference indoor and outdoor championships. Sheila Calmese was one of the first outstanding performers for the women. In 1978, Calmese placed first in the 300-yard dash and second in the 60-yard dash at the AIAW Indoor Championships . That same year, she added a third-place finish at the AIAW Outdoor Championships in the 100 meters. She was the first three-time All-American in Kansas women’s track history. Calmese still owns a share of the Kansas outdoor record in the 100-meter dash. Kansas was also paced in the early years by All-American Charmane Kuhlman. Kuhlman finished second in the long jump at the 1978 AIAW Indoor Championships. A third standout in the early years was Kansas City, Mo., native Shawn Corwin. Corwin was an All-American high jumper in both 1978 and 1979.

In 1981, Anderson was replaced by Carla Coffey. Coffey took Kansas to seven national championship meets. Her 1984 indoor team tied for 20th at the NCAA finals. The highest the Jayhawks have ever placed was in 1979 when they took third at the AIAW indoor meet. Under Coffey, Kansas became a national name in the throwing events. In 1984 and 1985, Stine Lerdahl was the Big Eight indoor champion in the shot put. In both those years, she gained All-American status when she placed sixth at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Anne Grethe Baeraas was the first woman at KU to be named an All-American in the javelin during the 1984 season. Denise Buchanan capped a brilliant career at Kansas, being named All-American in the shot put during both the indoor and outdoor season in 1987. She finished fifth at the NCAA Indoor Championships with a toss of 53-4.25, a school record. In fact, Buchanan broke both the indoor and outdoor shot put records at the NCAA finals. Ann O’Connor, a Salina, Kan., native, became an All-American her freshman year in the high jump in 1984. She set the indoor and outdoor record in the high jump while at KU as well as the pentathlon record. In setting her marks in the high jump, O’Connor became the first woman in Kansas track history to clear the 6-0 mark. Jumping Jayhawks For a time, the jumping events became KU’s most successful area. From the 1979 season through the 1990s, KU produced 31 All-Americans from the pole vault, high jump, long jump, triple jump, heptathlon or decathlon events. Much of the credit was deserved by vertical jumps coach Rick Attig, who coached at Kansas from 1985 through 2000. KU Hall of Famer Jeff Buckingham began the tradition in 1979 by finishing second in the pole vault at the NCAA indoor meet. Buckingham went on to earn three more All-America awards during his career. In 1980, Sonya Owolabi won the NCAA indoor title in the triple jump and finished his outstanding career as a three-time All-American. After Warren Wilhoite finished second and fourth in the long jump during the 1982 and 1983 NCAA indoors, Chris Bohanan and Scott Huffman finished third and fourth, respectively, in the 1986 NCAA indoor pole vault finals. Huffman added a second-place finish in the 1988 event and went on to bigger and better things. One of the top female performers at Kansas was three-time All-American Halcyon “Tudie” McKnight, who still owns both the indoor and outdoor long jump records. She was the Big Eight outdoor long jump champion from 1980 to 1983 and the 1982 indoor conference long jump champion. The Kansas Relays long jump event was renamed the “Halcyon ‘Tudie’ McKnight-Blake Women’s Long Jump” in 1995 to honor McKnight’s accomplishments as a Kansas long jumper. She still owns the Kansas Relays and Memorial Stadium long jump records. In 1993, Huffman won the U.S. Track and Field National Championships and placed fifth at the world championships. A former American pole vault record holder, Huffman joined former Jayhawk sprinter Pierre Lisk (Sierra Leone) at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. At the end of Huffman’s college career, two vaulters stepped in as KU’s leaders. Pat Manson and Cam Miller combined for nine All-America awards from 1987-1991. Manson’s leap of 18-8 at the 1989 Big Eight Indoor Championships remains as the KU record today. During that season, Manson,

Miller and teammate Cedric Fullard averaged a combined height of 18-5 to rank as the best collegiate pole vault trio ever.Sheila CalmeseSheila Calmese

Another vaulter who saw success at Kansas was two-time indoor All-American John Bazzoni. In 1995, he took honors in both the indoor and outdoor Big Eight pole vaulting championships. Earning All-America honors with Bazzoni in 1995 was high jumper Nick Johannsen. And most recently in 2002, KU vaulter Vadim Gvozdetskiy earned All-America honors in the pole vault. On the women’s side, 11 KU jumpers have taken home All-America awards since 1979. Charmane Kuhlman became the first women’s All-American in 1977, finishing second in the long jump at the NCAA Championships. Shawn Corwin was a four-time recipient in the high jump, earning a pair of runner-up finishes in 1978. Halcyon “Tudie” McKnight earned All-America honors in the long jump three times from 1982-1983. Ann O’Connor was named All-America in both the high jump and the heptathlon during her career from 1984-88, while Candace Mason and Andrea Branson were named All-Americans in the inaugural women’s pole vault competition in 1998. In the 2001 season, Branson was awarded All-American status at the indoor championships while Mason would join her in the outdoor championships. More recently, Amy Linnen and Kate Sultanova have brought much success to the pole vault for the Jayhawks. In addition to both being named 2005 outdoor All-Americans, Linnen was the indoor NCAA champion.

The Schwartz Era A 12-year coaching stint filled with numerous championships, All-Americans and fond memories brought exciting times for Kansas track and field fans near and far. Former head track and field coach Gary Schwartz began his career at Kansas not as a coach, but as an athlete. Schwartz was a Big Eight Conference

champion in the discus his junior year and a team co-captain his senior year. In all, the Schwartz era produced 41 All-Americans, 48 NCAA and AIAW appearances and several Olympic notables such as Pierre Lisk. Schwartz was added to the Kansas Hall of Fame in 1989 after taking Kansas to a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Championships and most recently worked with the USA Track and Field coaching staff in the 1999 World Outdoor Championships. A past president of the United States Track Coaches Association, Schwartz was respected by his peers and athletes both as a great

coach and teacher of Kansas track and field, who always had his student-athletes best interest at heart. MaryBeth Labosky continued KU’s high jump success when she went on to finish sixth at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Joining Labosky as an All-American was javelin thrower Heather Berlin, who placed fourth. Cathy Palacios also left behind a legacy at Kansas in 1992 that surely will be tough to match. Palacios broke four separate school records and earned All-America honors in the indoor mile. The 1992 and 1993 season also brought the Kansas women’s program back into the conference spotlight. KU placed second at the conference indoor meet in 1992, its highest finish in 13 years, and in 1993 placed second in the outdoor meet, its highest finish ever at the competition. In 1994, Kansas tied for second at the Big Eight indoor championships. Middle distance runner Kristi Kloster earned All-America honors in the 800 meters at the NCAA indoor meet that year, breaking the school record in the process. After battling through an injury-filled career, Kloster topped her 1994 performance two years later when she won the 800 meters at the 1996 NCAA indoor championships. After winning by .004 seconds in a spectacular photo finish, Kloster became KU’s first women’s NCAA track champion

and joined Sheila Calmese as the only women to win a national track and field title for Kansas. Kloster added a third All-America award in the same meet when she ran a leg of the seventh-place distance medley relay team with seniors Melissa Swartz and Kerri Woolheater and junior Latanya Holloway. Swartz picked up an individual All-America award of her own when she placed fifth in the mile. As a result, the four women finished 15th in the championships, KU’s best finish since the 1979 team, which finished third. In 1998, Candace Mason became just the third Kansas woman to earn three All-American distinctions when she finished in the top eight in both the pole vault and pentathlon competitions. She also broke the Big 12 and Kansas records in the pole vault, pentathlon and heptathlon. Mason took home two more All-American titles, giving her five total in her illustrious career, the most by any Jayhawk in team history. In all, Mason would earn three All-American awards in the heptathlon and two more in the pole vault. In 1998, Andrea Branson stepped on the scene and had a very productive pole vaulting career of her own. She would go on to win five All-American honors between 1998 and 2000, tying her with Mason for the most in program history. When she left KU, Branson had etched her name in the Kansas record books with the top vault in the history of KU women’s pole vaulting, both indoor and outdoor.

The Redwine Era With a new look in 2001, the Jayhawk track and field team came out with a mission to get better, and that was exactly what they did. Under first year head coach Stanley Redwine, the cross country team had its first NCAA participant since 1998 and recorded the best conference and regional finishes since the inception of the Big 12 Conference. That was just a sign of things to come as the men’s indoor team went on to finish eighth at the NCAA Indoor Championships, just a year after the team was only able to finish 47th.

Through the 2001 indoor and outdoor seasons, KU earned nine All-American awards beginning with Charlie Gruber, who won two, one in the indoor mile and the other as part of the Distance Medley Relay team. Other members of the All-American DMR team included Jabari Wamble, Andy Tate and Brian Blachly. Tate, another two-time winner in 2001, also was recognized as an All-American in the steeplechase.

Three highly talented field athletes won All-America honors, including Scott Russell in the weight throw, Ryan Speers in the shot put and Andrea Bulat in the javelin. The success continued in the 2002 season as the men’s indoor team finished eighth at the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive year, the team recorded 21 total NCAA qualifiers, celebrated eight Big 12 champions, broke 11 school records and watched senior thrower Scott Russell bring home two individual national titles. Russell was honored as both an Academic All-American and as the 2002 Big 12 Conference Outdoor Performer of the Year. Brooklyn Hann of the women’s team was honored as the conference Newcomer of the Year. In 2003, Kansas track and field was in the national spotlight when junior sprinter Leo Bookman won the 200m indoor and outdoor national championship titles. The KU coaching staff also watched as 30 of its athletes qualified for the Midwest Regional Championships, including 10 freshmen and five sophomores. The 2003 outdoor season produced 11 NCAA Championship qualifiers, the largest number of national competitors that Redwine had taken in his first four years at KU. Bookman shined again the next year, winning the indoor NCAA title in the 200-meter dash again. Bookman broke his own Kansas record in the process with a career-best time of 20.42. Gruber represented the Jayhawks in the Athens Olympics, competing for the United States in the 1,500 meters. In 2005, the Jayhawks saw continued success that included four Big 12 individual conference championships, one NCAA individual championship and eight All-Americans. For their efforts, Kate Sultanova was named Big 12 Outdoor Newcomer of the Year, Sheldon Battle was named Big 12 Outdoor Performer of the Year and Redwine garnered Big 12 Outdoor Coach of the Year honors. The 2006 season saw several Jayhawks collect conference and national accolades. Sheldon Battle capped off his impressive intercollegiate career by repeating as the Big 12 Indoor shot put champion and earned All-America status in the indoor shot put and the weight throw, while his performances during the outdoor season earned him All-American status in the shot put and hammer throw, capping off his two-year career at KU with six All-America

honors. For his performance that season, Battle was named the Midwest Field Athlete of the Year. Also in 2006, the line of great Kansas throwers continued as Egor Agafonov captured the Big 12 crowns in the indoor weight throw and the outdoor hammer, in which he set a new conference record. He went on to earn All-America awards in both events. On the women’s side, Charisse Bacchus earned All-America accolades with her fifth-place performance in the indoor long jump and her seventh-place result in the outdoor long jump. A total of six Jayhawks earned outdoor All-America awards coupled with three indoor All-Americans. The latest standouts on the women’s team include pole vaulters Amy Linnen and Kate Sultanova and triple jumper Brooklyn Hann. Linnen was the 2005 indoor NCAA champion in the pole vault, becoming the first KU woman to win an individual championship since Kloster in 1996. Sultanova has also been impressive in her pole vaulting career, capturing the 2005 Big 12 outdoor championship. Both Linnen and Sultanova garnered outdoor All-American honors at the 2005 NCAA outdoor championships. At the same meet, Brooklyn Hann finished eighth in the triple jump, good for All-American accolades. A highly successful 2007 season was highlighted by a national championship, numerous school records and several thrilling performances. During the indoor season, junior Egor Agafonov captured the NCAA Championship in the weight throw with the second best toss in school history (77-05.25 feet). Junior Colby Wissel finished seventh in the 3,000-meter run to become the first KU athlete to win All-America honors in the event. Just a few weeks earlier, at the Big 12 Championships, Agafonov defended his Big 12 title in the weight throw, Wissel won the 3,000-meter run and freshman Jordan Scott won the Big 12 Championship in the pole vault with a career-best indoor mark of 17-05.50 feet. Scott, for his efforts throughout the indoor season, was named the Big 12's Indoor Freshman of the Year. Scott also won the same award during the outdoor season, becoming the first male Jayhawk to win either distinction. Junior Kate Sultanova won the Big 12 title in the pole vault by tying a Big 12 meet record of 13-05.25 feet. Sultanova though, saved her best for the NCAA Indoor National Championships. Her vault of 14-01.25 feet earned her third place and tied the Kansas record set by 2005 national champion Amy Linnen. Sultanova's All-American effort helped the Jayhawks tie for 34th place at the NCAA's. Four other records went by the wayside as Ashley Brown set a new mark in the 60-meter hurdles, Victoria Howard broke the 200 meters record, Zlata Tarasova edged out her own record in the weight throw and Crystal Manning tied the school's best triple jump. The Jayhawks found a way to match their indoor success during the outdoor season. KU, for the first time in the school's history, had eight different athletes earn All-America honors as the men finished 18th and the women placed 35th at the NCAA Championships. At the conference championships, six members of the crimson and blue were crowned champions, the most since the inception of the Big 12. Ashley Brown, Crystal Manning and Zlata Tarasova led the women to their highest finish in team history under coach Redwine, placing fifth. Agafonov, the Big 12 and Midwest Regional Champion in the hammer throw was named to the CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America team after the conclusion of the season.

The concept of a major track and field meet at the University of Kansas was first espoused by legendary Kansas football coach John Outland. Outland grew up in the East and became heavily involved with the Penn Relays. It was Outland’s urging to then athletics director and basketball coach Phog Allen that a major Midwest competition could be successful. With the construction of Memorial Stadium in 1921, equipped with a quarter-mile track, plans were put in motion for the event. On April 20, 1923, the first Kansas Relays under the direction of Outland, Allen and Kansas track coach Karl Schlademan, were

conducted. More than 600 athletes from across the nation competed. Outland became known as the “Father of the Kansas Relays.” The first decade of the Kansas Relays saw the participation of such outstanding performers as Tom Poor, Jim Bausch and Glenn Cunningham of Kansas, Ed Weir of Nebraska, Jack Elder of Notre Dame and Tom Churchill of Oklahoma. Poor won the first Relays high jump at 6-0 1/4, and later placed fourth at the 1924 Olympics in Paris, France. Weir, a Cornhusker football star, set a world record (15.0) in the 120-meter high hurdles. Churchill and Bausch, also football stars, won consecutive decathlons in 1928-29 and 1931-32, respectively. Cunningham dominated the distance events in the mid-1930s, winning the mile run in 1934-35, and the two-mile in 1932, 1933 and 1936. Bausch and Cunningham both competed in the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics, with Bausch winning the gold in the decathlon. In 1936, Glen Morris of the Denver Athletic Club broke the American record in the decathlon with 7,576 points, defeating Kansas Olympian Clyde Coffman and Chicago’s Jay Berwanger, college football’s first Heisman Trophy winner. Dr. James Naismith, known as the father of basketball; Kansas basketball All-American Adolph Rupp; Notre Dame football coach Knute Rockne; and famed Kansas and Michigan football coach Fielding Yost appeared in the early days of the Relays as referees and officials. The 1940s ushered in the retirement of Cunningham who ran his last Relays in 1940. World War II made a major impact on the nation and caused the cancellation of the track event from 1943-45.The Relays were rekindled in 1946 as Harrison Dillard of Baldwin-Wallace College (Ohio) won the 120 high hurdles in 1946 and 1948, with the latter setting a world record. The Relays were in full stride in the 1950s with the presence of Kansas head coach Bill Easton, who came from Drake in 1948. It was the beginning of the Jayhawks’ dominance in the conference and Midwest relays circuit. Two top Kansas athletes came in the form of weightman Al Oerter and distance ace Wes Santee. Oerter, who went on to win four Olympic golds, won consecutive Relays shot put titles in 1956, 1957 and 1958. Santee, who followed in Cunningham’s footsteps, became the only athlete to win the most outstanding performer award at the Kansas, Drake and Texas Relays. Santee won the Kansas Relays title in 1952 and 1954, and registered the second-fastest American time ever in the mile in 1954. Also a part of the Relays was the State of Kansas interscholastic meet featuring Sunflower State high school competition. The event began in 1904 and was split between large and small school classes. The division was dropped in 1958 and the competition among schools of all sizes produced some of the best high school marks at that time. While the state of Kansas began competitions among the various classes later on, the Kansas Relays has still retained the high school portion of the meet. High school athletes from Kansas and neighboring states still compete. The 1960s saw a changing of the guard in Kansas track and field as Easton was replaced by Bob Timmons as head coach in 1965. Kansas continued its dominance of the conference with the appearance of Wichita, Kan., native Jim Ryun. Perhaps the most decorated Jayhawk track athlete ever, Ryun has four Kansas Relays most outstanding performer titles to his credit (1966-67-69-71). He is the only athlete to take home the honor on four occasions. In 1967, Ryun set the current Relays record in the mile run at 3:54.94. The 1970s saw the world’s top sprinters come to the Kansas Relays as Missouri and

professional football standout Mel Gray won three university titles in the 100-yard dash (1969-71). In the open 100-yard dash, Olympians John Carlos, Herb Washington and Ivory Crockett each took titles in the early portion of the decade. One familiar competitor from Graceland (Iowa) College who later gained fame as a 1976 Olympic gold medalist was decathlete Bruce Jenner. The 1971 titlist as a collegian, he also won the 1974 crown. His 8,240 points stood as a record until 1983.

Female athletes made their first appearance in 1962 in a limited number of events. By 1976 a full array of women’s events were sponsored. Perhaps the most dominant performer ever on the women’s side was former Nebraska standout and Olympian Merlene Ottey. She won most outstanding performer titles in 1981, 1982 and 1983, and still owns the 100 and 200-meter dash records. Former Iowa State standout and Olympic gold medalist Nawal El Moutawakel of Morocco set a collegiate record in the 400-meter hurdles in 1984. The 1980s continued the stream of top athletes to Mount Oread, including a contingent from the Soviet Union in 1983. Many of the top Olympians made the historic journey to Lawrence and smashed several records. Pole vaulter Joe Dial set the university and invitational vault records en route to being named the men’s outstanding performer in 1985 and 1987. Dial was also the first high school athlete to be named as the Relays’ outstanding performer when he competed for Marlow (Okla.) High in 1980. 1996 KU Olympian Scott Huffman etched his name in the Relays history book by being named the outstanding performer in 1988. A combination of speed and distance marked the Kansas Relays in the 1990s. After Drake sprinter Kevin Little and Kansas State All-America thrower Angie Miller were recognized as the top performers in 1990, Barton County Community College won four of the next six

outstanding performer awards. Barton County’s Inez Turner took the honor twice, winning back-to-back honors in 1992 and 1993. Kansas looked strong in both team and individual accomplishments during the Relays of the late 90’s. Former Jayhawk All-American Michael Cox was named the men’s outstanding performer three times in that span. He earned his first two awards in 1992 and 1995 as a member of the KU track team, and in 1996, Cox returned to win his third award after finishing with a time of 3:59.20 and becoming the first Kansas runner to finish the mile in under four minutes at the Kansas Relays since Jim Ryun did so in 1972. In 1994, KU swept the men’s and women’s collegiate team titles. Also, Natasha Shafer became

the first Kansas woman to be named outstanding performer. Jayhawk hurdler Dawn Steele-Slavens duplicated Shafer’s effort by winning the award in 1995. The 1996 Relays also featured a new event as the women’s pole vault was held for the first time. Stacy Dragila, the top-ranked vaulter in America, won the event and set the American record by clearing 13-6.50 feet. Her effort enabled her to be named the 1996 women’s outstanding performer. The 1997 event was a very successful one for KU. Not only did the team earn several individual titles, but the men were named university relays champions. 1997 marked the inaugural running of the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase, and the event also saw Kevin Toth (unattached), who was named the men’s most outstanding performer, shatter the Relays’ 24-year old shot put record. Toth’s throw of 71-02.50 feet made him the 1997 world leader. After a break in competition due to construction on Memorial Stadium, the Kansas Relays returned in 2000 with the excitement and energy that Kansas Relays fans had enjoyed from years past. Since the turn of the century, the eventual 2000 Olympic gold-medal winner in the 100 meters, Maurice Greene, set a new stadium and meet record in the 400-meter relay with a blazing time of 38.45 seconds. The 2001 Relays, ‘An Olympic Return,’ saw some big names make their way back to their old stomping grounds. Former Kansas greats Jim Ryun and Wes Santee excited the crowd with a traditional lap around Memorial Stadium as several Kansas legends and Olympians including Billy Mills and Jim Hershberger gathered to sign autographs for fans and present awards to the winning teams. Day three of the Relays was a day of record breaking performances. Eight Kansas Relays records were broken along with a Memorial Stadium record in the women's shot put by Kansas State's Rebekah Green. The 2005 Relays was one of the more anticipated events in its history. Several records fell over the three day meet. Dominique Arnold and Muna Lee, both of Team Nike, broke Relays records in the 110-meter hurdles (13.33) and the 100-meter dash (11.1), respectively. Both were named the 2005 Kansas Relays Most Outstanding Performers for their efforts. 2005 also saw the addition of the GOLDZONE, a three-hour window in the meet that featured over 30 former Olympians. The second-largest crowd in Kansas Relays history (24,200) watched as several world-class athletes performed at the highest level, including Maurice Green, Marion Jones, Amy Acuff and Charlie Gruber. More recently, at the past two Relays, a combined 36,000 track and field fans have passed through the gates at Memorial Stadium. The GOLDZONE continued in 2007, the 80th edition of the Kansas Relays, as some of the greatest athletes in the world continue to flock to Lawrence in order to etch their names alongside the legendary track and field athletes who have covered the past 80 years of the Kansas Relays.
