This has been a rough month for me my computer CRASHED! Lost all my documents,

email addresses, saved emails, everything. We went out and bought a new computer, but

these new ones are nothing like what I was used to using. Those of you that have never had

this happen to you (yet!) cant realize how lost it makes you feel. I was about ready to join

Jerry Davis back to using a Big Chief Tablet and a #2 pencil ! After several weeks of

testing my vocabulary, I think Im back in business. And then theblizzardhit town!

Martha (Love) Churchs neighborhood didnt know what hit it when the Class of 57

converged there on Saturday, Jan. 22nd

Missouri weather wasdeep snow all week, but He turned it off long enough for our Class to

get to Marthas house to meet and honor our Class President, Fred Peery. Fred looked

wonderful and seemed to thoroughly enjoy all the visiting, jokes and stories of the past, lots

of food and picture-posing. There were 29 of us there (17 classmates, plus spouses &

friends) .. a real houseful. Everyone brought a covered dish or two, which we spread out

completely covering Marthas kitchen. And heres aBelieve It Or Not for you

MARILYN Pruyn and MARILYN Williams both brought the same dish! Now whats theodds of that?!?! (What I call Cherry Fluff very easy, very good Ill add the recipe

to the bottom of From Sharons Kitchen page) As we were leaving, He turned the

snowfall back on a beautiful drive home.

Heres amessage from your President that Fred asked me to publish . . .

Marilyn, Fred asked that I send this to you for the newsletter. Joyce and I want to add our thanksto everyone for making this such a grand time for Fred. It meant so much to all of us. I am

You will never know how much I appreciated the wonderful get-together we had on January 22.I want to thank Margaret for getting everyone together and Martha for offering her home and

making us all feel so welcome. I was overwhelmed by the number of people that came. Theweather wasnt the greatest and there was a threat for more snowbut you came anyway. Jerry

and Geraldine even drove up from Oklahoma. My sisters brought me and they too weresurprised and pleased with the turnout. I never saw such a spread of food. There are a lot of

good cooks in the Class of 57.

An update from Freds sister, Carolyn McCoy, on Sunday, Feb.6th

Fred is getting weaker in his legs but he still bosses us all around HA!! He still eats well and

healthwise, he is doing pretty good. Just hard to get around. He wants to stay in his own homeas long as possible and with help he can do that. We got around 18" of snow and Fred got more

than that. In fact, Friday evening he got 2" more and we didn't get a drop--thank goodness. Willbe so glad to see Spring and to start that garden. Take care, stay warm. Carolyn

My submission this month is the schedule of our upcoming GTG and some personal commentstherein.

APRIL GTGTO ABSENT FRIENDS

Another great weekend for the Class is scheduled for Friday 4/29 through Sunday 5/1.The almost

finalized schedule of events follows; the theme will be To Absent Friends. But first , just ashort personal note.

The recent death of Jack Smith (58), fellow pan man at Hoods Hatchery and the plights ofFred and Ted have profoundly affected me. While all of us are immortal (well, we were back in

high school, werent we?), sometimes bad things happen to good people. I have not been able to

attend the LS GTGs (including, lamentably, last months special one for Fred) for the past year-

plus, because of some health hiccups of my own. However, I am going to be in Lees Summitfor this one come hell or high water.

As you all know, the Class means a great deal to me, and I am determined to see as many people

as I can as soon and as often as I can. It is my hope that you will be one I see this April.

Jack Rendall Smith

Jack Rendall Smith was born February 25, 1940, in Lee's Summit, Missouri, to Leo Jackson and Grace (Cox)

Smith. He died January 25, 2011 in Houston, Texas at the age of 70 years and 11 months. Jack graduated from

Lee's Summit Missouri High School in 1958. He was the Editor of "58" Reflections, a monthly newsletter he began in

order to keep contact with his high school graduation class. He was instrumental in organizing the 50th class reunion,

which was a huge success. In April, 2010, he was inducted into his High School Hall of Fame, based on his

leadership, community service, and citizenship.

Jack spent his entire career of over 50 years in the field of aerial reconnaissance and aerial survey photography.

He began his career in the United States Air Force in 1959 as an aerial photographer and photo lab technician where

he gained valuable experience in a field he loved and chose to follow. While serving in the U.S.A.F. Jack was

attached to the photographic group assigned to the Astronaut and Aerospace Program. These were the first two

groups of Astronauts to go into space for the United States and they were photographed daily. Upon leaving the AirForce Jack continued his profession entering the civilian sector of the aerial survey photography industry. During his

career he worked for RADAT Systems, Utility Data Corporation, Air Photo Services, Remote Sensing Institute at

South Dakota State University, Aero Service Corporation and Intera Technologies. In May 1994 he became a

principle and Vice President with Aerial Viewpoint, the largest aerial photography mapping company in Texas. He

spent the last 17 years overseeing the photo lab and historical data resale operations. Jack was also a Partner in the

ownership of a hangar and office facility, located at Hooks Airport, Spring, Texas. He owned a Patent that describes

the method in which a hole is cut in the bottom of a Piper Navajo airplane for installation of aerial cameras.

Jack was active with the American Legion and his church, Cy-Fair Christian Church. He always worked with the

youth of the community where he resided. Through his talents and enjoyment of sports, he taught young people the

value of sportsmanship, and through his donations, he provided them with the opportunity to become involved in

teamwork.

On May 20, 1961, he married Anna Marie Wesson and to this union, three children were born. On June 22,1979,

he married LuAnn (Penrod) Thibeault and opened his arms and heart to three more children.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother Billie Tom Smith. He is survived by his wife, LuAnn, of the

home; his former wife, Anna Smith of Austin; two sisters: Kay Paul, Lee's Summit, MO; and Beulah Emry, Peculiar,

MO; and his mother-in-law, Allene Penrod of Roosevelt, OK. His children: Cheryl Belman and husband Armando of

Helotes, Tx, Tricia Varnell and husband Randy of Kill Devil Hills, NC; Darren Smith and wife Carol of Rowlett, Tx;

Peter Thibeault and wife Beverly of Tulsa, OK; Teran Martin and fianc Darrell Rutledge of Houston, and Robert

Thibeault and wife Ramona of Spring. Eleven grandchildren: Lisa Rangel, Jennifer Ramirez , Tina Varnell, Sarah

Varnell, Jacob Smith, Maddie Smith, Hearther Wilson and husband Chad; Harley Martin; Christopher Thibeault and

wife Randi, Jon Robert Thibeault, Ryan Thibeault. Four great-grandchildren: Dylan Rangel, Haley Ramirez, Charles

and Cason Wilson. Also several cousins, nieces and nephews. Jack was a man who loved his family, was devoted

to his beliefs, and cared for those in need. He was a generous, giving man who had a quiet strength of remarkable

character. He will be greatly missed.

Jacks wife, LuAnn, sent us the following, along with this note: The celebration of Jacks life was

beautifully done with eldest son, Pete, in charge. All three sons delivered eulogies of their memories ofJack, some funny, some reflective, and some sadness in their feelings of loss of their beloved Dad. The

Air Force Honor Guard and Jacks American Legion Post were also involved. It was humbling to see

how many long-time friends Jack had from our old neighborhood across town, his business world,

neighbors and church. The pallbearers were Jacks business partner and their employees. A cold front

came through the morning of the services and, wouldnt you know, our electricity went out. I had 5people plus myself trying to get dressed and put on makeup in the dark! Maybe Jack had the last laugh at

us. I am at peace because of faith and the knowledge Jack is in a better place, no longer suffering.However, I will always miss him.

From Sharons Kitchen . . .

Remember those little Valentines we shared with our first grade classmates? Heres my

heart-healthy Valentine to each of you this year. My girls and grandkids love it. We

quadruple the recipe and use it on meats, egg dishes, and vegetables. We call it

Prairie Dust

1 tablespoon salt substitute

1 teaspoon paprika

1 teaspoon ground black pepper

teaspoon onion powder

cayenne pepper (I use a bit less for myself)

teaspoon turmeric

teaspoon garlic powder

teaspoon ground coriander

Mix it up and put it in a shaker.

Sounds simple and delicious, Sharon thanks! We can all use a lot more healthy for

our hearts! cuz our classmates have such BIG hearts!!!

Now, as promised, heres the recipe for Marilyn & Marilyns . . .

Cherry Fluff

Stir together 1 med-size (8 oz) container Cool Whip and 1 can Eagle Brand condensed

milk; add 1 can Cherry Pie Filling and 1 can crushed pineapple (drained); pour into 9 x 12

flat dish and refrigerate. (Marilyn Pruyn freezes hers) Easy, huh? AND delicious!

Try it, youll like it!

And from the mailbox . . .Weve had Jerry Weber on our deceased classmates list, but I hadnt heard when or how

he died. This note came on my Facebook page recently (you hear a lot of bad talk about

Facebook, but if used carefully it can be a good tool) . . .

Love looking at the pictures on Facebook. Found one of my brother Jerry Weber at theblackboard. Don't know if anyone knows, but he passed away in 2001, esophageal cancer.

Jim Brown (my obit watcher) called to let me know that the obituary of the mother of

our classmate, Paul Bacon, was published in the K.C. Star on January 23rd

. We all sendour sympathies to you, Paul . . .

Winnie M. Bacon, 86, Raytown, MO, passed away Thursday, January 20, 2011, at Centerpoint Medical

Center. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. followed by services at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 25, at thePark Lawn Chapel, 8251 Hillcrest Road, Kansas City MO; burial in Green Lawn Cemetery. Winnie wasborn January 30, 1924, in Ellington, MO. She had worked for the Raytown Public Schools, and was a

member of Eastside Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Paul W.

Bacon, Sr. in 1995. Survivors include two sons, Paul W. Bacon, Jr. and his wife Ruth of Pueblo, CO,and Jerry Bacon of the home; two daughters, Kimberly Richardson of Raytown, MO, and Loretta

Armstrong and her husband, David, of Woodland Park, CO; 14 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren;

and six great- great-grandchildren. (Arr.: Park Lawn Funeral Home)

A recent health update from Ted Atkins (2/4)

Lizbeth Salander's T-shirt, in the novel "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo", reads "Armageddon

was yesterday. Today we have a serious problem." Well, not really. I'm in the middle of mysecond chemo cycle for pancreatic cancer and it's still going pretty good. I continue to growextremely fatigued and get dizzy when I stand up quickly. And, weirdly, my nails have stoppedgrowing. Hair still intact and no other side effects. Trooper Karen has been a rock. She'sfattening me up. After losing 42 pounds last year I've put 8 back on. All bloodwork testshave remained in the satisfactory range. Prayers tossed and fingers crossed. Thank you somuch for your support. Luv ya all...Ted kruzers @msn.com

Ive heard a couple of our classmates have been fighting the ol flu bug lately. Joyce

(Slagle) Hitchcock has spent several weeks in this flu war but finally won out YEA!

Got this note from Jean (Lush) Staub Ive been sick over three weeks with the flu.Even went to the ER to have lungs checked; they were o kay. And I had the flu shot!Ive

heard the shot doesnt always keep you from getting the flu but, if you do get it, usually it

wont be as bad. But I sometimes wonder whatthey consider BAD?!

Hope you both (and any others that might have entered this war but havent shared the

information under cover, you might say) continue to improve so you can get to our Aprilclass gtg and Scholarship Award Ceremony!!

From Margaret (Davis) Offen . . .

Marilyn, boy, that snow storm was something else, wasn't it. We have so much snow in our driveway it

will take forever to melt. They did shovel part of it though but the drifts are pretty high.

We had a great time on January 22 with a GTG honoring our president. Think a good time was had by

all. We had a good turnout of about 30 people. The food was awesome and the company was great.

There was so much food that it was hard not to take a little of each item. Tom and I stayed and helped

Martha clean up after everyone left. The salt was tracked in on her rug so we cleaned that up. It was

really hard to get up but we finally got it done. We are planning our GTG in April and hope we have a

good turnout for that also.

My son finally has a full time job and part-time job after all these months. Hopefully, he can get back on

his feet once again. It has been 3 years, ever since his divorce, that he has been struggling so much.

Really, not much more news from the Offen's only that we are ready for spring. Hope all is well with

your family and maybe we can meet sometime for lunch. Take care, Margaret

The Government has issued a travel warning due to the winter weather. They suggest that anyone

traveling in the current icy conditions should make sure they have the following: Shovel, Blankets OrSleeping Bag, Extra Clothing Including Hat And Gloves, 24 hours worth of food, De-Icer, Rock Salt,

Flashlight With Spare Batteries, Road Flares Or Reflective Triangles, Full Spare Gas Can, First Aid Kit,

and Booster Cables.

Heres the update weve been waiting for from Judy (Yeaman) DeTar-Hicks regarding herrecent surgery

Greetings. Really, I have not been abducted by Aliens...in spite of the fact that I have this 12 inch scardown the back of my neck. The scar is residue of my Nov. 30 extensive neck surgery. Pinchednerve/nerves caused me major problem all summer...and after 4 consults with specialist and many tries to

alleviate the situation, surgery was the choice. I wore a soft neck brace for 6 wks. Pain meds and latenight TV and I became good friends. Thankfully most pain gone at this time. When it returns, I know Ihave overdone. My care at University of Colorado Hospital was outstanding. My situation was caused byStenosis of the Spine.(shrinking and narrowing ) Happens as we become older in many of us. Most haveno symptoms...or it strikes usually in lower spine. I can expect to see improvement even in the nextyear. Already I have regained much strength in left hand and arm. However two fingers still not workingwell. Details of surgery fascinating to me...cut muscles, saw apart 4 vertebrae, sew back together withmetal thread. No pins, no plates, no screws. So with all that doing, I consider myself very lucky that myproblem had a solution...and hope.

(As I told Judy, only SHE would look at her own surgery as an educational experience!)

Enough of the medical report. No travel plans so far this year. Just enjoying warm weather in

Arizona. Temp today 75..heading for 80's soon. Will get back to Denver early May in time to think aboutplanting garden, working on the 1933 cottage, and getting in good camping throughout the state ofColorado.

This time last year we were in Morocco. Spent a month in Agadir in an apartment in a middle classneighborhood. We love that country and its' people. Had delightful time as 2 sets of friends joined us atseparate times. Made friends with one shopkeeper especially. He went out of his way to help us have apleasant stay. We enjoyed the shopping at the hyper-grocery (much like an upscale Wal-Mart) and alsoat the Souk. (bought all our fresh produce there). Did lots of walking, and took wild taxi rides severaltimes. Rented car and went on several day trips and wild rides of our own into mountains (on anovernight). Encountered being targeted by "traffic police" while in rental car. Pay the fine or go to

jail. Paid the fine. Back in our city we were invited by our shopkeeper friend for Friday dinner. (a veryspecial occasion in that part of the world ) He and we were sadly disappointed that we could not work itout and had to return home.

In the past several weeks I have been glued to TV watching the difficult weather in mid-west and north aswell as the happenings in Egypt. We were there 5 yrs ago on the first trip Bill and I did together. Egypt,Israel, Jordan. My first trip there, one of many for Bill. Watching history in the making is incredible. Andseems even more personal when recalling having been in those exact places. I know I am not alone inhoping that tourism can return to that area. It is a major part of the economy there. And the rest of uscome away richer for just having viewed the treasures of another country.

Tomorrow is a jaunt to art colony south of Tucson. Always a treat for me, and Bill is a good sport to goalong. He will drink lemonade and people watch. And mostly what I will do is window shop and enjoyother's talents displayed.

Thank you for the picture you posted on the GTG last in L.S. Wish I could have been there. That good

looking group of people seemed truly full of peace and well-being. Loved those smiles. Don't know yet ifI will make the April doing; seems doubtful now, but situations change.

Thanks too for putting together the NL. It is heartwarming to hear what is happening to our '57ers.Fondly, Judy
