March has always been one of my favorite months of the year. Guessthats the Irish coming out in me! I love all the green; I love that its
the month between a long, cold winter and opening the door to spring;and I LOVE March Madness!! Im as big a basketball fan as I am a
football fan (Im sure I got this from my Dad), at least at the highschool/college levels. I dont know .. or care .. much about the NBA.
But, since our first Scholarship presentation in 2005, March has meant even more to me. Itmeans April is getting closer and before long it will be time for our Class GTG andceremony awarding our Paul D. Coverdell (1957) Memorial Scholarship honoring, thisyear 26, deceased members of the Class of 1957. Thats approximately 20% of ourgraduating class. Sounds like were still holding pretty good for 70+ year olds. RobertDunning put it very well in the sign on his car for the Homecoming Parade in 2007 whenwe were celebrating our 50th Class Reunion . . .

Another of our 1957 classmates is making his mark on the World . Mercy In Action was
founded in 2001 by Bob and Ruby Nell Hoke after they had made several ministry trips to East
Africa. They serve as President and Vice President. Below are pictures and excerpts taken from
their websitehttp://www.mercyinactionintl.org
WELCOME TO MERCY IN ACTION INTERNATIONAL (MIA)Were a Christian ministry where Jesus is Lord and that has a passion for the lost and the downand out, both children and adults and that goes into areas of East Africa where very few othersgo.
ABOUT US...
Mercy In ActionInternational is an IRS approved, tax exempt, 501c3 Christian HumanitarianFoundation, headquartered in Lees Summit, Missouri.
Mercy In Action is governed by a board of directors of which all board members and office
staff donate their time and pay 100% of all of their personal travel expenses. This includes Boband Rubys twice a year trips to East Africa. This allows for ministry overhead expenses of lessthan 1%.
Mercy In Action utilizes a unique strategy designed to communicate, and to further the Gospelof Jesus Christ in ways ancillary to preaching of the word of God:
-- Food -- School Books/Supplies-- Clothing -- Bibles-- Medical Supplies -- Land and Churches-- Special Transportation -- Education Expenses
Graduation ceremonies of 59 Maasai Pastors after one week of training at Mike and Marigolds Maasai Bible
Training Center being constructed near their NAMELOK bush camp. MIA gave out 565 New Testament Bibles for
each pastor and their church.

Mathare Valley is a largeslum in Nairobi, Kenya with upwards of 500,000 people living in
abject poverty. In 1995 Pastors Peter and Jane Nuthu agreed to take over a long vacated KAG
church in a part of the slum called Kariobangi. MCDC was started with twelve street boys who
came to help to clean up the church grounds each Saturday. Bread and water was given to them
and the word quickly spread because for the first time in their lives they had a piece of fresh
bread and a cup of clean water along with some water to bathe and wash their clothes. Rubymet Peter and Jane (called Mamma Jane) in 1997 and Bob in 1999. They joined forces withthem in 2000.
Mamma Jane and Ruby
MCDC ADOPT A CHILD PROGRAM
Soon after MIA was finalized in 2001 Bob and Ruby started the MCDC (Methare ChildDevelopment Center) Adopt-A-Child program for the street kids. People all over America nowsponsor one or more of these MCDC kids. $25.00 per month for K-8th grade and $35.00 for permonth for 9th through 12thgrade provides for the childs:
Kenya accredited education PK-12
Hot nutritious meals each day
Medical treatment
School uniforms, including shoes
A Jesus based Christian education
As of October, 2010 there were 852 street kids in MCDC. Of these, 426 are presently sponsored. Thebalance of them need sponsors!
I could go on and on about this wonderful organization established by Bob and his wife, Ruby, and still not
get all the information in here. You really need to go to their websitehttp://www.mercyinactionintl.org andread up on it and see all the pictures. What an interesting and exciting experience theyve had! Heres a noteI received from Bob when I asked permission to publish from his website . . .
Marilyn, We (MERCY IN ACTION INTERNATIONAL) have a new web-site under construction. Its about80-90% complete. You can go to it at: www.mercyinactionintl.org and see what we do. Pull up thenewsletters that we do after each ministry trip. We leave again Feb. 4th for a month with the street kids inthe Nairobi slum plus time in the bush with the Maasai. Appreciate your help in getting the word out.In Him, Bob

Now for the EDUCATIONAL portion of the newsletter . . .
Heres a piece of information Ill bet a lot of us didnt know; at least I dont remember ever
hearing this before . . .
The original LSHS school song was written in 1935 by Mrs. Harry McMillan and MissElaine Wiltsee, and arranged in 1936 for band and piano by Mrs. Itrice Ellis Eubanks.
Also, there was a second verse I dont think we were ever taught. Heres the song in total
LSHS HERES TO THEE
Theres a school in old Missouri,that is second unto none.
We love to sing her praises,and tell the things shes done.
Were proud of her past record,
and we all pledge loyalty,To the school we love so dearly,LSHS heres to thee.
Lees Summit, Lees Summit,your colors well proudly fly,
And well all be ever loyalto our dear old LS High.
As the years roll swiftly onward,and we leave her dear old halls,
our thoughts turn ever backwardas memory recallsthe things weve done together
and the happiness untoldAnd well all be ever loyal
To our dear old Black and Gold.
Lees Summit, Lees Summit,your colors well proudly fly,
And well all be ever loyalto our dear old LS High.
~~~~~
I, myself, would like to addthis loyalty is not to test;
54 years after graduating andOur Class is still the BEST!
From Sharons Kitchen . . .As winter comes to an end and life begins to renew, there are so many things to do, plans
to make, seeds to order and cobwebs to clean out of our houses and heads. Thoughts turn to
lighter, fresher, faster meals which boils down to a single word --- pasta.
Fettuccine Alfredo
cup (1 stick) butter dont use margarine2 cloves garlic, minced2 cups heavy cream1/8 teaspoon ground black pepperPinch of salt cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
1 12 oz box fettuccine pasta
Melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium/low heat.
Add the garlic, cream, pepper and salt, and bring to a simmer. Turn the heat down if the mixturegets close to a boil or it could boil over. Add the cheese and continue to simmer sauce for 8 minsor until thick. Watch the heat. If heat is too high, the sauce could curdle. You just want asimmer.
While sauce cooks, bring a big pot of water to a boil and add the pasta. Cook about 12 mins oruntil done; then drain.
Put pasta on serving plates and pour Alfredo sauce over the top.
Makes 2 or 3 large servings.* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Mmmmmmm sounds GOOD, Sharon!
And, talk about good, heres a message I received from Susan Miller (58) referring to
another of Sharons wonderful recipes . . .
Marilyn, a brief note for the newsletter:
One cold day in Flagstaff I decided to get the ingredients for the Black Bean and Sausage Pasole "From
Sharon's Kitchen." I got out the big soup pot, made it, and served it on Souper Bowl Sunday. Everyone
LOVED it! Thanks, Sharon. Susan MillerThanks for the critique, Susan.
While were with the Class of 58, LuAnn Smith asked me to put the word out that she
hopes someone from the Class will step up to continue Jacks work with the Reflections
newsletter. She said shed be happy to share his mailing list with you and she would like
to be included on your mailing list. With everything else shes taken on with their business,
etc., she just doesnt have time to do it herself. Also, Id be happy to give you any help I
can from what Ive learned here with the Hi-Life II. I truly think youd enjoy it, as I do.
And from the mailbox . . .
Karen Winterowd writes . . .
'Been thinking since before Christmas that I really am allergic to Santa Fe - the altitude - the
plethora of stuff that I really am allergic to. Quit smoking on my birthday - 12-24-39 - to see if
that REALLY is the demon. It was - but not totally. Maybe some of us just can't live at 7,000
feet. My blood pressure continues to be elevated & the night time 02 seems to help w/the 02
sat's. Anyway, I have placed our home on the market w/Richard Mares (someone told me years
back that Richard has a way of moving real estate & we all know that this is NOT the time to be
selling your home!!!!!) The real estate market ($$$$$) isn't as important as our health & that is
what this has come down to. Sandy has been thinking along w/me that he, too, might bephysically healthier at a lower elevation secondary to his weakened heart.
So our wild plan is when the house sells we will purchase a 5th wheel trailer/bigger pick-up to
handle it & depending upon the season, go to a lower elevation where it is warmer or if it is
Summer, go to an elevation where it is cooler. As long as Sandy's Mother is living, she is 93, we
will stay somewhere relatively close to her.............my dream is to take a year & explore
California, I'm fascinated with that region & I've never fallen out of love w/Florida & parts of the
Southeast. Kristen is concerned but, also, a little interested in this idea & I feel that she is
behind us in our adventure. I'm sure that we will be back frequently for visits & Dr.'s
appointments, etc., etc., etc.!
And so prayers & cheers for the sale of the home. I have a lifetime of collectibles & furniture,
also, to get rid of. We will have our cell 'phones & computers to keep in touch & if you are in
the area where we "gypsied" to, PLEASE let us know. xoxo Karen
Don't pick up any plastic bottles that may be lying in your yards or in the gutter, etc. Payattention to this. A plastic bottle with a cap. A little Drano. A little water. A small piece offoil. Disturb it by moving it; and BOOM!! No fingers left and other serious effects to your face,
Received a message from Jeanne (Mrs. Don) Lawrence informing us that Don took a fall
mid-to-late February
Just got home from Cox South. Left Don there. He fell this morning in the drive while he wasgetting ready to go fishing with the neighbor guys. Took him to Springfield for an x-ray when I
got home at 1. He finally got in a room in ER at 8 and then did a cat scan because there showeda hairline fracture in his left hip area. Showed that he has a break in the area above the placewhere the ball is. They called it a crown. No surgery but he has to be off of it for quiteawhile. Could be 2 months. Not sure how we are going to do this since he can't hop on his rightleg since it is the one that has the replacement. We have a walker but not sure just how that willwork. Will access the problem and hopefully learn more tomorrow. Going to bed- I am tired.
And later
He went to Cassville on the 22nd to what they call a swing bed for physical and occupationaltherapy. I brought him on last Thursday March 3. He is doing quite well. No surgery as the
fracture is in place. He is in a wheel chair and or using a walker. We do have a couple of chairsthat he can sit in but only does it when I am here since he is afraid that he might not be able toget out of one. We go to Springfield to the dr on the 16th and hopefully learn that it is healingand maybe he can put some weight on it. He doesn't seem to be in too much pain unless he doestoo much exercise. More later. Jeanne Lawrence
Thanks, Jeanne, for keeping us informed. Please let us know how the Dr appointment goes
on the 16th.
A note from Margaret (Davis) Offen . . .
Hi there, Thought I would try and get something off to you today for the nl but really not much
from the Offen's at this particular time. March came in like a lamb so it will probably go out like
a lion. Supposed to snow again this week I think. Sure ready for Spring. I'm flying to Atlanta
the 6th of April for a few days to visit my cousin. Haven't flown in 10 years and I always have to
have a few relaxing drinks before I get on the plane. Know it will be okay but still get a little
nervous.
Looking forward to the GTG the end of April. Hopefully, there will be a good turnout. Margaret
Received this warning from Larry Beary checked out and TRUE Kids are putting Drano, tin foil, and a little water in soda bottles and capping it up - leaving it onlawns. When you go to pick up the trash, and the bottle is shaken just a little - in about 30seconds or less it builds up a gas and explodes with enough force to remove some of yourextremities. The liquid that comes out is boiling hot as well.
eyes, etc. People are finding these "bombs" in mailboxes and in their yards, just waiting for youto pick it up intending to put it in the trash. But, you'll never make it!!! It takes about 30 secondsto blow after you move the thing.
See "SNOPES" below -- it's true -- the video at SNOPES shows the Indiana State Police Bomb
Squad detonating one -- it's truly horrifying! .... .. I checked "Truth or Fiction" and "they" agreethis is TRUTH!!! So be warned and beware.http://www.snopes.com/crime/warnings/bottlebomb.asp
WHAT WILL THESE KIDS THINK OF NEXT?!?!?!
Had a phone call from Dee Ann (Ott) Herde. She and her husband, Ed, are insouthern Texas at the Mexico border with all the other snow birds. She said they
are both fine health-wise and having a wonderful time. They have their cell phones andcomputer with them in their motorhome, so she is still able to receive the newsletter andstay in touch with home. It will be cutting it close, but she thinks (and HOPES) they will beback in L.S. in time to attend some of our April festivities. Well be looking for you, Dee
Ann!
In a phone call from Ted Atkins on March 7th, he reported that his computer is shutdown temporarily and looks like its going to be a lengthy fix. He asks that everyone please
hold all emails until after March 22nd. No health update, but he did sound strong andhealthy over the phone, just like his ol self. Will let you know when his computer is back
in business!
Compliments of Bill Turner ~
