What

• Use HD (1920x1080, 60 fields (half frames) per second) to capture, store and distribute high quality video material for scientific and educational purposes – streaming

• Use of HD to support high quality videoconferences

• Research at multipoint high bandwidth stream distribution using overlay user controllable networks

iGrid2005 Demo Setup

• HD Multipoint Videoconference (CZ101)• Three participating sites:

– Masaryk University Brno, Czech Republic– Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana– UCSD, San Diego

How (Video)

• Capture– HD camera SONY HVR-Z1E or HDR-FX1– AJA HD10A for analog (YUV) to SDI and DVS Centaurus for

hw capture of HD-SDI– Encapsulation into IP using custom UltraGrid-based

software, Chelsio 10Gb NICs (jumbo frames)– No compression, data stream of 1.5Gbps

• Projection:– Decapsulation (including 10b to 8b color reduction, AMD64

optimized deinterlace implementation)

Video Configuration and Network

Page 6: High Definition Video Real Time Multipoint Distribution

September 28, 2005 iGrid2005, San Diego, CA

How (Network)

• Virtual overlay network– Stream replication point(s) with software or

hardware replication unit

• User controllable packet reflector– 10 GE NIC from Chelsio– Dual AMD64 machine with 4GB RAM (BSD clone)– Only duplication of the 1.5 Gbps stream

• Optical splitter considered– Access to the L1 needed

Reflector Setup

Why

• HD provides good compromise between sufficient details in the picture and the price of necessary equipment (cameras and projection/display systems)– Videoconferencing– Interest by physicians for educational purposes

• Surgery capture

– Streaming access to lectures and other edu material

• High bandwidth to create challenge for network development

Problems

• Instability of dual AMD Opteron machines with 10GE Chelsio cards (T110/T210)

• No full control over the newtork– Unexpected glitches out of our control

• Still too high latency – still >500ms– Network gave 178ms between Brno and San

Diego compared to the theoretical 50ms– Even uncompress video processing adds at least

100ms (both sides)– Replication units
