Message from Executive Director

Message from Chair

For 2018-19 we continued to work towards our $6M capital campaign that will see the establishment of the High Park Visitor and Nature Centre as the gateway to enjoyable visitor experiences; a hub of park life. We are grateful to have such amazing partners supporting us in this campaign and all the work that we do each year.

To change things up a little we asked our staff to write their own little blurbs about what has happened in their portfolios, the highlights, and/or challenges/solutions. I suggested we do this because I think it is critical to focus on the strength of our staff. We have a diverse, passionate and talented group of staff that enable HPNC to succeed. Our staff tackle challenges with tenacity, they overcome barriers and road blocks and they creatively develop new programs to keep our community engaged in connecting with nature.

As the ED I can’t begin to express how critical our staff and volunteers are to our operations - but please trust me when I say: Our board, staff, volunteers, members, partners, supporters and donors continue to ensure that the HPNC endures despite challenges that come up. I am very grateful to them/you all - Thank you!

-Sara StreetExecutive Director

This year boasts a variety of programs that I believe surpasses any other year in the High Park Nature Centre’s history.

With our 14,000 visitors yearly, our incredibly talented staff continue to expand our program offerings with creativity and dedication this past year. I am continually amazed at the ways our staff think of delivering our programs and the range of ways we can explore the world through nature.

If you don’t follow us on Facebook, it’s a great place to get connected with the history of the park to see historical photos of the park through the years. Our staff are working more extensively this year with Indigenous groups to provide a space for the Indigenous Community to come together and open a window for the High Park community into Indigenous culture and connections to the land.

We have programs for urban naturalists of all ages including Nature Babies, Waddlers, Chipmunks, Raccoons, Coyotes and Rangers. We had a dance party. We had talks about bugs, bees, birds, and bats. We held a workshop on using nature to help in the care of elders. We had a Metis story-telling session. It is with great pride in the thoughtfulness of our staff and volunteers that we reflect on this year.

As a Board, we continue to work with staff on a renewed Strategic Plan. Additionally, we continue to work with a shifting political landscape to determine how our partnerships can most effectively support our programs and facility. We look forward to 2019-2020 and thank all of the people who dedicate themselves to the park that we steward for future genera-tions.

Finally, I would like to thank our Executive Director, Sara Street, who has led the Nature Centre this year with her continued integrity, energy and thoughtfulness.

Programs Summary & School Programs

School ProgramsWe had a total of 6,573 students visit the Nature Centre for a School program! Of those students 499 of them attended a sponsored field trip, with the support of our generous funders: the Halsall Foundation, Pratt & Whitney, and the Helen McCrea Peacock Foundation. All school programs are now incorporating an age-appropriate land acknowledgement of our presence on Indigenous land. We debuted three programs specifically for Preschool groups, Amazing Autumn, Under and Over the Snow, and Sensational Spring, they all received resounding positive feedback from teachers. Marvellous Mud, a new soil program incorporating extensive hands on activities was a crowd favorite among teachers and students. We worked with Naturalist Teacher Tina Soldovieri to develop her amazing, “I Live in a Watershed” program, coming soon as a school program for grades 5-8 in 2019-2020!

-Clarissa Cremin-EndesSchool Programs Coordinator (interim)

Programs SummaryOur programs continue to connect people with their local ecology through building awareness, understanding and respect. The need for this reconnection is more important now than ever. We were able to connect with more people through growing certain key programming areas and overall we reached 3% more people than 2017/2018. Perhaps more important than the numbers has been our commitment to work toward equitable access to nature and nature programming. We are so thankful to our funders and partners who have helped ensure that the nature connection is for everyone. In 2018-2019, more classes participated in free field trips than ever before. Likewise, more kids were able to attend summer camp without the barrier of cost, and more community groups were invited to take part in stewarding High Park’s black oak savannahs. Another priority throughout 2018-2019 has been beginning to decolonize our programs by moving beyond our land acknowledgment and building relationships with Indigenous groups to inform our new program development.

Nature Clubs & Camp ProgramsNature Clubs for Kids & Adults

Our nature clubs participants have the opportunity to experience High Park changing in each season, connecting with nature through sensory activities, games, songs, and stewardship. This year our kids’ clubs engaged 1,183 young naturalists (6 months-12 years); we added more early years sessions and expanded our French club age range to keep up with demand! The High Park Rangers (ages 12-16) continued to be offered at no cost, supported by the Rotary Club of Parkdale-High Park. We filled 81 spots throughout the school year, with the groups putting in over 1,500 hours toward stewardship efforts (including planting, Phragmites spading, and leading Family Nature Walks). We had 67 kids-at-heart join us for Urban Naturalists, our adult club. The adults formed an inclusive community of nature enthusiasts who sharpened their nature skills and contributed to buckthorn management!

Summer CampSummer Camp was a blast! We increased our camp spots to 502 for 2018 (up from 479 in 2017), but registration still filled VERY quickly. After summer camp, we made plans to increase camp spots for 2019 Summer Camp, as well as developed our Happy Camper Fund Bursary to increase accessibility of camp. Special thanks again this year to Canada Summer Jobs and United Nations Association of Canada who supported the hiring of summer staff who helped us deliver nine weeks of nature study and outdoor exploration for children and youth.

Nature Day CampsWe ran PA Day Camps, March Break Day Camp and a Winter Holiday Camp again this year. In these camps, we had 295 children enrolled. This year we expanded our Happy Camper Fund by fully funding some spots in March Break Camp and Winter Holiday Camp for kids from local organizations like Romero House and Kids Up Front. Thanks to all of our donors!

“My daughter loves everything about the program: the staff,

the crafts, the outdoor expeditions and activities. Like when they went snowshoeing this winter, or when they roast

apples!”

Programs for Adults & SeniorsWe offered a wide variety of workshops for adults and seniors this year, engaging 181 enthusiastic participants in immersive and experiential learning. Topics covered in these 16 workshops ranged from dragonfly and damselfly ID, to bird photography, to nature journaling! Our adult learning community also included 15 lively registrants in our monthly Nature Book Club. There were also 12 guided walk programs which invited over 150 new adult learners to dive into an exploration of High Park’s unique Ecology. We also partnered with City of Toronto to run a Wild Bee Club and Wild Bee Buzz Talk series.

Community ProgramsBirthday Parties

Together with families from across the Greater Toronto Area, we celebrated 79 birthdays at the Nature Centre, hosting 1360 guests! Our party programs are designed to get kids outside and physically engaged with nature through conversation, questioning, games, songs, hikes, and nature-art. Friends and family then head back to our cosy cottage to celebrate in their own way through a food celebration.

Family Nature Walks

This year we delivered 23 Family Nature Walks, engaging 720 participants in community building and making connections to High Park ecology. Memorable themes this year were “Time Travelling in High Park”, to exploring “Furry Things”, and the youth-led “Know Your Nature” walk curated by the HPNC Rangers.

-Jessie CoweCommunity Programs Coordinator

“This was the best birthday party I’ve had for my kids EVER

The staff were professional and great with the kids. The fact that

no disposable items could be used was so fantastic and im-

portant to us! And the cottage feels like a comfortable home.”

Special EventsSpecial events are opportunities to raise funds, build partnerships as well as opportunities to bring new people to the centre. This year 1130 people attended one of our 28 special events. We had three significant additions to the special event portfolio this year: Indigenous Family Nature Walks, Earth Hour and our Wintergration events. Thanks to the High Park Western Beaches Fund and Taiaiako’n Historical Preservation Society, we were able to pilot four Indigenous Family Nature Walks. Our new annual Earth Hour Event combined candle and lantern making with a hike. Lastly, we were able to use the delivery of two winter events to deepen and form new partnerships with the Together Project and CultureLink. Of the 49 newcomers who attended, 41 of them had never been to the Nature Centre. We have hopes to continue the positive momentum of all of these new special events as well as introducing new events like Winter Day Celebrations with snowshoe nature walks, quincee building (snow shelters), and a campfire in OURSpace. Of course we continued to offer favourites such as Decorate a Tree for the Birds, Halloween Howls (including adults for the first time!), Dawn Chorus Walk and the summer Bat Walk series among others.

-Jenny DavisEvents & Volunteer Coordinator “I learned so much and it

really was community coming together, especially in such a beautiful atmosphere. I was

taken away, and forgot at times that I was in the city.”

-Indigenous Family Nature Walk participant

Page 9: High Park Initiatives

Volunteers & InternsThis year 154 volunteers and 5 interns contributed a total of 3212 hours to all aspects of HPNC programming (school programs, clubs, camps, special events,OURSpace and administrative tasks). During this season we added two new volunteer engagement initiatives. First, interns can choose to work on a special project in addition to supporting our programming. Special projects are self guided and give interns the opportunity to create and strive towards professional learning goals while also growing opportunities for the High Park Nature Centre. Our new annual Earth Hour Event is just one example of how both parties mutually benefit. Second, for the first time, the volunteer program offered free naturalist skills training for our volunteers. “A Winter Tree ID” workshop was led for volunteers by one of our volunteers. The 15 volunteers who attended expressed how the workshop made them feel valued.

CommunicationsThe High Park Nature Centre’s multiple social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter) and Newsletter provide followers and subscribers with the opportunity to stay informed about the programs being offered, as well as virtually connect with the park’s ecology and some of its history. This year, we have seen an overall increase of 127% in Instagram followers, 15% in Twitter followers, 18% in Facebook page likes, and 10% in E-Newsletter subscribers.

We hope to continue growing our online following in the coming year and look forward to having more people engaging with the content that we are putting out.
