Cantor Jessica Roskin
As many of you know, both our interim, Rabbi Kohn and our associate, Rabbi Haas will be leaving us as of June 30. And although the search Committee worked tirelessly, we were unable to hire a Senior rabbi for the coming year. That means we are going with a new plan! July 1, 2018 through June 30, 2019 will be Temple Emanu-El's Year of Engagement. Congregational volunteers will be needed throughout the year to lead services by my side. I will need your help for the entire months of July and August, but from September through May, we will have a student rabbi twice a month. We look forward to welcoming Student Rabbi Leah Nussbaum in September! You will soon receive an email with opportunities to sign up. Our new “Worship Team” (a.k.a, the Ritual Committee), chaired by Barbara & Jack Aland, has helped break up our needs into small tasks. Please consider helping with at least one service during the year. The varied opportunities are below. Service Leader (English only) Hebrew Prayer reader (past B’nei Mitzvah, I’m looking at you, here!) Person who delivers the Sermon (Friday night) or the D'var Torah (Saturday morning) Someone to kindle the Sabbath lights (Friday night) Someone to say Kiddush (Friday night) Lifting the Torah (Saturday morning) Dressing the Torah (Saturday morning) As you can see, there is something for everyone! And, don’t worry about not knowing what to do - training materials will be developed for each job and I am happy to meet with anyone during the week to go over their part. We plan to involve our post Bar/Bat Mitzvah students, and individuals can sign up for one or more things or a family or group of friends can sign up together for the entire service. Be creative in thinking about how you wish to take part. We think this is going to be a great experience for our congregation. Please be on the lookout for a sign-up email in the coming weeks. I am so looking forward to sharing these opportunities with you!

Pathways
The mission of Pathways is to end homelessness for women and children through hospitality, housing and hope. They offer a range of transitional and long-term services for homeless women and children. Through its downtown Day Center, the agency provides food, clothing, showers, laundry facilities and case management. Pathways operates a rapid rehousing program for women with children. The agency’s Safe Haven program provides permanent, supportive housing for chronically homeless women with a mental illness. This program is the only one of its kind for women in Alabama.
Over the years, it has become obvious that families need more than shelter to escape homelessness. Pathways also provides a program called Invest in You which merges key elements of the former Employment Readiness and Fiscally Fit programs while meeting the needs of our ever-changing population.
With this continuum of services, Pathways provides housing and supportive services for 1,200-1,500 women and children annually.

Abby Cohn May 5
Daughter of Tracy & Al Cohn of Birmingham, AL.
Abby Cohn will be called to the Torah on Saturday, May 5th. Abby shares the simcha with her two sisters, Morgan & Lexi. She is excited to convey her love of Juadism and Hebrew with her large extended family, her supportive Temple family and peers, along with her close friends from Camp Judaea, Mountain Brook Junior High, and Red Mountain Theater Company’s conservatory. As a mitzvah project, she is partnering with her beloved summer camp to raise funds for a memorial cabin to be built in loving memory of her late cousin, David Rosenberg. Abby and her family feel blessed to be a part of Temple Emanu-El and look forward to sharing this meaningful day with loved ones near and far. A kiddish luncheon, sponsored by Abby's kvelling grandparents, Bonnie & Leslie Cohn, will follow the service.

Jewish life is experienced around the globe in expected and unexpected venues. Throughout the years and his vast travels, Rabbi Kohn has sought fascinating stories and important studies from the four corners of the world where Jews have lived. In this adult learning series, Rabbi Kohn will use images and interviews to raise three questions germane to unique times and places in Jewish life:
• What is the nexus of rescuer and survivor in the Holocaust, especially at the hands of the Japanese?
• What can we learn about belonging and diaspora – essentially, exile – through the medium of art, after our expulsion from Spain?
• How do we understand the unique and improbable history of the oldest American synagogue, in St. Thomas, and what can it teach us about our continuity?
Each presentation will include PowerPoint and/or video/movie presentations and will raise fascinating new ideas about global Jewish life. Kindly RSVP your interest in attending by emailing or calling Anita Winslett at [email protected] or 933-8037 ext. 230.

Special thanks to the Honan Family Torah Study Fund of the Grafman Endowment Fund for providing the opportunity to view this extraordinary movie presentation.
SAND on the FLOOR uses the history of the oldest Synagogue under the US flag to take the you deep inside the Jewish heart and Jewish mind. Historians, rabbis and congregants take us from the Congregation's Spanish Inquisition roots to its uncertain future. The film gives us an intimate look at Jewish life, shedding light on its traditions and mysteries. And in the process, pries at the cracks dividing the Jewish world today. The epilogue documents the role this Congregation and its historic Synagogue played in the filmmakers’ journey back to Judaism, 49-years after being targeted by a Jewish pedophile.

8 Youth & Education
sTudenT Rabbi Leah nussbauM is finishing her second year of rabbinical school at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in New York. She's an educator at Brooklyn Heights Synagogue, where she loves teaching fourth graders about Jewish identity, lifecycle events, and how Reform Judaism is constantly evolving and growing. When she spent her first year of rabbinical school in Jerusalem, she enjoyed meeting Israelis with a wide range of backgrounds and perspectives, and volunteering at the Hillel Project, an organization that supports people who are leaving the ultra-Orthodox community. Prior to her studies at HUC-JIR, she was a 2015-2016 Education Justice Fellow at Repair the World: Philadelphia. In 2015, she staffed Jewish Teens in Action Globally, a summer leadership program for Americans and Israeli teens. She completed her undergraduate degree in Policy Studies and Education, with a focus in Disability Studies at Syracuse University. At Syracuse she was active in Hillel, the interfaith community, the disability community, and also spent a semester at Tel Aviv University. Throughout these experiences and through her life, she enjoys connecting people to their Jewish identity and community through prayer, culture, music, service work, learning, and leadership. She enjoys nature, hiking, and taking her bike for long-distance rides, especially when the weather is nice. She is very much looking forward to being the Student Rabbi at Temple Emanu-El!

On Wednesday April 11th our teens invited their parents, grandparents and siblings to be part of a very moving and powerful finale to our Life Stories program at Brookdale. The teens presented scrapbooks that documented thee experience they shared with their senior friends and shared meaningful words about the
impact this year had on their lives. The seniors also shared how important this program was and how incredibly blessed they felt to have been part of building these long lasting relationships. Tears, laughter, and powerful
words were shared by all! Over the course of the year I had the privilege of watching this relationships flourish and it was a joy to hear the laughter shared, the moving stories, and the natural friendships bloom. Here are
some of the words shared by our teens, their parents and our Brookdale friends.
A Message from Rabbi Laila Haas
L’dor Vador: From Generation to Generation
“It was a real mitzvah and blessing to have these amazing kids fawn all over us and be part of our lives. This program was the most significant thing to have been done in Birmingham.” – Margie Rosenbaum (Resident of Brookdale)
“Really amazing night! So proud of these kids and thank you for an amazing meaningful experience for our teens this year!!!" – Heather Lebensberger (Mother of Rachel Lebensberger, member of our teen program)
“This was such a meaningful experience for me. I learned so much about an older generation. I loved this experience soooooooo much!" – Rachel Lebensberger (participant of our teen program)
“This year was meaningful for me because I got to hear someone else’s story but we also got to become part of each other’s story. I also formed lasting connections with many people and I’m so thankful for that!” – Brooke Smith (participant of our teen program)
“Every time I would pick up the girls after Life Stories, they would tell me all about their evening, they had a ball!” – Donna Askenazi (mother of Sareena Askenazi)
“Margie is coming to my Bat Mitzvah!” – Abby Cohn (participant in our teen program)
“This was a moving year. I learned all about Fred’s life and he learned about mine. Growing up I never knew either of my grandfathers, after the powerful experience of this year, Fred has become that grandfather figure to me, and I am so grateful.” – Caroline Gill (participant in our teen program)
“This was a living example of L’dor Vador, from generation to generation.” – Marilynn Rothstein (grandparent of Rayna Mastin, part of our teen program)

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and with thousands of congregations across the nation, Temple Emanu-El is participating in an effort to raise awareness, build community,
and diminish myths and stigmas associated with mental illness.
Initiated by the Office of the Mayor of New York City, The Weekend of Faith/Mental Health Awareness Shabbat has spread across America, especially at a time when persons
experiencing mental illness have been misunderstood and castigated. Instead, our Shabbat hopes to bring us together in understanding and recognition.

If you have not yet seen it, “Our Legacy Stories” is a beautiful online album of heartwarming stories highlighting
many of our Temple Emanu-El congregational families who have designated a legacy gift to
help ensure a vibrant future for Temple. A good number these stories have previously
been featured in our Endowment Fund Annual Reports, illustrating these congregants’ meaningful connection to Temple Emanu-El.
These stories are now being shared in a number of additional formats as we are
posting the collection both on the interactive recognition wall outside the
sanctuary, as well as on our Temple’s website (www.ourtemple.org/legacy-stories).
Stay tuned as we will continue to add more stories regularly…this is just a start!
