Engineering Student of the Year

Congratulations to Students

Highbury alumni held Open Studio

Highbury College alumni, Clare Bowen, held her largest Open Studio event in June at her own art studio in Surrey.

The Open Studio show took place at Gorse Cottages, Surrey, on the 6th-21st June.

Clare achieved her degree in Fine Art and Illustration from Portsmouth University and then obtained a Level 3 Adult Enterprise qualification, taught by Wendy Funnell, at Highbury College. She then turned on to her passion into a career by opening her own art studio.

Clare grew up on Hayling Island, Hampshire which cemented her love for beautiful seascapes from a young age. She moved to Southsea, where she studied the shoreline of the Solent overlooking the Isle of Wight. She observed the tide changes, light on the water, skies, and the sunrise & sunset colours which only grew her love for colours and painting.

You can visit her website here.

Siemens apprentice Scott Padley has been named as Engineering Student of the Year at Highbury College.

The 23-year–old beat competition from around 90 other students to pick up the coveted Institute of Engineering and Technology Shield together with a cheque for £100.

They were presented to him at Highbury Campus by IET Solent retiring chairman Mike Wohlgemuth, who was accompanied by ex-chairman John Harvey.

Scott, a Rail Systems Rolling Stock Technician based at Southampton, has recently completed his BTEC Level 3 in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. The course was condensed into one year full-time, rather than 2 years of 2 days a week. “It’s been brilliant,” he said. “I’ve had some great support and guidance from the lecturers here and from Siemens, which has been quite invaluable to me personally, and I’ve learned a great amount. My bosses are really pleased.”

Engineering lecturer David Christian said “Scott has demonstrated strong abilities across the disciplines and was the best overall student in his year”.
