Integrating technologyStudent learning will be further enhanced in 2014 as each student from Years 4-10 will be required to have their own iPad or iPad mini, truly enabling learning to be ‘anytime, anywhere’ and connect them with resources beyond the classroom walls.

iPads will allow students to personalise their learning and support their individual educational needs, encouraging their development as independent and self-directed learners, prepared and able to navigate the world of their future.

We have already introduced to Primary students the benefits of working with iPads and will continue to provide shared class sets for our early learning centre and junior primary students. Through iPad use, all students will continue to improve their ICT competency, an essential skill as underscored by the Australian Curriculum and the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme and Primary Years Programme.

City CiteThe Year 9 City Cite program is always a highlight. In small groups, students spend a week exploring Melbourne and completing a research project that compels them to interact with various groups in the city. They also visit key sites, opening their eyes to the rich diversity of Melbourne’s culture and heritage.

Highest Ulpan participationThis year sees the highest ever participation rate in our optional Year 10 Ulpan programs, with almost 90% of the year level taking part.

Thirteen students departed in early November on the new nine week program to spend four weeks based in Jerusalem, attending Hebrew language classes, taking part in activities at two local high schools and volunteering at Haddasah Hospital. Students also spent time with host families from the two schools and attended youth movement activities with their Israeli peers.

In early December they were joined by their 87 classmates on the five week program to explore Israel from north to south, visiting the Galilee and Golan Heights regions, Tzfat, Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Eilat and everything in between. The group also spent time volunteering in Israel and made a three day visit to Prague to gain an insight into the once thriving Jewish communities of Eastern Europe.

We wish all our Ulpaniks an enriching and memorable time in Eretz Israel.

From the PrincipalFirst there were computer rooms allowing students to interact with technology for occasional lessons. Then we installed electronic whiteboards throughout the College, bringing technology and the resources of the internet into each classroom and each lesson. And next year, each Scopus student from Year 4 and beyond will have the power of ICT in their own hands, with their own individual iPad. This does not mean that we will be an ‘iPad school’. We will be a ‘school’, but one where iPads will be one amongst many tools used to facilitate and enhance learning. This device will enable students to take notes and record, to read and research, to share and collaborate, to create and compose. It will also help them to perfect the skills of using technology to its fullest extent that will be so vital in the 21st century. This development is the result of pilot programs, visits to other schools, and the studying of extensive educational research. Teachers are preparing to incorporate the use of iPads into lessons where appropriate; the wireless network is expanded to accommodate new devices. We are ready for the start of the next stage of our technological journey, and whereas some parts of the road map are clear, the power of personalised computing may take us to destinations currently beyond even our imagination.

Rabbi James Kennard

Social justice Year 6 students took part in a full day social justice conference as an introduction to their exhibition unit, which is the culmination of their learning in the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme. The central idea behind the conference was ‘developing awareness and understanding of inequity empowers us to act’ and aimed to expose students to issues relating to inequity and to provoke thinking on a range of related topics. Speakers included David Perrin from the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, Olivia Greenwell from Water Aid, Pam Ahern from Animal Rescue and Bianca Orsini from the Salvation Army, along with Louisa Gibson from Access and Lyrian Fleming from Care Australia, together with a host of others. In between sessions, students met in groups to consider their learning and in turn further develop their own convictions about what is right, what is wrong, and what needs to change.

Following the conference, students decided on their own personal inquiries to be pursued in depth over the term.

They celebrated their learning at an exhibition in December.

Prime Minister honours Scopus Foundation

The College was delighted that Prime Minister Tony Abbott MP honoured the Mount Scopus Foundation at a celebration dinner hosted by Solomon and Rosie Lew.

Acknowledging the dinner as a celebration of faith, education and philanthropy, Prime Minister Abbott paid tribute to Israel, to Scopus and to Judaism and committed the new Australian Government to stand by the State of Israel.

He also outlined his views on education and stated, “I commit the new Government to stand by freedom of choice in schooling” and went on to praise the generosity of spirit that enables Scopus to continue to be the wonderful school it is.

As Foundation Chairman Solomon Lew announced he was stepping down after 26 years, both Henry Lanzer, Foundation President and the Prime Minister praised his leadership since the Foundation’s establishment, which has seen $46 million raised through the generosity of its supporters. Henry Lanzer also announced that in appreciation of Solomon Lew’s immense contribution, the College leadership has agreed that the Secondary School will be dedicated in honour of the Lew family.

For more information please see the 2013 Foundation Annual Report enclosed with this Kaleidoscope.

Year 6 Achrayim programSmorgon Family Primary School Year 6 students will have the opportunity to take part in a new student leadership initiative next year.

Replacing the former captains system, the Achrayim program is based on students showing responsibility in all facets of school life. As well as encouraging them to take action at school, there will be opportunities to take their experiences into the wider community. Year 10 Madrichim will also be involved, sharing their experience and acting as role models. Students will go through a nomination process to be involved in the program and over the course of the year will explore what it means to be responsible and to show leadership. Participants will also be part of the decision making processes that directly affect fellow students and all those involved will become part of one of the school portfolios; Social Action, Sport, Jewish Life, Environment and School Spirit.

Coming TogetherSince the opening of our Community Garden at Gandel Besen House in 2011, students have formed an ongoing relationship with the young adults from Access (an independent organisation helping people with disability achieve their life goals). Working side by side they have planted, watered and fertilized the crops and just before Rosh Hashana joined together to make apple and honey pancakes using eggs from the school chickens.

Along the way our students have deepened their understanding of people with different abilities and needs and the young adults from Access have enjoyed making a meaningful contribution and sharing in the growth and success of this wonderful community garden.

Extended Investigation

Mount Scopus College was one of 11 Victorian secondary schools to pilot a new VCE subject in 2013. The Extended Investigation is a university-style unit, whereby students develop a research question, conduct their own investigations and write a 4000 word paper, as well as give a 20 minute oral presentation.

Two Year 11 students, Joshua Meyerov and Byron Robertson, chose to trial the subject as it allowed them to investigate a topic of their choice and something they had always been interested in.

Joshua’s research topic, ‘Can the concept of creation and evolution be taught side by side’ allowed him to incorporate his extensive Jewish studies background, while Byron, who runs his own small online business investigated ‘What is the relationship between social media and small business’.

Both worked with VCE Co-ordinator and teacher, Sandra Katz, to refine their research question, learn about research methodology and ethics and write a research proposal, before beginning their projects.

The end result was a university quality thesis, complete with footnotes and bibliography, as well as skills they can take into their future studies and careers. The Extended Investigation will be offered as a Unit 3/4 study in 2014.

Japanese visitors

In Term 3 we welcomed 20 Japanese students as part of a language and cultural exchange. The students, from three schools in the Hokkaido region of Japan, were billeted with Scopus students who are learning Japanese at school.

During their five day stay the students attended classes and enjoyed visiting the Melbourne Zoo and Koorie Heritage Trust. They also provided us with a taste of Japan, including a lunchtime karate workshop led by one of the Japanese students who held a black belt.

In addition to improving their English and in turn helping Scopus students polish up on their Japanese conversation skills, our visitors gained a greater understanding of Judaism with many experiencing a traditional Shabbat with their host family.

Mount Scopus is the only Jewish secondary school in Australia teaching Japanese and this was the 15th visit by Japanese students.

Welcoming our Japanese visitors to Scopus

Vive la France

A group of students will spend three weeks immersed in French culture as they connect with the Jewish community in Paris and experience the highlights of French culture and history.

The students, from Years 8 to 11 will spend a week billeted with families from Groupe Scolaire Rachi in Paris – a Jewish school for boys and girls from Prep to Year 12, and will attend school with their hosts. They will then visit Versailles, and the towns of Lyon, Nice and Marseille, taking in both the Jewish history and cultural aspects of these magnificent cities.

The aim of the trip is to not only help students improve their French, but to broaden their knowledge and appreciation of other cultures, and hopefully strengthen the ties between the Melbourne and Paris Jewish communities.

Lehitraot At the end of every school year we say farewell to staff who are leaving, some of whom have been at the College for many years.

As Head of Fink Karp Ivany Campus, Karen Friede leaves to take on another senior educational post, we thank her for all she has done for our College and our children over a remarkable 32 years of excellent and dedicated teaching, including 11 as Head of FKI.

We also say thank you and goodbye to Jennifer Wright, Head of Primary Student Services and previously Head Teacher at our Kew Campus who retires after 40 years of incredible service to the College, Sue Hampel, an outstanding Jewish Studies teacher after 34 years, Neil Coverdale, a dedicated teacher at Smorgon Family Primary School for 30 years, Judith Rapke, Secondary English teacher, initiator of the Year 10 Foundation English program and previous Head of Year after 28 years, and Dorith Kranz, Hebrew Secretary for 20 years.

Grandparents and special friends

Students at Fink Karp Ivany Campus and Gandel Besen House welcomed their grandparents and special friends into their classrooms at the end of Term 3 to say thank you for everything they do for their children and grandchildren.

The Rosh Hashana themed mornings saw grandparents and special friends enjoy art and craft activities with their grandchildren, who each made special gifts for their grandparents to take home. The Challah covers, kippot and honey pots lovingly decorated by the children were much appreciated.

Sylvia Gelman Award

Congratulations to Matt Dufty, this year’s recipient of the Sylvia Gelman Award. In receiving this award, Matt was recognised for his exemplary contribution to the advancement of the programs of the International Baccalaureate Organization, and his contribution to teaching and learning at Mount Scopus College. As MYP (Middle Years Programme) Co-ordinator, Matt has supported and led staff through the continuing implementation of the MYP, and was particularly instrumental in preparing for our evaluation by the International Baccalaureate Organization earlier this year.

The award was presented by Mrs Sylvia Gelman AM MBE, whose almost 65 year involvement with the College, and her steadfast support and genuine care and concern for our educational initiatives and for our staff, has long been admired and deeply appreciated.

The annual Walk-2-Sports Day from Caulfield Park to the Gandel Campus in Burwood saw an impressive group of walkers and runners make the 11km trek in perfect weather. Convened by Lana Fleiszig, over 60 parents, friends and secondary students took part. Thanks to The Fruit Box for generously supporting this year’s Walk-2-Sports Day.

Despite the inclement weather, the Grant Thornton and Mount Scopus Corporate Golf Challenge saw golfers rise to the challenge and all had a great afternoon. Team Gross Waddell proved too good on the day and claimed victory. To our wonderfully supportive presenting sponsor Grant Thornton, to major sponsors Jagen and Pomeroy Pacific; and our sponsors Caprice, Silk Logistics, Highpoint Property Group, DLA Piper, Fitzroys, AON, Merricks Capital, Arnold Bloch Leibler, Gross Waddell, KPMG, GMK Partners, Driver Bus Lines, The Rimoptics Group, Platinum Constructions, Gary Peer and Kalus Kenny Intelex, your generous and ongoing commitment is greatly appreciated.

This event, which has now run for over 20 years, could not have been possible without the dedication and commitment of Mark Hansky who has been the Golf Challenge stweard since its inception. This year’s event will be Mark’s final one at the healm as he announced his ‘retirement’ from this post. We thank Mark for his amazing support of the College.

More than 350 guests attended the Scopus Breakfast and were entertained and informed by coveted

guest speaker Mia Freedman. The well-versed adage, ‘Can Women Really Have it All?’ was addressed and delightfully debated. A silent auction also featured and guests were treated to a wonderful online app enabling them to bid in the lead up and on the day.

Breakfast with Mia was presented by Seek and major sponsors Scott Winton Insurance Brokers, Ride On! Entertainment, Seed Heritage, Wingate Group, Roger David and Highpoint Property Group, and we sincerely thank all our wonderful supporters, including Roz and Carlo De Bortoli, Lisa Farber and Justin Liberman, Ann and Rodney Smorgon, Kate and Dean Mohr, Jen and Tony Smorgon, Lombards the Paper People, Tisher Liner and Monica and Geoffrey Kempler.

ReunionsOver 100 Old Collegians from the Class of 2003 gathered for their 10 year reunion, alongside former Principal, Hilton Rubin, form convenor Judith Rapke, and Sharon Stocker (who took the group on a tour of the campus) and Adina Akerstein (now Welsh). The group fondly remembered their classmate, Dr Robbie Piro who passed away a fortnight prior to the function. The reunion was a resounding success thanks to the efforts of organisers Nomi Blum, Jeremy Goldman, Michael Benjamin and Dean Hampel.

Simone Frey and Hayley Southwick spearheaded the committee to stage the Class of 1993, 20 year reunion. Over 80 Old Collegians reminisced alongside teachers in the old Secondary Hall and then toured the corridors of their bygone days with Greg Hannon. They also had the chance to see some of the more recent developments and learn about some amazing programs that many of their children either already or soon will enjoy.

Thirty years on, almost 90 former students from the Class of 1983 posed for their 30 year reunion photo on the Rose Hall stage. A Skype link up with Israel, a video with original lyrics by head organiser Alex Kain and an array of photos and documents sparked many memories. Revisiting Matron’s office, the Theatrette and the old Primary Hall produced chuckles before joining Mr Gerald Lever, their convenor, along with Mrs Gould and Mr Marks to enjoy the rest of the function. Thanks also to Mark Oved, Carolyn Jagoda and Steven Lipshut for their help in organising the reunion.

The 40 year reunion of the Class of 1973 included around 70 locals, visitors from Sydney and Israel, and virtual visitors from Perth, Israel and LA. Teachers Mr Fergus, Mrs Negler and Mr Barnard joined the group. The hardworking and hard-laughing committee of 14 people organised an afternoon full of memories and memorabilia for their classmates, including a tour of the College by Principal Rabbi Kennard. It seems the reunion was so successful that another is planned in five years time!

Over 50 Old Collegians joined teachers Mrs Gelman, Mr Rothman, Mrs Mazza, Mrs Rosenbaum, Mr Fergus and Ms De Jong to celebrate the 50 year reunion of the Class of 1963. The Skype guests in Israel and Moscow were able to communicate with each other as well as those in Melbourne. A moving speech and an audio-visual presentation honouring those who had passed on were delivered, with further reminiscences continuing over dinner. Congratulations to Carmella

Prideaux and the other nine hard working members of the organising committee.

Mount Scopus appreciates the generous donations made by this year’s reunion groups in memory of those classmates who have passed away, both to the College and to the Helen Synman Archives Project which coordinates the memorabilia used at the reunions.

For enquiries regarding Mount Scopus reunions in 2014 please contact Denise Kain on 9834 0073 or [email protected]

Scopus FlashbackThe Helen Synman Archive Project is a hub of memorabilia, artefacts and school history and is now a well equipped resource for the school community, general use and for research.

This year each of the reunion groups has utilised the Archives to recapture life on campus and to research old myths and legends related to their own Scopus experience. Discovery is done through old photos, school magazines, newspaper articles, documents and old uniforms, all now housed in extensive archive files, with over 10,000 catalogued and digitised items.

Our major drive for 2014 is for additional material and class photos from 1949-1964. This will support an exhibition of ‘early beginnings’ that will feature the St Kilda Road campus and the transition to Burwood to be shown later in the year.

If you have items, photos or even a few hours to volunteer, please call 9834 0087 or email Frankie Pinch at [email protected]

The College is grateful for the photographic services and ongoing support of Jeff Joseph of Cha Cha Cha Photography throughout 2013.

A number of the photos in Kaleidoscope have been taken and kindly donated by Jeff.
