Ins ide this issue:

Dear Friends -

In our January-

February Sunday worship we

are walking with Jesus

through the early days of his

public ministry. In the Gospel

of Mark, Jesus gathers

disciples and the group starts moving around Galilee. Jesus begins

his public work of teaching, healing, and casting out evil. Jesus

goes from place to place with a powerful new teaching: love more

than law. And crowds come to hear him and to be healed by him.

We, the people of the Highland Ave UMC are moving about in

the patterns of our daily lives and in our church’s ministries. We

reach out to one another and to our neighbors. Perhaps we might

consider how we are offering healing and hope in our neighbor-

hood. Are we teaching and learning, and offering the healing grace

of Christ?

The message of Jesus’ life affirms that God goes with us, to

every broken thing around us, and to every broken thing about us.

Every imperfect thing belongs to God, and God belongs…to every

riven thing. May this sense of belonging to God grow in each of us,

as we strengthen our bonds of faith and make our way through Lent

to Easter, so that in celebrating the resurrection of Christ we echo

the good news of God’s power over every form of death. May we

go from place to place and be part of God's life-giving work in

Jesus.

In the love of Christ -

Pastor Kathleen

Words of Appreciation

Advent and Christmas Thanks

A special word of thanks for the many people who helped to make the Advent and Christmas seasons at HAUMC a true reflection of God’s love.

to the Greenleaf family who helped arrange and care for our poinsettias and to Ralph Chaney who also helped care for them;

to Kay Ericson for allowing us to use the “Star of the East” once again this year;

to the Sunday School students, Aiden and Kristin Poisson, Connie Greenleaf and Susan Hynson for helping light the Advent Candles.

to Jaye Trimm and her family for once again organizing our Giving Tree ministry and to all who donated gifts so that several families could have a wonderful Christmas this year;

to Pat McKee, Susan Hynson, Ralph Cheney, the Greenleaf family and the Record family for taking part in the Christmas Eve service of worship;

to the choir members and music minister Ralph Cheney who provided inspiring music during the season;

to those who visited the prayer chapel

to those who read along in the Advent devotional, making our preparations for Jesus arrival more meaningful.

and to all those who worked behind the scenes to make the season special.

Yuletide Fair 2017

The United Methodist Women would like to thank all of you who baked, cooked, crafted, set up, priced, cleaned up, and decorated. The effort that goes into the luncheon, wreath decorating, White Elephant room and main room is amazing. A lot goes into having our fair and we greatly appreciate all of you for making it happen. Our fair was very successful and we made over $2,642.00. Again, thank you to all who helped make this event happen.

Sunday School News

Bev. Fernald LaPlante

Our students are back to lessons, learning and fun. We have plans for the second semester that should be fun and interesting. For February we will be

working on our card ministry by making Valentines for members of our church family. We are also planning a movie morning during which we watch a movie, eat snacks and have a fun time together.

In March we will hear the story of the Lenten

pretzels and make some surprise decorations for the sanctuary for Easter. We will also help with the activities on Palm Sunday.

During April we will celebrate the birthdays of

members of the congregation and also celebrate Earth Day. Mark your calendars and plan to participate in the fun on April 22!

During May we will be collecting decorations

for birthday cakes for the residents at Bread of Life Shelter. Our annual Children’s Day presentation is planned for June 10. Please try to attend our presentation and celebrate our year of Sunday School!

Our Sunday School has lots of activities, lessons and fun planned for the winter\spring. Any and all students are invited to join us and bring their friends! See you in church!

a form, contact Kay Gregory at 582-1452.

Lent

Lent is a season of repentance (turning around – away from wrongdoing and toward God.) It is the 40 days before Easter (not counting Sundays) which

starts on Ash Wednesday. Our worshipping community gathers a few extra

times in this season of preparation and then Holy Week (Palm Sunday Mar 25 – Easter Sunday April 1.) Mid-week services offer the opportunity to deepen our practice of worship and to align our-selves with God at a time we normally do other things. The services are somewhat different from Sunday worship, offering a meaningful time to par-ticipate in the traditions of the Christian church.

We will host the Randolph UMC for our service

on Feb 14 at 7 when we offer ashes as a sign to “remember you are dust and to dust you will return.” Lent is a season of “self-examination and repent-ance; by prayer, fasting and self-denial; and by read-ing and meditating on God’s Holy Word.”

Would you like someone to pray for you every day of Lent? Are you willing to pray for someone every day of Lent? This year the season of Lent runs from February 14 (Ash Wednesday) until March 31 (Easter) and we are looking for people to partner in prayer.

Prayer partners will commit to pray for each

other each other for the forty days of Lent, and connect with each other at least once a week to check in. The prayers can be as simple as speaking the persons name to God, or as long and detailed as you may like. The weekly connection could be by phone, a brief conversation at church, or lunch, or a visit to ask how they are, and whether there is anything in particular to pray for. If you are interested in being and having a prayer partner, please fill out a slip or just let Pastor Kathleen know.

“Every Riven Thing”

B Y C H R I S T I A N W I M A N

God goes, belonging to every riven thing he's

made sing his being simply by being the thing it is: stone and tree and sky, man who sees and sings and wonders why God goes. Belonging, to every riven thing he's

made, means a storm of peace. Think of the atoms inside the stone. Think of the man who sits alone trying to will himself into a stillness where God goes belonging. To every riven thing he's

made there is given one shade shaped exactly to the thing itself: under the tree a darker tree; under the man the only man to see God goes belonging to every riven thing. He's

made the things that bring him near, made the mind that makes him go. A part of what man knows, apart from what man knows, God goes belonging to every riven thing he's

made.

United Methodist Group Meetings

The United Methodist Women will meet March 7th at 6:30pm. (note change of date) The budget meeting will be February 18th after church.

The United Methodist Men’s breakfast will be February 17th at 8:00 am and will focus on “fellowship and brainstorming”. They will meet again March 24th and will help set up the tables for the Public Supper that evening. All are welcome!

Would You Like to be a Lay Reader?

Susan Hynson

The Worship Team decided to make some changes to assign-ment of Lay Reading on Sunday morning. I will be available to meet with folks to generate a roster of names for the reading.

We will have a brief orientation to these duties after church once this list is compiled. If you have an interest in participating in the service in this way, please touch base with me. We feel as if it is important to include anyone interested. HAUMC is fortunate to have a small faithful group already, we just want to expand the list. My phone # 582-7048.

Easter Breakfast

Volunteers are needed for this year’s Easter Sunrise Breakfast. Workers are needed to prepare the breakfast and another

group of workers would be needed to clean up afterwards. The breakfast menu has not been finalized yet. There may also be a need for muffins, depending on what the menu is. If you would like to help, please contact Phil Garwood (582-8301). Many thanks in advance for your help.

Officers of Our Church

Thank You, Thank You

Many thanks to those in our community of faith whose term of office expired at the end of 2017; we sincerely appreciate your ministry on behalf of Highland Avenue UMC and wish you God’s blessings for the year ahead.

Greg Batten, Administrative Council Sandy Hickey, Board of Trustees Phil Garwood, Board of Trustees Lynn Gerard, Staff/Parish Relations Committee Lindsay Greenleaf, Staff/Parish Relations Committee Cheryl Ramsay, Stewardship and Finance Committee Patsy Tessier, Committee on Lay Leadership

Welcome New Church Officers

Highland Avenue UMC wishes to express its appreciation to those persons who became part of our church leadership in this new year as well. Please keep in your prayers the ministry of the following persons who joined our church leadership in a new way in 2018:

Gene Anastasio, Administrative Council Chairperson Sandy Hickey, Administrative Council Rhonda Rush, Board of Trustees Phil Garwood, Board of Trustees Rich Nickless, Board of Trustees Patsy Tessier, Staff/Parish Relations Committee Terry Tatlock, Staff/Parish Relations Committee Becky Hicks, Staff/Parish Relations Committee Cheryl Ramsay, Stewardship and Finance Committee Susan Hynson, Committee on Lay Leadership Wendy Vigue, Worship Committee Susan Hynson, Worship Committee Susan Hynson, Co-Lay Leader

According to our Book of Discipline, committee membership is for a three-year cycle. This allows

volunteers to rotate off a committee and perhaps look to a new way to serve every three years. Changing committee membership allows us to share knowledge about how the teams together support all aspects of the church’s mission and offers the chance to strengthen relationships with additional people. The Nominations/Lay Leadership Committee appreciates the long-term committee members who have developed valuable experience in different areas of the church, and we are grateful for those who are willing to serve in new ways. We are hoping that with the spark of the Holy Spirit among new combinations of people, some creative solutions will emerge to address challenges we face in our church and community. Through intentional discernment, we hope to hear and move in the direction that God calls us. I’m glad we are on this journey together!

Congratulations!

Nonie Smith

I want to share some info about this special lady. She grew up in this church, was bap-tized, attended Sunday School, became a mem-ber at age 13. As a child and teenager she was active in many of the church activities. During the summer she would play the organ for a small church in West Gardiner. Nonie & Smitty were married here in 1956 and moved

away for many years. Wherever Nonie lived she be-came active in the life of her church. While in Wis-consin she taught Sunday School, helped with Vaca-tion Bible School, played the bells. She was a mem-ber of the women’s group and helped with their many functions. She and Smitty gave rides to church to a disabled couple and became family to an elderly church couple who’s family lived away.

In 2004 Nonie & Smitty returned to Maine and

became a part of our church family again. Nonie has become active in the life of her church here at HAUMC. She joined the UMW, Friendship Circle, craft group, and working on the Christmas fair. Her and Smitty have worked on many church suppers peeling veggies and serving in the dining room. While in Wisconsin she was part of the church funer-al reception committee. We are most thankful for her leadership organizing and chairing our funeral recep-tion committee for many years.

She is the mother of three children and four

grandchildren. For enjoyment she and Smitty are members of a square dancing group.

Mission Pin Recipients

On November 26th during worship, Kay Gregory, UMWomen’s president, presented mission pins to these two very worthy recipients. The following is what she said about them:

Nonie, we love you and thank you for all the ways you have shared God’s love throughout your life.

Jaye Trimm

This person grew up in this church attending Sunday School along with helping in many activities of the church growing up. She also joined in many school and community activities during her youth. She is the mother of a daughter and son and grandmother of two grandsons. She was very supportive of her children’s activities as they grew up and is still there for them. The grandsons bring her much love and enjoyment. Her community involvement includes Chrysalis Place volunteer, Host Home Coalition Committee, Board member of Oak Grove Cemetery.

Church activities include UMW, a starting

member of the Highlanders Circle 40ish years ago, trustee member, parsonage committee, finance & special finance committee, giving tree coordinator and thank you for coordinating that, community suppers, church fair and church supper kitchen worker.

Jaye, We thank

you for sharing God’s love through your talents and love with our church and community.

Do You Want to Lift Someone in Prayer?

If you have a name you would like added to our prayer list, please contact Vicki at 582-3584 or [email protected]. In addition to being added to our list, the name can be added to our Prayer Wall located in the hallway at the back of the sanctuary. Another method of prayer is our e-mail prayer chain. If you would like to have your name sent to the members of our prayer chain, please indicate that when you send your request. And please don’t forget to update us as conditions change. Prayer does matter!
