Mid Winter Advance 2019
at Keswick
Winter Snow Policy If there is snow overnight the evening before a planned morning church event from Monday through Saturday, due to snow removal factors beyond our control, the event will be cancelled. If there is no school or early dismissal for the Gloucester City School District, all afternoon and evening activities will be cancelled. We will make every possible effort to see that the lot and walks are cleared for Sunday School and Sunday morning worship. Sunday afternoon and evening activities will have weather cancellations at the discretion of their appointed leadership.
Dear Church Family and Friends, In our chapter-a-day devotional readings, you will notice that
during the last half of January 2019 and the majority of February,
we are in the Psalms. Now it might seem that the Psalms are
endless as readings – there are 150 psalms and Psalm 119 has 176 verses (8 verses for each
letter in the Hebrew Alphabet – incidentally, the letters are in alphabetical order). Most
scholarship contends the final ordering of the Psalms came after the Babylonian exile (after
539 BC) and in Hebrew are titled the Tehillim (Praises) though many are prayer-like in
nature. There are five books within the Psalms. The first book (Psalms 1 – 41) utilizes the
divine name Yahweh. The second book (Psalms 42 – 72) utilizes the word Elohim (a plural
of majesty of the singular El (universal name for God)). The third book (73 – 89) is divided
into three parts: Psalms 73 – 78 are psalms of instruction or wisdom psalms, Psalms 79 – 83
are urgent prayers for divine assistance in the deliverance from invading enemies, Psalms
83 – 89 are psalms that express a yearning for fellowship with the Lord, who dwells in His
temple in Zion, and from whom alone come security and blessing. This information can be
found in many study Bibles and, as the senior pastor, I am endorsing the NIV Study Bible
published by Zondervan. Our congregation gives this study Bible to our high school
graduates. It offers sound scholarship in its articles. The Psalms are relevant for the church
today, and many scholars view the church as the ongoing people of God – and the promises,
songs, and prayers contained within them continue as meaningful – enduring for all
generations of God’s chosen people. Under the new covenant, in this new era of redemption
that dawned with the first coming of the Messiah and that be consummated at His second
coming, we are to utilize these sacred songs and prayers as our enduring legacy of God’s
Word for God’s People for all times. May they bring blessing to your hearts and lives as you
enjoy them this month.
In the Word,
Pastor Bill

THE STORY . . . FINDING YOUR STORY IN GOD’S STORY You are invited to join together on a 31-week journey through the Bible! “THE STORY” is a book of selections from the Bible, arranged chronologically, that reads like a novel. During this unique 31-week experience, every member of the family will be able to read their own, age-level-appropriate version of “THE STORY.” Together we will journey from Genesis to Revelation. There will be a variety of small groups available for you to connect with. On Sunday mornings at 9:30 AM, adults will meet in the fellowship hall and children in grades 3-6 will experience “The Story” with Mrs. Kumpel. At 11:00 AM, the Sunday morning message and FAITH FACTORY lesson for grades K-6 will be aligned with the stories we are learning about in our small groups. Youth will meet on Sundays at 3:30 PM, ladies will meet on Tuesdays at 7:00 PM and men will meet on Tuesdays at 9:00 AM. There is also a group of men that will meet in the evening. Please refer to your calendar for specific nights. Across the church and out in the community we can talk about what we are learning together from God’s story! And perhaps along the way we will also see our story in God’s story. Please give the church a call at 456-3364 to sign up for one of these small groups. You are invited!!
