An Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meeting is held weekly on Wednesdays at 7:00pm in the Catalina II Room. This is a one-hour "Open" meeting, held each week, for the past four years. An AA "Open" meeting means that alcoholics, their spouses, relatives, friends, visitors and persons who want information about AA are all welcome.

The Highlands Neighbor to Neighbor lending program is availa-ble to assist all Highlands residents. It only takes an email to lend or borrow a piece of medical equipment or item for visiting grandchildren. Loaned equipment is available for a limit of 4 weeks. To borrow or loan equipment contact Judy Poffenberger at [email protected] or Ann Freeman at [email protected]. Please do not call us as we may be out of town but we can always receive and send email. This is a strictly neighbor to neighbor act of sharing. It is not a HHOA committee.

Partners in Planning for Long-Term Options is a service offered by PCOA. This is a decision-support process where individuals, family members and/or significant others can find assistance in planning for their long-term care needs. Partners in Planning provides a comprehensive approach including education and information through face-to-face consultation, resource materials about the options available, and a personalized plan to guide your decisions. There is a simple fee of $75.00 per person and $125 per couple. To schedule a Partners in Planning session, call the PCOA Help Line at 520-790-7262. PCOA Ambassadors for The Highlands, Mary Lou Hawkins (979-3264) and Ann Freeman (579-9858) are available for infor-mation about services available through Pima Council on Aging.

February is the month of valentines, flowers and chocolate. Some may need a little bit of extra sunshine in their lives as well. Please help so that no one is forgotten and missed. If you know of a Highlands resident that is having surgery, ill, suffering a loss in the family or simply needs a boost, send an email to Ann Freeman at [email protected] with the resident’s name and situation and a card will be sent from The Highlands HOA. Without your help someone may not receive that little boost that they really need.

Hopefully by now the worst of our winter is over and we are back in shorts and short sleeved shirts. The rains have certainly been plentiful and will make our golf course green and lush. The wildflowers will be abundant this spring, in all their gold, blue and yellow splendor. Take time to enjoy them. Our golf calendar for February is filled with a great selection of events. Tuesday, February 2, is the ever popular Mailbox Tournament and Luncheon. Afterwards we will hold a General Membership Meeting. Preston and Errol Quinn will also put on another rules seminar for the membership. Always a great learning experience for us golfers. February 9 is an ABCD game called Cupid's Choice. You can tell that this is a Valentine's theme, combining Hearts and Chocolates. What a great combo. I hope the chocolates are edible. February 16 is another ABCD game, this one called Pressure Cooker. You have to make some decisions here, whether to use just one net Best Ball or 2 on the previously played hole. Could be a little bit tricky. On the February 23, we will play another individual game, using the Stableford method of scoring. Wear your league colors this day. Hopefully everyone has a league shirt by this time. If not, speak with Dave Pena in the Pro Shop. He can place an order for you. Happy Valentine's Day to all, Sam Kell, President

With the January rain, many wildflowers are in bloom. Sig-nup for a hike with the Highland’s Hiking Club to see great vistas in the Tortolitas,

Catalinas, Madera Canyon and other locations. The club has changed our hiking year to end on December 31. As a result, the timing of some of our social events has changed. The annual Spring Picnic remains in March and is scheduled for St. Patrick’s Day, Thursday, March 17. We have reserved the Dove Mountain Park Pavilion, on Dove Mountain Boulevard. There will be hikes in the Tortolitas for all levels. The potluck picnic begins at 11:30am. Signup details will be in the March Highlander and March hiking schedule. Watch for information on a new Fall Kickoff social event to be scheduled in November. Finally, our next annual Hiking Dinner will be in January 2017. The club-house ballroom is reserved for Thursday, January 26, 2017. Each year we recognize the hiking milestones of our members. This year; 52 hikers earned the new Annual Mileage Award pin/button for 25+, 50+, 100+ or 200+ miles (see picture above), 21 hikers earned a 250 or 500 mileage rockers, we have 24 new members, and 228 hik-ers hiked 5,524 miles. Club members should check the Hiking Club website link “Club Member Hike Miles

and Awards 2015” to check their mileage and to see if they earned an award. Rockers and pin/buttons can be picked up at the HOA Clubhouse front desk. The winner of the January drawing for a $25 Highland’s gift card is… Marc Mason! Remember, all you have to do to be eligible for next month’s drawing is participate in at least one hike.
