The edition 2016 of the Atlantic Roots will be a renewed journey throughout the world, but above all through the Portuguese-speaking countries and the Atlantic Ocean thereby setting the tone for the festival’s own name.

As the starting point of this journey, we will begin in Madeira Island with Xarabanda, a band that features all the unique instruments that define the music from Madeira.

The next destination will be the Portuguese mainland, with one of the most important portuguese divas Lula Pena. An unique voice defines this artist that has at her sound basis in Fado but goes to other musical genres, she will present her new album.

In search of new sounds of the world we take our journey away from the Atlantic to meet another diva, but this time in such an exotic country like Tunisia, to meet Ghalia Benali, considered by the specialized press the ambassador of Arab culture.

We then go to the UK with the award winning Sons of Kemet, a band that makes its national première in this festival, they present a unique sounds where they mix both European, African or even Caribbean sounds.

We’ll then start our journey throw the Atlantic Ocean and stop in Cape Verde, with the warm voice of Elida Almeida. Winner of the prestigious award “Découvertes RFI” of France in 2015.

The next stopping point takes us to South Africa with the the eclectic sound of Petite Noir, one of the most international artists of that country. Noir features in his 2015 album a Modern Africa with pop and rock influences.

The end of this journey happens with the concert of one of the biggest names of the brazilian music, Ivan Lins. With over 40 years of career and many awards including four Grammys. A luxury closing for the 2016 edition of the Atlantic Roots Festival.

Chamber Music Week

The Associação Amigos do Conservatório de Música da Madeira, with the support of the Direção Regional da Cultura, presents from June 3 to 10 the Chamber Music Week, with five concerts to be held at Baltazar Dias Theatre, in Funchal.

The Chamber Music Week opens with the concert “Celebrating Musical Anniversaries” – paying a tribute to birth or death anniversaries of several composers, particularly W. S. Bennett, E. Satie, M. Reger, E. Granados and G. Cassadó. The second concert will be a Clarinet and Piano Recital, with two recognized and acclaimed Italian musicians. Here stand out several improvisations on popular Jewish songs.

A Saxophone Quartet Recital follows with a group formed by three teachers of Madeira Music Conservatoire/CEPAM and Elvis Sousa, a brilliant and former student of this institution, who recently won the 2nd prize in a major international competition in France.

Then, “A Tchaikovsky Night” dedicated to his great Trio (violin, cello, piano), plus a selection of his largely well-known composition “The Seasons”.

Lastly the concert, “Celebrating Camões Day” is also a musical portrayal of João Victor Costa, one of Region’s most outstanding composers, conductor and author of the music for Madeira’s Anthem. The audience will have the opportunity to listen to eight sonnets by Camões, composed by João Victor Costa, and to various world premieres: piano and clarinet compositions and piano solos.
