WELCOME TO A NEW AUTUMN SEASON AT THE ROYAL COLLEGE OF MUSIC

This autumn, we celebrate the unequalled tradition of composition at the RCM with RCM Composers Week. Works by RCM professors Mark-Anthony Turnage, Dai Fujikura, Simon Holt, William Mival and Jonathan Cole are featured in performances by the New Perspectives ensemble, our long-running From the Soundhouse series and a special lunchtime concert. You can also hear works from earlier generations, including Stanford, Tippett and Vaughan Williams, as well as from current students.

Our new orchestral series – Orchestral Masterworks – is launched in September. With the emphasis on the most important works of the repertoire, there are chances to hear Brahms’ Symphony no 1, Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony, Dukas’ The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and Tchaikovsky’s ever-popular Nutcracker Suite. We are also delighted to welcome the dynamic conductor Juraj Valcuha for Mahler’s final completed symphony, no 9, while the RCM Chorus and Symphony Orchestra visit the world of Italian opera in a programme of Rossini and Verdi, with Puccini’s youthful and exuberant Messa di Gloria.

We are pleased to welcome back English Touring Opera for a residency featuring three classics of the opera repertory – Pelléas et Mélisande, Werther, and The Tales of Hoffmann. A new partnership opens, too, as members of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe work alongside our students in a study and performance of Beethoven’s Symphony no 2.

There are masterclasses from John Lill, Sarah Connolly, Maxim Rysanov and Berlin Philharmonic Principal Horn Stefan Dohr; the ninth International Festival of Viols with guest Christophe Coin; and the RCM Big Band pays tribute to Eddie Harvey and Will Michael. Our Chamber Essentials series continues with classics by Haydn and Mozart, and, beyond the concert stage, we launch a new series of talks, Music and Ideas.

To complete the season, we present two unmissable events – a performance of William Walton’s Façade with Sir Thomas Allen and Sally Burgess, and Johann Strauss’ hilarious musical comedy, Die Fledermaus. We look forward to welcoming you. Stephen Johns | Artistic Director

Debussy found the perfect drama in Maurice Maeterlinck’s compelling play and the resulting marriage of music and drama is sensuous, mysterious and utterly captivating. Belgian composer Annelies Van Parys’ sensitive arrangement receives its UK premiere in this production featuring RCM alumna Susanna Hurrell as Mélisande.

Based on Goethe’s classic novel, Werther is a tragic story of forbidden love – and rarely in opera is its destructive power felt so close to the bone. The title role will be sung by emerging talent Ed Ballard in a special version for baritone prepared by Massenet. Carolyn Dobbin plays Charlotte, the object of his unrequited love, with RCM alumnus Simon Wallfisch as Albert.

From the master of French operetta, Offenbach’s work of genius, studded with famous melodies, is as dark a comedy as you can get. This new production by James Bonas matches the virtuoso talents of young tenor Sam Furness in the title role with RCM alumna Ilona Domnich as his three heroines and fellow RCM alumni Louise Mott and Tim Dawkins.

Be transported to Italy by the epic forces of the RCM Symphony Orchestra and Chorus as they celebrate the greats of Italian opera and choral music.

The highlight of the evening promises to be Puccini’s Messa di Gloria – the composer’s only mass, written when he was just 22 years old. Don’t miss the chance to hear this beautiful, operatically influenced work, featuring outstanding soloists from the RCM’s vocal department.

This concert also showcases the RCM’s superb orchestral performers in Rossini’s famous overture to William Tell, the passionate and playful music of Verdi’s Aida and the dreamlike Intermezzo from Puccini’s one-act opera Suor Angelica, before the orchestra is joined by the RCM Chorus for the uplifting prelude to one of Pietro Mascagni’s rarely-performed operas.

Juraj Valcuha has been Principal Conductor of the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI since 2009 and has conducted, amongst others, the Orchestre National de France, Philharmonia, Leipzig Gewandhaus and Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Tonight, he leads the RCM Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Mahler’s unforgettable Ninth Symphony – the last completed by the composer. The hymn-like final movement of this epic work has gone down in history as one of the most moving and atmospheric endings to any symphony, with an eerie stillness which many believe reflects Mahler’s awareness that he had not long to live.

Please note, there is a £1.95 booking fee per transaction for online and telephone bookings. This fee covers administration and handling costs, allowing ticket income to support training and performance opportunities for our students.

BOOKING FOR THE AUTUMN SEASON opens on Wednesday 19 August. RCM Friends and Patrons have priority booking from Wednesday 12 August.

BOOKING FOR RCM JUNIOR DEPARTMENT EVENTS opens on Saturday 17 October.

PLEASE NOTE: Tickets for J Strauss Die Fledermaus, 23, 25, 27 and 28 November, will be available from Wednesday 30 September. RCM Benefactors have priority booking from Wednesday 16 September and RCM Friends on Wednesday 23 September.

Group bookings of 10 or more receive a 10% discount where applicable. Maximum group booking size is 33. School parties must be chaperoned at all times by school staff.

Refunds Tickets cannot be exchanged or refunded unless a performance is cancelled; when an event is sold out refunds may be possible, at the discretion of Box Office staff.

Tickets on the door Tickets are available on the door for many RCM events. However, we recommend that tickets are purchased well in advance and cannot guarantee availability on the day.

Late Arrivals To avoid disturbing fellow audience members, latecomers will be asked to wait for a suitable break in the performance before entering the auditorium; occasionally it may not be possible to enter once a performance has started.

VISITING USTransportBy Tube The nearest underground station is South Kensington, which is about 10 minutes’ walk from the RCM. South Kensington is on the District, Circle and Piccadilly lines. Gloucester Road and High Street Kensington stations are both approximately 15 minutes’ walk from the RCM.

By Rail The nearest mainline railway stations are Paddington and Victoria.

By Bus Buses 9, 10, 52 and 452 pass the Royal Albert Hall, whilst 9a runs from Palace Gate and 70 along Queen’s Gate. The number 360 stops very close to the RCM on Prince Consort Road. Many other services run to South Kensington, Kensington High Street or Knightsbridge from surrounding areas.

By Road There is metered parking on Prince Consort Road and the surrounding area. It costs £3 per hour for a maximum of three hours and is free after 6.30pm and on Sundays. There are a limited number of disabled parking spaces and designated motorbike bays in the surrounding area.

Food and DrinkLunch and Snacks The RCM Restaurant offers a great range of hot and cold snacks and beverages each weekday between 9.00am and 4.00pm as well as delicious full lunch options between 12.00pm and 2.00pm.

Evening Performance Drinks and Light Snacks The RCM offers a range of pre-performance and interval refreshments, and a selection of light snacks for those attending evening events in the Amaryllis Fleming Concert Hall and the Britten Theatre. These are served between 6.00pm and 9.00pm (5.00pm for early evening performances) in the Britten Theatre Bar or the RCM Foyer Bar.

Photography and RecordingsPhotographs may be taken during the applause at the end of a work. Photography before and during a performance is forbidden. Private sound or video recordings of RCM concerts and recitals are prohibited without prior written permission from the RCM and the agreement of all performers.Your co-operation is appreciated.

AccessThe Royal College of Music has easy access to most areas and is fully accessible via lifts and ramps. Guide and companion dogs may be taken anywhere on site. The main entrance to the RCM has eight steps up from the pavement and two inside the main doors.

The East Entrance, 20 metres to the left of the main entrance, is solely for the use of patrons with limited mobility and is opened by contacting reception staff via intercom. The main entrance to the Amaryllis Fleming Concert Hall contains 10 steps. A step-free entrance is available.

The main entrance to the Britten Theatre contains 33 steps. An alternative step-free entrance is available for all patrons. There are spaces for wheelchair users and seats for their companions in the Amaryllis Fleming Concert Hall and Britten Theatre.

Enhancing your VisitThe RCM Museum of Music preserves and displays an internationally renowned collection of more than 1,500 items including musical instruments, portraits, sculptures, photographs and engravings related to music. Many of the instruments in the collection are in playing condition and can be heard during museum events or during guided tours.

The RCM Museum of Music is open Tuesday to Friday, 11.30am to 4.30pm, and is free to visit. If you would like to book a guided tour (£5 per head or £4 concessions) please call 020 7591 4842. Groups and research access by appointment. Find out more at www.rcm.ac.uk/museum
