Dear Cattle Producer,

Welcome to our 2016 bull sale. We have a good selection of bulls; redand black, purebred and composite. They are thick bodied bulls witha lot of depth.

The family are a big help every year. Jared does a lot with the bulls andhe knows them better than I do. He also helps Lisa with the catalog.She puts the ads together and gathers all the data for the book. Herhusband, Mark, is deployed overseas since September and will be backin May. Lisa will also be having a baby in April, go figure. Matt is a lotof help with the cattle and all the mechanic work that needs to be done.Kathy keeps us all fed and takes care of the grandkids that persist inshowing up. Her back keeps her from being able to do the sale lunchany more but she still plans it out and does the rolls and desserts.

The other day Lisa and I where comparing ultrasound data on the bulls. The younger cows are showing a big improvement incarcass merit compared to the older cows. However, we can’t forget the traits those cows excel in like calving ease and longevity.A live calf is better than a dead one. The second trait we focus on is wean weights and how to get heavier fall weights balanced withgood calving ease. Third, we really try and watch the disposition of the cattle. We cull heavily on this. The docility EPD is one Ihave noticed some discrepancy in. One herd bull that has never had a calf culled on disposition has a really low DOC and an otherwith several calves culled for disposition has a high DOC. We just try and tell you if there is a problem or remove the animal ifthey are bad enough.

Many breeders don’t feed out their calves but we do to give us a well rounded picture of our program. There is quite a differencebetween actual data and EPDs at times. The last trait we look at is carcass. We feed our own calves and buy calves from our bulls.These calves consistently bring a premium for the carcass value. This is usually the only profit left in feeding cattle.

Environment plays a big roll in each breeder operation. We tend to run our cows a little on the tough side. We feed hay in thewinter when the grass is gone, along with some salt & mineral. Then we calve them out on the hills except in cold or stormyweather.

Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unitdifference between bulls. The difference can be used to determine how much abull is worth in compared to another.
