Thank you for your interest in our 5th Annual Bull Sale. Congratulations on being a cow/calf producer in the past year where we saw the best calf prices in history. We hope you all have another profitable year and that you will give us an opportunity to provide bulls to your operation which we believe will add pounds, quality and eye appeal to your calves.

We are pleased to have our sale at St. Onge Livestock again and hope to see you there when we offer our bulls for your inspection and purchase. Our offering will include an outstanding group of yearling bulls raised in ranch country with no pampering or feedlot. We raised the bar on quality when we selected bulls last fall and kept only outstanding animals which were chosen without regard to parentage, date of birth or breed percentage. Birth weight, disposition, performance, phenotype and soundness were primary considerations.

All bulls were weaned on November 9, 2014 after spending the summer with their mothers in rough country with no creep feed or supplement. Weaning weights were recorded on all bulls and they were fed in one group in a 60 acre pasture where they had plenty of exercise. They were fed the same long stem grass/alfalfa hay mix as the cow herd was fed plus Purina Mills Accuration.

Our intention was to grow the bulls in a range environment where they would maintain good feet and legs. While rate of gain is secondary to proper growth and development, we weighed all bulls again on January 24, 2015 to give buyers data on how each bull gained in comparison to the group in the same conditions. The group gained an average of 3.3 pounds per day over this period despite the nasty weather during the first month of weaning.

Bull buyers from our past sales continue to comment on how well our bulls have maintained good body condition after covering lots of ground and breeding large groups of cows over the summer. The reports on the quality of the calves and pounds added at sale time are equally positive and encouraging. We believe this group of bulls is our best and deepest offering and these bulls can have a positive influence on your herd. Our program offers both increased pounds in the sale of steer calves along with desirable heifer calves who possess great maternal traits.

SALE TERMS AND DISCOUNTSSALESAll bulls meeting sale criteria (fertility and health) will be sold to the highest bidder in the traditional sale barn auction format. All interested Buyers should obtain a Buyer’s number and will have the opportunity to purchase each bull. In the event more than one Buyer desires to purchase a bull, each Buyer can enter bids on the bull until a high bid is determined which will result in a sale to the highest bidder.

PROMPT POSSESSION DISCOUNTS/REFUNDSPayment in full on sale day is required for the purchase of all bulls. If you make full payment and haul your bulls home from St. Onge, you receive a $100 per head discount when you pay for your purchase. Buyers picking up their bulls at our ranch on or before March 31, 2015 will receive a $50 per bull refund. Refund checks will be mailed to Buyers on or before April 15, 2015.

TRANSPORTATION/POSSESSIONWe will be pleased to assist with transportation and care of bulls following the sale for those who do not elect to take advantage of the Prompt Possession Refunds described in the paragraph above. Please contact us before the sale to discuss options if you do not plan to pick up your bulls by March 31, 2015. If no arrangements are made prior to the sale bulls remaining after March 31, 2015 will accrue a feed and care charge of $5 per day until picked up by the Buyer. Special arrangements regarding delivery and care may be made to accommodate each Buyer at the discretion of Seller.

FERTILITYAll bulls will be fertility tested and scrotal measured prior to the sale. All data including scrotal measurements will be available to buyers after testing is complete and a Certification of Breeding Soundness will be provided for each bull upon sale as issued by Dr. James Myers of Belle Fourche Veterinary Clinic.

BREEDING GUARANTEEAll bulls are guaranteed breeders from the date of sale until September 1, 2015. In the event any bull is unable to breed during that period seller will at seller’s option and discretion either provide a replacement bull of comparable quality if such is available or give the buyer credit at next year’s sale in an amount equaling the net sales price less salvage value of the bull. No breeding guarantee shall be provided in the event buyer is negligent in the care and handling of the bull. Buyers seeking additional protection of their investment are advised to purchase mortality insurance.

SEMEN INTEREST RETAINEDSeller Wayne Wilson reserves and retains a one-third revenue sharing semen interest in all bulls selling unless specifically stated otherwise in writing at sale. This includes the right to collect semen for our own in herd use with such to be done during the time of year least inconvenient to Buyer. If semen is sold Seller shall receive one-third of the gross revenue less collection costs. Buyer shall have full possession and salvage value.

The highest weaning weight bull of the group out of a great young cow. Has been a good gainer and favorite since that time. Hard to miss this standout.

A square made and strong topped Driver bull with a deep soft side and a clean sheath.

The highest gainer after weaning in an attractive and sound package.

Another good Driver out of a great old Future Direction bred cow with lots of eye appeal.

A full brother to Lot 49 from last year’s sale and another good one from a great old cow that always weans a good one.

One of my favorite Driver calves all year that has performed well in all aspects. The bull business would be easy if every calf were like this one.

This Driver son looked great at weaning but spent a few weeks not feeling well in December. Was never treated as I couldn’t diagnose anything treatable and been gaining well since he got back to normal in January. Don’t overlook this one because of his low gain rate.

A big stout and attractive Driver who posted really good weaning and gain numbers.

My pick of the group to raise super sound and functional females. Very balanced and attractive. Great disposition out of a great old cow who we are considering using as a Donor cow for some ET calves as her past offspring have been of great value to us.

Out to injury. A big stout bull with frame and muscle to add some pounds to your calves. He got a little worked up when left by himself during clipping so not the most docile of the group.

This Driver is strong topped, smooth shouldered and clean in his front as well as free moving and big footed.

A sound and free moving Driver out of a good producing Pannell cow who raises a high weaning and good gaining calf every year.

One of the best gainers during the test period with a good disposition and strong top, nice front and clean sheath.

Yet another eye appealing and athletic Driver son with balance and muscle. Good numbers and a good cow family as well.

The most expressively muscled bull in the group with a big top and great disposition. Hard to miss him in a group.

This balanced and eye appealing Driver should sire both desirable steer and heifer calves. A Driver out of a really good Pannell Blue Design cow.

Everyone notices and likes this big stout baldie Titleist son with his big hip, high muscle volume, deep soft rib and huge top. We couldn’t get a picture to reflect just how good he is so come check him out for yourself.

A strong topped and clean made April born Titleist. This moderated framed Titleist is deep and soft in his side as well as free moving and athletic.

Maybe the best profiling bull of the group that is packing on muscle by the day. He is deep and soft sided with a super strong top. Has a big black goggle over his non-pictured eye for an attractive look. Should sire some super females and steers with eye appeal.

A solid black Titleist out of a super good Lead on cow who produces a big gainer every year. He has a big hip and muscle deep into his lower quarter plus plenty of eye appeal.

A baldie marked Titleist who gets better every day.

A strong topped long bodied bull with lots of depth and volume.

A big stout bull that Cory and I noticed many times while clipping because of his profile and volume. He has been packing on the pounds since January and is an impressive deep sided and big topped bull.

This stout and athletic bull is thick when viewed from behind and big topped. The only Prosper son that is a half blood.

Don’t miss this big stout and square made solid black bull sired by an Upgrade son. He is rugged, deep and soft sided and walks out really good.

This mid-April born solid black bull has really caught up with the older bulls. He is a big rugged made stout bull with lots of guts and a soft side.

Here is the youngest bull in the group. He is clean fronted with strong top and sharp profile.

A low birth weight bull out of a Hooks Shear Force bred bull and a first calf Driver heifer. Great disposition and one of the few in the group I would consider using on first calf heifers.

Quick Reference to ASA EPDs and $ Indexes

Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sire’s EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and -5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). The key to using EPDs is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were a trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we would expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile- ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. $ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes:All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you are keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls (as described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another, or put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000.) A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed.
