Academic ProgramThe courses you take to earn an HCC

associate in arts (AA) degree are the same coursesthatyouwouldtakeduringthefirsttwo years at a four-year institution. In addition to satisfying general education requirements at HCC, you take introductory courses in your intended upper-division major.

By taking introductory courses in your intended major, you discover whether your chosenmajorisagoodfitforyou.Ifyoudecide to change majors, your introductory courses transfer as elective credit and you avoidtakingupper-divisioncoursesinafieldthat is not right for you. Transfer agreements with public and private four-year colleges and universities, and good planning by you, lead toaseamlessandefficienttransitiontoafour-year institution.

English Language ProficiencyIn order to pursue a full course of study in

an HCC associate degree program, you must demonstrate the ability to speak, read, write, and understand English at a level appropri-ate for college-level studies. To verify your level,HCCrequiresproofofEnglishproficiencybefore admission is approved, such as:

• TOEFL: 61 on the iBT or higher.• IELTS: 5.5 overall band score or higher.• English Composition (ENC 1101) from

another U.S. college or university.• U.S. high school diploma.• Advanced levels English course of a recog-

nized ESL school in the U.S., or the highest level of a regionally accredited English language program.

English for Academic PurposesStudents may be required to take place-

ment exams upon arrival at HCC in order to determine whether they have college-ready Englishlanguageproficiency.HCCreliesonplacement tests to determine whether English for Academic Purposes (EAP) or other prepa-ratory courses are required prior to a student enrolling in college-level courses. IELTS and TOEFL scores are used for admission purposes only (not for placement in HCC courses).

HCC’s EAP program offers six levels of instruction in four skill areas: grammar, writ-ing, reading, and speech and listening. EAP courses taken at levels 5 and 6 can count as elective credit for the AA degree.

Located on HCC’s Dale Mabry Campus in Tampa, Hawks Landing provides fully furnished apartments, a resort-styleswimmingpool,astate-of-the-artcomputerlab,andafitnesscenter.The housing complex is only a few blocks away from shopping and restaurants, and within walking distance of Raymond James Stadium, home to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (American football), and Steinbrenner Field, spring training home of the 2009 Baseball World Series Champions, the New York Yankees.
