As everyone will know and feel, winter is starting to take hold and we are spending less time outside doing things and enjoy the simple things like the sunshine. This week, we are looking at changing that. Teachers are planning on getting outside more to do their lessons, you might see some silly dress up activities and people taking time to enjoy the simple things in life like a morning coffee before work. This focus aligns very well with the whole school focus of Take Notice Be mindful, remember the simple things that give us joy, finding the beauty in things and embracing them. The current daily attendance rate is 93% which is above the expected level but we only have 81% of our students attending school 90% of the time. This is the figure we need to lift. We have adjusted some of our practices here at school and rolls are submitted by 9.00am each morning. This is why you may have started to receive an automatic SMS. If you receive this, please respond with the reason, even if you have come into the office when dropping off your child. We are asking for your help in getting your child to school each day and on time. Just 15 minutes missed each day adds up to over an hour of lost learning each week and up to 50 hours for the year. Week Seven, Term Two, Tuesday, 1 June 2021 - Edition Three Hundred and Sixty-One

This week, the staff of NEPS will have a strong focus on our professional and personal wellbeing.

This focus aligns very well with the whole school focus of Take Notice – Be mindful, remember the simple things that give us joy, finding the beauty in things and embracing them.

Please take some time this week to stop, breath and enjoy all the wonderful things we all have.

P&C Information We would like to thank all the generous families that have donated and contributed prizes for the raffle so far. Over the past week we have received some incredible donations. The P&C are asking on families to donate things such as vouchers, wine, food, artwork and accommodation etc. These could be used for a raffle later in the year or a silent auction. We look forward to exploring ideas on how to organise this at the next meeting.

The P&C have also put together a tasting night for those wanting to try the wine and beer we have for sale for our fundraiser.

Tulloch Wines and The Beer Drop are donating 20% of all sales to NEPS as part of an ongoing fundraiser. They are also offering free shipping on all orders. Our tasting event will be held at Good Brothers Espresso Shop on June 10th with all money from ticket sales going directly to our P&C. Simply search for our school through eventbrite.com.au. A big shout out to the NEPS families at Good Brother Espresso Shop and Tulloch Wines for making this night a possibility.

What are we fundraising for?

One of the roles of a P&C is to fundraise to support the school. We hope to fundraise in ways that also build a sense of community at NEPS. We are currently aiming to provide an enticing learning space in the library and special projects room. This request was brought by teaching staff and Principal, Mick McCann to the P&C as a goal. Below are some design images for the rooms - particularly special is more reader friendly space in the library.

If you would like to talk more about these plans, come along to the P&C meeting 5.30pm, NEXT Tuesday 8thJune.

You can email [email protected] there are particular topics you would like to see put in the agenda.

Brazilian Jui Jitsu Demonstration For the information of students and parents, there will be a short Gracie Barra Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) self-defence demonstration in the school COLA on 10 and 17 of June.

Students will not be required to participate in the demonstration.

The Gracie Barra BJJ school is located the middle of Newcastle city on King Street and a number of male and female Newcastle East students already attend the school.

BJJ is a highly effective self-defence grappling style which does not involve striking or kicking. BJJ revolves around the concept that a smaller and weaker person can successfully defend themselves against a bigger and stronger person using leverage and technique.

Also central to the BJJ ethos are the concepts of respect, discipline and loyalty which are taught in a fun, safe and family-friendly environment.

The demonstration will be conducted by Professor Gustavo Pinto who is the head instructor of the Newcastle BJJ school and a 4th degree black belt.

Students will be provided with some information to bring home to parents after the demonstration. Further information is also available on their website: gbnewcastlecity.com.au Athletics Results and Zone Athletics

Congratulations to all of the students who placed in an event at our recent school Athletics Carnival. Ribbons and Age Champions medals were awarded at assembly last week to our very patient recipients and the results put up under the COLA. Congratulations to our Age Champions: Alice W, Cooper C, Max F R, Clara L, Liev O, Mei O and Lexi d M.

The Newcastle City Zone Athletics Carnival will be held at Newcastle Athletics Track in Glendale on Friday 6th August (Term 3, Week 4). Students invited to attend this carnival are highlighted in the results table in this newsletter. They are the first three students in each 100m age race, the first two students in the 1500m, 200m and 800m and the first two in each field event provided they have met the zone qualifying height/distance for their age group. More information will follow for this early next term. If you have any questions before then please email me.

Mrs Kirkman

P&C’s PERSON – Bec Wilkinson Secretary I’m the proud mother of two students: Grace (5/6B) and George (1H). I’ve been a member of the P and C (on and off) for 5 or so years now. As I’m not able to be up at the school helping out as much as I would like, being on the P&C is my small way of supporting the students and staff.

Plus, it’s an excellent means of meeting parents you may not necessarily have a chance to interact with otherwise. It’s a great feeling to know that you’re working to help support the staff and teachers in a practical way.
