Independence Day Celebrations at the Consulate General
India’s Independence Day was celebrated with great pride at the Indian Consulate in Perth with around 100 attendees. The ceremony started with flag hoisting, followed by President of India’s speech to the nation and patriotic songs presented by Hindi Samaj in association with Sanskriti Group. Like every other Indian event, the event would have been incomplete without tasty Indian snacks, which were served at the end
HSWA at Colours of India function Independence Day celebrations didn’t just end at the Consulate General. A brilliant team of lovely dancers presented a sweet offering to Radha-Krishna by performing their version of Raas-Lila representing Hindi Samaj of WA Inc. at Colours of India celebrations organised by the Indian Society of WA. Thank you to the team for participating on HSWA’s behalf

Great news!!
Australia allows extended stay The Hindu; 7 September; Special Correspondent Canberra has decided to allow parents of Australian citizens and permanent residents to stay longer. “The Australian Government has listened to requests and responded. These new arrangements, once in place, will provide Indian parents wishing to visit their children settled in Australia with greater options,” said Australian High Commissioner Peter Varghese in a statement. By the end of the year, Australia will grant, on a case-by-case basis, five-year tourist visas with a 12-month stay on each entry to those who have applied for a parent visa outside Australia.
Community Plea Dear Friends
This communication is for providing further update about the status of Indian boy Kunal Walia who met with a serious motor vehicle accident on 11/10/2011 and remained unconscious for about 6 months. Many thanks to the community members who have been supporting our effort by donating money and for providing moral and general help to Kunal and his family.
Whilst the visa of his mother (Meenakshi) was extended by DIAC with some conditions, the visa of his brother (Karan) was not. Lodging an issue with MRT might have enabled Karan to get bridging visa with very strict conditions but this was not favoured by the family.
With the help of local medical practitioners we located a renowned Neurosurgeon Dr Manoj Sobti at Kunal’s home town Ludhiana. Dr Sobti is former Head of the Department of Neurosurgery at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital and runs his own Sobti Neuro and Super Speciality Hospital at Ludhiana. Preliminary contact with Dr Sobti suggested that he would be able to take over the further treatment and the surgical operation. If necessary Kunal can come back to Perth for operation when the swelling on his brain subsides in 6 months or more.
Additionally, the funds required to sustain the family till Kunal’s operation, in terms of accommodation, food and medicines are in the order of $35,000. With your kind donations we could only raise about 20% of that amount. Due to this reason and also due to the fact Kunal’s brother could not get visa extension, we supported the family’s decision to go back to India with a promise to continue supporting Kunal’s medical treatment in India. The funds collected so far will go a long way in meeting Kunal’s medical expenses in India. We purchased their one-way tickets and the family has gone back and advised us of their safe arrival in India. They have also made contact with Neurosurgeons Dr Sobti and another Dr Kaushal for 2nd opinion and have been recommended some medical tests. We will remain in touch with Kunal’s family and keep you advised of the progress.
Prior to the family’s departure an advice from DIAC was obtained that Kunal can come back for surgical operation on Medical visa if necessary. Several errors and misrepresentations in the medical documents were corrected with substantial effort, prior to the family’s departure. In addition to your financial contributions, we acknowledge the assistance of an Australian family, in particular Mr Roger of Attadale, who generously provided temporary accommodation to unknown Kunal’s family for over a month after discharge from hospital, on a very low rent.
If you would like to donate any money to this cause, please send a cheque for any amount for “KUNAL COMMUNITY ASSISTANCE FUND” or transfer money electronically into the KUNAL COMMUNITY ASSISTANCE FUND; BSB 066-110 Account NO. 1024 2866.
For any further queries or clarifications please do not hesitate to contact any of us.
