At Hino Australia we have always known that our trucks are tough, reliable and durable, and the JD Power & Associates survey in the US has confirmed it – for the third year in a row.

Once again, Hino has scored the highest marks for its vehicle engines in the conventional medium-duty truck class in the US.

According to the report, Hino did particularly well in engine reliability and dependability, average fuel economy and vibration at idle.

Each year truck and engine manufacturers are being challenged with the task of making cleaner and more efficient engines – while customers rightfully demand more power and better reliability. Hino is proud that such a respected agency sees its product as being at the forefront of the industry in delivering these requirements.

We think winning the same award for three years running is a pretty good barometer of the quality of the product Hino is bringing to market across the globe.

Another example of Hino’s commitment to tough trucks can be found in the company’s victory in the production class at this year’s prestigious Dakar Rally.

In its 20th year of competing in the race (which is now held in South America) Hino scored its 11th victory in the Under 10-Litre class (one that it has contested just 12 times). It is also the 20th consecutive time that Hino has finished the gruelling event.

The Dakar is run over 9500km of perhaps the most arduous terrain of any motor race in the world. Hino’s excellent record in the event is something the company is justifiably proud of.

In March, Hino conducted a media introduction to its range of Euro 5 models – and the new vehicles were

received with encouraging enthusiasm by the assembled guests. In this issue of Torque we take a further look at these impressive new models.

The next public outing for our new trucks will take place at the star of Australia’s commercial vehicle calendar, the Brisbane Truck Show.

The Brisbane Truck Show is still the southern hemisphere’s largest, and has always been a friend of Hino. We launched Australia’s first hybrid truck at the 2007 show – where it subsequently went on to become the first light-duty truck to win the coveted Truck of the Show title.

One of the exciting developments at the 2011 edition will be the show’s new location, the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. I’m sure exhibitors and visitors alike will revel in the centre’s impressive, modern surroundings.

We have had a lot of exciting developments recently, but all of this positive news has been tempered by the devastating earthquake and resulting tsunamis that have struck Hino’s homeland of Japan.

With such a large part of Japan affected by these events, our thoughts are with the greater Hino family – executives, production workers, as well as friends and family of all Hino staff – at this time and I know you’ll join with me in sending the whole of the country your best wishes in this time of crisis and subsequent rebuilding.

Japan suffered its largest ever earthquake on 11 March.

Fortunately all Hino employees are safe and there was no major damage to the Hino production facilities.

However, a number of Hino employees come from Tohoku – which was severely affected by the

earthquake and tsunami – and they were deeply affected by its impact on families and friends.

The 9.0-magnitude earthquake epicenter was approximately 72 kilometers east of the Oshika Peninsula of Tohoku.

In the week following the

earthquake and tsunami, Hino dispatched 50 staff, together with food and gasoline, to the Tohoku area to support local parts suppliers and dealers.

Power rationing is still in place across Japan at time of writing. Some of Hino’s suppliers have been

affected, especially the supplier for rear axle. Hino has sent a team of people to the plant to speed-up recovery efforts.

It was expected at time of writing that Hino’s production would resume shortly but would take time to get back to full capacity.

Queensland-based dealer Hi-WAY 1 Truck and Tractor has

opened its new

premises on the Bruce Highway at Forest Glen on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

Hi-WAY 1 moved from its home of five-and-a-half years at Kunda Park

to the prime location with highway frontage.

The dealership provides complete solutions for all transport and agricultural requirements by offering exceptional brands, including Hino and John Deere.

Group General Manager Mark Dobson said the new address would be more accessible for customers and give the dealership prime exposure thanks to the Bruce Highway location.

“We plan to make the most of our prominent position and encourage drive-by traffic, plus we can offer our customers better facilities and access,” he said.

Hi-WAY 1 has separated its Hino and John Deere businesses at the new premises.

“The Hi-WAY 1 Truck Centre and our staff specialise in trucks as our sole focus,” Mr Dobson said.

Established in 2001 by Dennis & Sue Jurss, Hi-WAY 1 started operations with two locations and a total of 20 local staff.

Today it has grown to five branches spread across the Sunshine Coast to Mackay and employs over 100 staff throughout Queensland. Hi-Way 1 is celebrating its 10-year anniversary in April.

Dealer Barry Maney Hino has backed Hino’s strong support for the agricultural industry with its presence at the recent Sungold and Wimmera Field Days.

Sungold Field Days are a unique opportunity to advertise and display items and goods used by the dairy farming and cattle breeding markets. This three-day event is held on the

grounds of Warrnambool Cheese and Butter at Allansford, some 12km east of Warrnambool on the Great Ocean Road.

The Wimmera Machinery Field Days attract thousands of people and generate millions of dollars in trade each year across a broad cross-section of industry and business.

Barry Maney Hino displayed a range of 500 Series trucks alongside various

300 Series models at both events.“Both events were great

opportunities to promote the new dealership in Warrnambool,” Hino Australia regional sales manager Damian Prescott said.

Barry Maney also has one dealership in Mount Gambier.

In Melbourne, Prestige Hino dealership threw its support behind

another equipment exhibition – the ACE Australian Construction Equipment Expo held at Sandown Park and targeted at government departments and local councils.

“This was the first time Prestige Hino was involved, and the enquiry level has been good from people all over Australia and beyond,” Mr Prescott said.

Sales manager for Vanderfield Hino trucks in Toowoomba Gary Beutel finished the 2010 New York City Marathon in the top 1000 places.

This achievement was all the more remarkable given he was told he would never walk again after a horrific truck accident eight years ago nearly claimed his life.

In what was his third marathon Mr Beutel finished in his personal best time of three hours and two minutes.

“It was fantastic to achieve a personal best in one of the world’s great marathons,” he said.

Mr Beutel was one of 20 participants chosen to represent Australia in the marathon.

Having only taken up marathon

running in 2008, Mr Beutel said he would never forget the atmosphere.

“New York takes your breath away,” he said.

“There were two million people lining the streets cheering the runners on, and in some places they were lined-up 10 deep.”

In preparation for the big event he ran approximately 80 kilometres a week and got up most mornings at 4.30am to train.

During the race Mr Beutel allowed himself the luxury of admiring the breathtaking New York landscape: a stark contrast to the familiar scenery of Toowoomba.

“It was the experience of a lifetime,” he said.

Illawarra Hino has joined with the Wollongong Hawks as a partner for the 2010–11 National Basketball League (NBL) season.

The popular Illawarra-based basketball team has enjoyed a resurgence in form this season, with Hawks legend Glen Saville and US import Gary Ervin helping return the club to the upper echelons of the league.

As a well-known business within the area, Illawarra Hino joined forces with Illawarra Toyota to sponsor the only national sporting team solely representing Wollongong.

Illawarra Hino logos can be seen on the Hawks’ white ‘away’ uniform as the team strives to win its first NBL championship in a decade.

Illawarra Hino sales manager Kurt Hofer says it makes perfect sense to

align a prominent local business with a high-profile community organisation.

“The Hawks are a real feel-good story in this area,” Mr Hofer said.

“They were the first sports team to win a national title for this region, which means there is plenty of goodwill towards them in the community.

“That can be seen by the way the locals banded together to save the club as it went through financial difficulties over the past couple of years.

“We felt that joining with the Hawks was a good opportunity for us to give something back to the community.”

The team’s home court, known as The Sandpit, has been packed for almost every home game this season.

“The fans here have really warmed to the spectacular way that the team is playing at the moment,” Mr Hofer said.

“We’re very proud to be associated with such a well-regarded community organisation and we hope the

relationship goes from strength to strength – hopefully with plenty of championships for the Hawks!”

Hino’s Parts Proficiency Program came to its conclusion at the end of 2010, with the national final being held at Hino headquarters on 10 December.

The program was open to parts interpreters from right across the Hino Motor Sales Australia dealership network.

Contestants were emailed 15

questions each month relating to parts interpreting over a six-month period – for which they had two weeks to respond.

Throughout the program the contestants’ scores were tallied, resulting in the five parts advisors with the highest scores being invited to Sydney to compete in the final.

There, they underwent half a day of

thorough testing on all areas of parts interpreting to determine the winner.

The winning score was achieved by Sci Fleet Hino’s Matthew Preston, who won goods to the value of $2,500.

Second place went to Prestige Hino’s Rachelle Dyer, while Kevin Todd from City Hino took third place.

Hino’s regional parts manager, southern region, Kirk Harrison, said the

initiative is a way of ensuring the best service for customers.

“It is an added measure we can take to educate and train our parts interpreters.

“The questions are largely based on practical examples and new models, which means that we can use the program to keep our interpreters at a consistently high level,” he said.

HINO SUCCESS AT SANDOWN SAfETy DRIVE DAy

For the second time Hino was a major sponsor of the renowned exhibition that showcased the latest in safety technology.

Hino Australia had a static display of the 700 Series (Euro 5) SH / SS models, along with a 300 Series Hybrid Product presentation. The FE (500 series Euro 5) and 300 Series Hybrid were used as customer drive vehicles on the day.

Hino Corporate Business Manager Mike Smith said the trucks received a great response, with many customers wanting to do a follow-up evaluation.

“It was a good opportunity to reinforce Hino's dedication to improving safety and ease of operation of the vehicles," Mr Smith said.

"For example, the Hino 500 Series now has, as standard equipment:

cabin strength certification to ECE-R29 standards; driver's SRS airbag; electric and heated exterior mirrors; ABS brakes on all models including 4x4, and on all 4x2 manual transmission models; and Easy Start for hill-start assist."

Victorian Transport Association CEO Philip Lovel said: “We want to convince decision-makers, regulators, policy-makers, and fleet operators that investing in safety technology will generate high returns.

“The Safety Drive Day was a great experience, enabling industry experts to witness the latest developments in truck and car safety technology first-hand.

“It showed us just how closely technology and safety are linked,” Mr Lovel said.

Global food and beverage company Nestlé has taken delivery of 20 Hino trucks to service its Nestlé Peters Ice Cream route business which includes smaller grocery and convenience stores.

The fleet of Hino 300 Series trucks has hit the roads in Victoria and New South Wales.

Nestlé National Route Transport Manager Clinton Sanders said Nestlé saw an opportunity to improve its customer service using trucks which increased reliability, safety and driver comfort and reduced driver fatigue.

“We have had good, positive feedback from our customers and

enhanced the quality of our product and reliability using this new truck fleet for our deliveries,” he said.

“The drivers are a vital interface with our customers, so they are very important.”

The new Hinos on the Nestlé fleet are ten 616 Auto models, seven 716 Auto models and three 714 Hybrid manuals.

They are fitted with specialised freezer bodies produced in Italy by Therma Truck.

The sign-written trucks are custom-built with hand-held units for ordering and fulfilling orders and invoicing on the spot.

With reduced fuel consumption and reduced emissions, the Hino Hybrids provide cleaner, more efficient transport and are used for the city routes to obtain the greatest economy in the start-stop traffic.

Mr Sanders said the driver’s feedback on using the trucks was very positive, with one of the experienced drivers finding that the advanced six-speed automatic transmission reduced driver fatigue by the end of the day.

The ‘intelligent’ automatic has learning characteristics and can comfortably adapt to the driving style of the driver.

It also has fuel-saving torque converter lock-up in five ratios – from second to sixth gear. It offers additional fuel savings by electronically switching the transmission to neutral when the truck is stationary and the brakes are applied.

“Strobe lights were also installed on the back of the trucks by Therma Truck to offer our drivers increased safety and visibility when unloading products,” Mr Sanders said.

Nestlé has a number of iconic ice-cream brands including Drumstick, Heaven, Maxibon and Billabong.

One of Australia’s leading food and beverage manufacturers is moving ahead with a new fleet of Hino trucks chosen for its custom-built features and flexibility.

The most recent iterations of Hino’s 500 and 700 Series trucks were originally commissioned to meet the strict new Australian Design Rule (ADR) 80/03 emissions targets – standards equivalent to Europe’s tight Euro 5 laws.

These laws are a constantly moving target – however manufacturers are generally given plenty of warning about the impending introduction of such measures.

As an established champion for tighter emissions standards within the commercial vehicle industry, Hino is traditionally ahead of the game in its implementation.

Hino Australia divisional manager product strategy, Alex Stewart, said Hino has a responsibility to move ahead of the times.

“Hino has always taken great pride in the technology inherent in its vehicles,” he said. “That is particularly the case with regard to emissions and the impact of its vehicles on the environment.

“This pride became industry expectation when we successfully launched Australia’s first diesel-hybrid vehicle, and the first hybrid truck.

“The marketplace now looks to Hino to be at the forefront of technology in this field. On top of

that, as a part of the Toyota Motor Corporation – which is a global pioneer of hybrid technology – the expectation for impressively low emissions outputs continues to rise.”

As a result of Hino’s work, only minimal changes were required to the design and operation of its full range of light, medium and heavy-duty trucks in order to meet the new guidelines.

The good news for the truck market is that not only has Hino introduced some of the very latest engine and transmission technology, the company has also added a host of improvements, additional features

and some new models to cater more specifically for certain sectors of the market.

“We’ve continued to improve the trucks in all areas, including driver comfort and safety features,” Mr Stewart said.

“For example, the Hino 500 Series now has as standard equipment: cabin strength certification to ECE-R29 standards; driver's SRS airbag; electric and heated exterior mirrors; ABS brakes on all models including 4x4, and on all 4x2 manual transmission models; Easy Start (ES) for hill-start assist; and even a new charcoal-coloured trim.”

NEW ENGINES, MORE POWER FOR HINO 500

Hino FC, FD and FE models have a new five-cylinder J07E engine, which delivers more power and torque and better fuel economy than the six-cylinder J08E engine it supersedes.

The Hino J07E engine is the latest in engine development from Hino, offering leading-edge technology that achieves increased fuel efficiency and lower emissions.

“We can now offer cleaner trucks which deliver on fuel efficiency and low emissions,” Mr Stewart said.

“The standard-cab models have the new engine, while the wide-cab FG, GH and FM8J models have an improved version of the J08E engine.

“The improved Hino J08E delivers 16kW more power than its US04-rated predecessor.”

Improvements in the 500 Series engines include new engine control units (ECUs), enhanced fuel mapping and effective variable-nozzle turbochargers (VNTs) which improve fuel economy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Emission technology also includes using a cooled exhaust-gas recirculation system (EGR) and a diesel oxidation catalyst with a particulate filter (DPR) to break down various pollutants in the exhaust gases.

“There are a number of new and exciting features across the 500 series range,” Mr Stewart said.

“The entire 500 Series has benefited from the extensive Australian testing and evaluation carried out by Hino, to ensure that these models best meet the local environmental and climatic conditions.

“We’ve also taken the opportunity to update the 500 Series and add new models. For example in the FC (10,400 kg GVM) range, there is a new model with a wheelbase of 4650mm – to better suit the local freight application where there are high demands on weight distribution.”

MORE MEDIUM-DUTY OPTIONSHino’s expanded 500 Series range

includes new FC, FE, GH and FM8J models.

The FE is a new model, replacing the GD, and is offered in both 12,000kg and 14,000kg GVM ratings.

It is an example of Hino’s efforts to best meet market demand to transport heavier and more varied loads by establishing new and improved GVM/GCM ratings.

The new FE models (12,000–14,000kg GVM) have 19.5” wheel

rims and low-profile tyres to achieve the low chassis frame height many operators require for ease of loading access, as well as occupational health and safety requirements.

The popular GH (17,000kg GVM) model range also has a new model variant – a short wheelbase (3760mm) model that will make an ideal, lightweight ‘around-town’ prime mover.

At the other end of the spectrum, the heavier rated FM8J (26,000kg GVM) has a new 6500mm wheelbase and the choice of nine-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.

The FG and GH models have the new feature of a four-point cabin suspension system, for increased driver comfort and therefore reduced driver fatigue.

HINO 500 LEADS ON SAFETYHino has raised the bar on truck

safety as well as technology, with the medium-duty 500 Series trucks featuring a full safety package as standard equipment.

The new Euro 5 500 Series has cabin strength certification to ECE-29 standards and driver’s SRS airbag, including 4x4 models.

All Euro 5 models, including 4x4 models, have ABS brakes as standard equipment.

All 4x2 manual transmission models have Hino Easy Start (ES) for hill-start assist.

The Hino ES system is fully adjustable for load and time taken for

Alex Stewart, Hino Australia divisional manager, product strategy.

take-off, thereby increasing safety and ease of operation by maintaining sufficient brake pressure to prevent roll-back until the manual clutch is engaged.

All standard-cab models (FC, FD and FE) have a switchable Anti-Slip Regulator, and the FC model has retained the unique and highly functional four-wheel brake lock system.

Hino 500 Series has cruise control as standard equipment – plus the active safety feature of heated, power-operated exterior mirrors.

Vehicle security features include an integrated engine immobiliser and new long-range keyless entry.

Hino Australia’s Alex Stewart said Hino’s new range of Euro 5-rated trucks was undoubtedly among the safest and cleanest on the market.

A BIGGER HINO 700 RANGEThe new Hino 700 range is

comprised of 11 models, compared with seven in the superseded US04 range, and encompasses two additional market segments.

The Euro 5 700 Series range offers a choice of three axle configurations, two cabins, three engine power ratings, two transmissions and three suspension systems.

Highlights of the new range include an all-new 450 horsepower 4x2 tractor model and two 480hp, 32-tonne GVM 8x4 models – suitable for use as a tipper, concrete mixer/pump or container transport.

The new SH 2045 model 4x2 tractor has Hino’s latest E13C-VF 13-litre direct-injection turbocharged engine, with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) for reduced emissions.

Altus Traffic Management has fitted a unique body type to the light-duty Hino, which is specially designed to help reduce any hindrance to traffic to an absolute minimum.

The new bodies are referred to as ‘drop-decks’ and allow the back of the body to be lowered to near road level.

This allows Altus Traffic Management workers to harness themselves to the drop-deck and deploy traffic cones and other management devices as the truck remains in motion.

This unique arrangement improves the speed and efficiency of the Altus on-site operation, thereby minimising disruption to traffic.

Altus Traffic Management is a nationwide company focusing on providing traffic control and traffic management planning across major utilities and infrastructure projects.

NSW and ACT state manager for Altus, Mark Tripiciano, says the new Hino trucks fit the application nicely.

“They are a new truck to us,” he said. “All of our drivers who have been behind the wheel have enjoyed driving them.

“Most importantly they have been very effective – especially the automatic trucks we have brought onto the fleet.

“Obviously when you are strapped to a moving vehicle as part of your job, you are going to prefer a smooth ride,” Mr Tripiciano said.

“The automatic trucks really do deliver that – which makes the job so much easier for the guys on the back.

“On top of that, these trucks will be doing a lot of stop-and-start driving – we’re expecting that the automatic gearbox, obviously with no clutch, will make an improvement to our maintenance costs.

“When they’re out on-site, our drivers tend to focus on getting their jobs done as quickly and efficiently as possible – they don’t always focus on mechanical sympathy.

“These gearboxes should help with that.”

HINO MANAGES TRAFFIC

A prominent Australian traffic management company has chosen Hino’s 300 Series to help manage traffic at some of the country’s largest infrastructure and capital works projects.

TOP NEW TRUCK FOR

One of Australia’s premier training and recruitment providers for the mining, civil engineering and transportation industries has just updated its fleet with a heavy-duty Hino 700 Series truck from Hino dealer CMI Adelaide.

Richards Mining Services (RMS) operates 14 Hino trucks and offers licence training for the transport and mining industries to allow drivers to seek any level of truck licence.

RMS offers a vast array of training courses, recruitment solutions and corporate services, with three training centres in WA and a new facility in Adelaide that will

specialise in heavy vehicle training.RMS Group Operations Manager

Graeme Richards said he had been using Hino trucks as training vehicles for four years.

“We keep the trucks for three to four years and then turn them over, because we believe that if we want to give the industry the best training, we need to use the most up-to-date equipment,” he said.

A combination of vehicles and equipment means the company can meet the demands of its clients by creating various configurations – from a rigid crane truck, semi-trailer with extendable and drop-decks, through to road trains for its learner drivers.

“We use the real thing so the learner drivers will know what it will feel like,” Mr Richards said. “For this reason we have lots of different truck

options for training, including anything from 6 to 18-speed transmissions.”

RMS also uses tippers and runs three brand new agitators or cement mixers.

“Hino trucks have a good warranty, and we now only use Hino trucks – we have found their service support to be the best,” Mr Richards said.

“If we have a problem they (the Hino service support staff) are 100 per cent reliable to help us fix it any time of the day or night.”

Mr Richards says the trucks are also easy to drive and

have good resale value.

Hino proves to be the right choice for a truck licence training provider.

Family-favourite potato chip brand Smith’s – owned by PepsiCo since 1998 – will soon take delivery of its 30th Hino Hybrid 714 truck.

The 10 new additions to the Smith’s Snackfood all-Hino Hybrid fleet will make it the equal-largest hybrid truck fleet in Australia and highlight the company’s increasing

commitment to the environment. This year is the third in succession

that Smith’s has purchased 10 Hino Hybrid 714s, reinforcing the growing popularity of Hino Hybrid power.

Smith's Service and Distribution Manager JP Smith said the company’s original decision to choose Hino Hybrids was based on practicality, cost-saving

and environmental benefits.

“We chose to move to hybrid trucks as most of our routes are in major metro areas, therefore we needed a smaller vehicle that could easily access those areas,” Mr Smith said.

“Hino’s Hybrid 714 was chosen because it was easy to drive, could carry the required stock levels, was less expensive to run and because of its environmental benefits.”

The Smith’s Snackfood Company Hinos deliver popular salted snack brands including Smith’s, Twisties, Doritos, Parkers Pretzels, Nobby’s Nuts and Red Rock Deli.

The company has taken the step of wrapping the cabs of its Hybrids with Hino’s official Hybrid logo and colour scheme – similar to the iconic blue colour of a Smith's potato chip packet.

The new trucks will add to those already in service in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.

Smith’s Snackfood drivers will undergo Hino Hybrid-specific training with leading driver training company DECA to ensure they are using all the Hybrid’s energy-saving technologies to their fullest.

“With such a large portion of our fleet now Hino Hybrids, we want to make sure everyone is properly trained,” Mr Smith continued.

“Training with DECA will help us gain the most from our hybrid fleet – we know we will see more efficiency.”

The Smith’s Snackfood Company employs 2100 people in Australia in the manufacturing and distribution of its products.

Father/son team Teruhito and

Yoshimasa Sugawara finished

first and second respectively in

the Under 10-litre category of

the Truck Division of the world’s

toughest off-road race.

The victory was Hino’s 11th out

of the 12 occasions it has contested

the category for trucks with a sub

10-litre engine displacement.

Hino was the first Japanese

manufacturer to enter the Dakar

when it tackled the then European

and African-based event in 1991.

In 1997 the company became

the first to claim a 1-2-3 finish in

the Truck Division. It has enjoyed

continued success since the Dakar

switched to South America in 2009.

Teruhito Sugawara also claimed

victory this year in the Series

Production category and finished

ninth overall in the Truck Division –

a remarkable feat against specially-

built race trucks with far larger

capacity engines.

Hino again raced two production-

based versions of its 500 Series

medium-duty truck which were

modified by Hino Team Sugawara for

the Dakar.The 500 Series highlighted

Hino's famous reliability and

durability by setting a new record

for consecutive finishes – it notched

up its 20th finish from as many

attempts. “We are very happy with how we

placed in this rally as our rankings

were better than we had expected,”

said Hino Motors Ltd chairman of the

board, Shoji Kondo.

“Not only that, it was great to

be in South America and take part

in the excitement. For me, this has reconfirmed the importance of our activities.”

“This is Hino's 20th anniversary of racing in this rally, and I am convinced that there is power in continuity. I am very glad that we have been able to come this far, thanks in no small degree to the passion of Mr Sugawara and his team.”

Team leader Yoshimasa Sugawara, still racing at age 69, was impressed with the team's finishing record. He also broke his own record for the most consecutive Dakar entries, which now stands at 28.

“Teruhito ran a great race to achieve first place, and I was able to finish the race,” Sugawara said.

“As much as I'm surprised at these results, I'm very satisfied. I am filled

with gratitude for everyone's support.”The Dakar Rally is an off-road

endurance race, typically known as a rally-raid, rather than a conventional rally.

The terrain over which Dakar competitors traverse is especially tough, and the competitors race in true off-road vehicles rather than the modified on-road vehicles used in most rallies.

Most of the competitive special sections are off-road, crossing dunes, mud, camel grass, rocks and desert. The ground covered in each stage varies from short distances up to 800–900km per day.

Dakar 2011 covered a gruelling 9500km across Argentina and Chile where teams faced challenges as diverse as the Andes mountain range and the Atacama Desert.

“This is hino's 20Th anniversary of racing in This rally, and i am convinced ThaT There is power in conTinuiTy. ”

fLOODS TAKE TOLLFloods take toll

The worst-affected Hino dealership was Sci-Fleet in Coopers Plains which had 1.5 metres of water throughout the entire dealership and lost 75 trucks.

Queensland regional sales manager Karl Hancox said Sci-Fleet re-opened for parts and service customers just over a week after the floods, thanks to the hard work of staff who began the clean-up as soon as the water had subsided, with sales staff returning shortly afterwards.

“Although the dealership needs some remedial work, Sci-Fleet dealer principal Craig Andersson is using this unfortunate opportunity to rebuild the dealership with a new internal layout to better suit the needs of staff and customers.

“Mr Andersson also thanked suppliers such as builder National

Buildplan Group and insurer Suncorp for their quick reaction to get them back up and running,” Mr Hancox said.

“Many other affected companies in the area have used this as an opportunity to start fresh with some new ideas.”

Iain Weigh Motors had minor flooding in the driveway entrance which disrupted access.

Mr Hancox said many other dealers in the area were not directly affected by flooding to their premises, but the loss of income to their customers means those ready to purchase trucks have had to delay their plans.

“A high proportion of customers in the area are farmers whose businesses have been heavily impacted. For example, wheat crops have been stockpiled and the money spent to

harvest these crops is not able to be recouped.”

Mr Hancox said unfortunately one customer lost five million dollars worth of crops.

Local government, councils and contractors have been engaged to facilitate the clean-up.

Rebuilding the network of roads and other infrastructure is expected to take years, with some roads not just needing rebuilding and resurfacing but also flood-proofing to try and protect the communities from being cut-off again in the future.

“Queensland Hino Dealers have been helping affected shires where possible,” Mr Hancox said.

“They are likely to use their current fleet of trucks and we hope in the future when they purchase replacement trucks

they will be Hino trucks.”Victorian regional sales manager

Damain Prescott said the heavy rain in Victoria had flooded the Mildura dealership.

“Similar to the situation up north, many of our customers in Victoria have been directly affected.”

In addition to helping with the clean-up, Hino Australia joined forces with Toyota, Toyota Material Handling and Toyota Technical Centre Australia at the recent Tamworth country music festival to contribute to the many people who have been affected by the flood disaster.

Hino dealer CMV Group has donated $50,000 to the Queensland flood relief effort through its foundation.

In addition they are matching, on a dollar-for-dollar basis, any donation made by the CMV Staff Foundation.

Many Hino dealerships and customers were seriously affected by the recent flooding in Queensland and Victoria – and the full economic fallout of the Queensland floods on the trucking industry may take months to become clear.

The launch of a number of new parts and accessories means Hino is even more capable of meeting its customers’ individual needs.

AdBlue™Hino’s AdBlue Diesel Exhaust

Fluid (DEF) is the most recent edition to the Hino Genuine Series.

AdBlue is a urea-based chemical reactant designed specifically for use in Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions.

The solution is made up of purified water and 32.5 per cent automotive-grade urea that acts as a carrying agent for the ammonia needed to convert NOx emissions from vehicles into nitrogen, water and carbon dioxide.

The AdBlue liquid is added to a special tank on the side of the chassis and depending on the models sometimes near the fuel tank (cross contamination must be avoided).

All equipment required for the installation of the AdBlue tank, such as pumps and hoses, are available throughout the Hino network.

AdBlue is non-toxic, non-polluting and non-flammable.

Seat covers – ‘Premium Series’ Hino has launched a new

contemporary line of premium seat covers specifically designed to suit Hino 300, 500 and 700 Series trucks.

The new designs feature a range of materials, with carbon fabric, canvas and sheepskin designs to choose from.

The carbon fabric seat covers feature a foam centre panel for added comfort.

The canvas covers both feature a rear storage pocket and heavy-duty reinforced stitching.

The carbon and canvas designs are flame retardant and UV stabilised.

They are both waterproof and feature a protective coating to repel spills and stains.

The genuine sheepskin covers offer superior comfort from the 20mm wool pile for an even more enjoyable ride in the Hino cabin.

TowbarHino has developed and introduced

two new 4.5-tonne rated towbar kits to suit a number of 300 Series models.

The product meets Australian Design Rules, requires no welding and clears all dump truck bodies when in a fully raised position.

The two towbar variations are for the standard cab (700mm) and the wide cab (750mm).

Many Hino dealerships and customers were seriously affected by the recent flooding in Queensland and Victoria – and the full economic fallout of the Queensland floods on the trucking industry may take months to become clear.

MORE HINO SERVICE OUTLETSHino has announced the appointment of four new authorised service centres designed to cater for Hino customers in regional and rural Australia.

Two of the new dealers are in northern Queensland, recognising Hino’s increasing profile in that region.

Gladstone Fleet Maintenance is managed by Mark Boyd, while Cooktown Auto Repairs is run by Ray and Katrina Wright.

The other two appointments are in Victoria and Western Australia, with Wren Diesel beginning work on Hino trucks in Wendouree and Kalmech Pty Ltd opening up to Hinos in West Kalgoorlie.

Paul and Judith Wren own and operate Wren Diesel, while Con Wallace manages Kalmech Pty Ltd.

Hino Motor Sales Australia’s Gus Balansky says that the new service centres help fill a specific need for the company.

“It’s pretty obvious that the nature of truck ownership often means that our vehicles will cover a huge number

of kilometres,” said Mr Balansky.“As a result it just doesn’t make

sense to have our customers always returning to the dealership where they bought their vehicles for servicing.

“In an ideal world that would happen, but realistically our trucks travel long distances and are often based a long way from those dealerships.

“This is particularly the case when you are talking about places like Gladstone, Cooktown, Kalgoorlie – long distances are a way of life in those areas.

“Therefore, opening up authorised service outlets in these areas helps to meet the needs of our customers.

“We identified that these four businesses were outstanding operators – companies that we are proud to have associated with Hino.

“They meet the geographic needs and operating standards of Hino – and we look forward to working together to build a very strong and long-lasting relationship.”
