Toyota forklifts one part of the package for Asia-Pacific WarehousingA specialist warehousing, distribution and supply chain business in Melbourne’s western suburbs has relied on Toyota forklifts since its inception, and recently received an unexpected bonus when purchasing its latest forklift.Asia-Pacific Warehousing managing director Rohan Meegama says he has used Toyota forklifts exclusively since establishing the business in 2008, and currently runs an all-Toyota fleet of nine forklifts at its headquarters at Truganina.

“I’d had positive experiences with Toyota forklifts before, so it made sense to stick with what you know and trust,” Mr Meegama said. “We’re all extremely happy with our Toyota forklifts and they’ve never let us down.”

Mr Meegama’s latest Toyota forklift purchase, a battery-electric three-wheel 7FBE18, came after the company opened a new satellite warehouse to cater for a new business opportunity.

“After opening the new warehouse we had to consider how best to manage our forklift resources across the two sites. At one point I thought we might need another gas-powered forklift to unload containers and another reach truck for racking, but after talking to our TMHA sales manager it was brought to

my attention that the 7FBE18 forklift could do both,” he said.

Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) area sales manager Mike Johns said it was a good example of the diverse range of Toyota equipment available.

“It was an economical and convenient outcome for them,” Mr Johns said. “The 7FBE18 is a lightweight and highly manoeuvrable forklift that is able to make pivot turns, so was perfect for their requirements. The warehouse it will operate in is relatively small so there was no need for a larger, higher payload forklift or one with a high mast.”

And much to Mr Meegama’s delight, the decision to purchase the new 7FBE18 forklift came with an unexpected bonus.

“When I got the call to say we had won a new car I was thrilled. I was very surprised and happy to hear the news … it was a real bonus and we’re very pleased all-round,” he said.

As it turns out Asia-Pacific Warehousing is no stranger to Toyota’s cars, utes and SUVs.

“We already had a fleet of Toyota vehicles for our staff, including a HiLux, two Yaris – which has now become three – two Camrys and a RAV 4, with another HiLux soon to join the fleet as well.

“We’ve always been happy with the Toyotas. Just like the forklifts they are comfortable, easy to use and their reliability means they never let you down,” Mr Meegama said.

In an example of the broader ‘One Toyota’ offering that covers a range of business needs, all company vehicles are financed through Toyota Financial Services.

Asia-Pacific Warehousing is a family owned and operated business that provides a comprehensive range of warehousing, distribution and supply chain services, including wharf transport, storage, handling and distribution.

Toyota Material Handling lifts market share to record heightsToyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) has secured its highest market share on record to take the number one position in the Australian forklift market for the seventh consecutive year.TMHA delivered over 4,500 forklifts in 2015, up 2.3 per cent on the previous year, resulting in its highest ever market share of 37.5 per cent.

The official Australian Industrial Truck Association (AITA) industry sales results show a total of 12,144 forklifts sold in 2015, an 11.6 per cent drop on the previous year.

For the 29th year in a row TMHA remains the number one manufacturer of internal combustion engine powered counter-balance forklifts with a dominant market share of 42.2 per cent.

TMHA claimed number one position for forklift sales in New South Wales, Victoria,

Queensland, Western Australia and Tasmania.

In the battery-electric forklift market TMHA achieved a 34.3 per cent market share.

Internal combustion engine powered forklifts accounted for 41.3 per cent of the market, with battery-electric powered units now making 58.7 per cent of the total.

TMHA executive vice president and COO Steve Takacs said the results show the resilience of the Toyota brand in a declining market.

“As always we are very proud of TMHA’s growth in market share, made even more exceptional in 2015 given the overall decline

in numbers nationally.

“We have also increased on volume over

2014, selling over 100 more units than at the

same time last year,” Mr Takacs said.

“As the industry moves towards a more

environmentally sustainable outlook, I am

confident that the trend towards battery-

electric units will become a much stronger

force in the industry.

“We will release even more battery-powered

options in 2016 and we look forward to further

solidifying our place as number one,” Mr

Takacs said.

Toyota brings hybrid performance to Corolla Toyota will bring the added appeal of hybrid technology to Australia’s favourite car with the mid-year launch of a Corolla hybrid hatch.

The new hybrid car is expected to use around one-third less fuel* while producing similar power to the already efficient petrol-only Corolla hatch with its Multidrive S automatic transmission.

Corolla hybrid hatch will be introduced as a well-specified single grade, expanding the local company’s Hybrid Synergy Drive offerings to a fifth model following Prius, Prius c, Prius v and Camry.

Premium features will include satellite navigation#, Toyota Link connected mobility^, dual-zone automatic air-conditioning and bi-LED headlamps.

Toyota Australia’s executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the company’s full hybrid technology is established as a mainstream powertrain choice.

“The combination of Toyota’s hybrid technology and Australia’s best-selling car gives us a unique opportunity to broaden the market appeal of both,” Mr Cramb said.

“Corolla hybrid hatch will offer all the advantages of Australia’s favourite car, coupled with the hybrid system’s established performance, reliability, durability and exceptionally low running costs.

“This addition to the Corolla range will be fun to drive - and fun to own with fuel economy and emissions that are superior to its direct competitors, especially diesel.

“There is enormous potential for the hybrid Corolla as shown by its success in western Europe where hybrid versions account for more than 50 per cent of all Auris (Corolla hatch) sales. In fact, it attracts more sales than any other hybrid in that market.”

Australia’s best-selling hybrid vehicle is Camry with 5,881 sales last year, an increase of 11.2 per cent over the previous year.

The Corolla Hybrid hatch will be fitted with a Euro 5 compliant 73kW 1.8-litre petrol engine mated to a 60kW electric motor and driven through a continuously variable automatic transmission.

Combined system output of 100kW is achieved with almost Prius-like fuel economy while generating low oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and virtually zero particulate matter emissions.

A selectable electric-vehicle mode will enable the Corolla hybrid hatch to be driven for up to two kilometres at speeds of up to around 45km/h with zero tailpipe emissions, depending on the level of battery charge and driving conditions.

Toyota introduces latest 8-Series forklift Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) has released its newest addition to the 8-Series forklift range, the three-wheeled counterbalance battery-electric Toyota 8FBE.The smallest counterbalance forklift in the Toyota range, the compact Toyota 8FBE has been introduced to meet the needs of customers who demand excellent manoeuvrability and effi ciency and the highest safety standards.

The new Toyota 8FBE replaces the market-leading Toyota 7FBE and brings with it a number of key safety and operational features to make it safer, more effi cient and more durable.

Improvements made to the System of Active Stability (SAS) include new Automatic Vehicle-Speed Control and Automatic Turn-Speed Control.

Automatic Vehicle-Speed Control manages the forklift’s speed, acceleration and deceleration according to lift height and load weight, assisting with stability in transporting loads and preventing lost loads.

Automatic Turn-Speed Control regulates the forklift’s turning speed according to lift height and weight as well as desired turning radius, providing stable turning and reducing the chance of a vehicle tip-over.

These all-new features join an already impressive list of standard safety and stability technology, including active mast front-tilt angle, active mast tilt speed control, automatic fork-levelling control and active steering synchroniser.

New motors and controllers in the Toyota 8FBE increase operating time by an outstanding 20 per cent in standard mode compared with the Toyota 7FBE*.

The Toyota 8FBE is water resistant equivalent to IPX4, allowing it to comfortably function outdoors without the risk of damage from splashing water. The ability to operate the Toyota 8FBE outdoors makes it one of the most versatile forklifts on the market.

TMHA national sales and product manager Dean Watson said the new 8FBE forklift suits a wide range of applications.

“Toyota has strategically designed the new 8FBE to be one of our most versatile forklifts yet. Our engineers have worked hard to ensure the latest addition to the 8-Series line-up lives up to the high standard set by the 7FBE,

a long-time favourite of many of our customers,” Mr Watson said.

“Our slogan for this model is ‘Stronger for longer, inside and out’, which sums it up well. With this model companies are able to take the 8FBE to more places, and put it to work all day without worrying if it gets a bit wet, or having to swap batteries mid-shift.

“As the smallest counterbalance forklift in our range it packs quite a punch in all aspects of operation, and we’re very excited to see how it performs in the market,” Mr Watson said.

The three-wheeled design boasts the same lateral stability as its four-wheeled counterparts, while the double rear tyres provide stable travel, turning and load handling as well as greater rated load capacity at high mast heights.

Ergonomic improvements include a large assist grip with a low and wide step for easy access.

An Operator Restraint System (ORS) Seat is standard, with 150mm of forward and backward adjustability for a comfortable operating posture.

A lattice-designed overhead guard provides excellent upward visibility, and optimal mast width and hose layout ensure unobstructed forward visibility. A small-diameter steering wheel and strategically placed display provide improved visibility of the fork tips.

An optional rear assist grip offers comfortable operation in reverse and the integrated horn button allows the operator to easily alert pedestrians of the forklift’s presence. An optional rear-facing blue light is also available as a visual hazard warning.

A new optional shock sensor detects collision impact to the forklift and warns the operator by visual indicator and sound. Warnings are only able to be cleared by a manager, helping to prevent overly harsh operation.

For multi-operator uses, an optional PIN-code entry system prevents use by unauthorised persons and also allows keyless operation and registration of preferred settings for different operators.

*Comparison of operating times on Toyota operating cycle for 8FBE against 7FBE 1.5 tonne forklift models with same battery capacity. Assumes the forklift is operated in 55% of total working hours.

Toyota forklifts provide blueprint for successA leading not-for-profi t forklift training provider has relied on the reliability and functionality of Toyota forklifts since the organisation was founded a decade ago.Blueprint Employment and Training now operates a fl eet of Toyota electric forklifts at its fully equipped facilities at Underwood, south of Brisbane.

Blueprint Training Operations Manager Angie Rue said the decision to partner with Toyota forklifts supplied by the local Toyota Material Handling Australia branch was a simple one.

“Although we started small with only one forklift we were looking to engage with a major supplier that we could call on as we grew,” she said. “Our training manager also had good experiences with Toyota forklifts, going right back to his days learning to drive on one as an apprentice.”

Reliability, quality service and equipment that was competitively priced and suitable for learners were all top of mind for the fl edgling training provider.

“Toyota met our criteria better than others, and we received great service from our sales

rep straight off the bat - which has carried right through to now.

“Personal interaction with Toyota Material Handling Australia sales and service staff has always been key. The service staff are helpful and explain everything to us and our account manager never fails to come through for us when we need to call on him.

“Toyota also offers a wide range of forklifts which is good for us as our needs have changed over time.”

Blueprint’s electric Toyota forklift fl eet currently includes a 7FBE18 three-wheel and two 7FB18 four-wheel counterbalance battery-electric forklifts, a BT OME100M order picker forklift, a Toyota 6FBRE16 reach forklift and a BT LWE180 electric pallet jack.

Over the years the Toyota forklifts have proven well suited to the training environment.

“Our students fi nd them easy to manoeuvre

and control, and they like the visibility they

provide,” Ms Rue said. “Another advantage

for us is that they’re popular in the industry so

our students know they are operating a forklift

they are likely to encounter once they enter

the workforce.”

Blueprint’s relationship with Toyota extends

beyond the training fl oor.

“We also have Toyota company cars - a

HiLux, a Corolla and a Yaris - for similar reasons to the forklifts: they’re reliable, economical to run, and service and repair costs are reasonable.”

Blueprint Employment and Training is a not for profi t registered training provider that specialises in training in warehousing operations, logistics and load-shifting equipment. Training is conducted at its fully equipped training centre or for customers at their premises.

New motors and drivers have been adopted to improve operating time. This achieves operating time of 20% longer,* contributing to a further enhancement of work effi ciency.

Shock sensor OPT

This detects collision impact on the forklift and warns by visual indicator and sound. (Warnings can be cleared only by a manager.) This helps to prevent overly harsh operation and helps reduce maintenance costs.

Through quality engineering and strategic positioning of motors and controllers, the new 8FBE forklift achieves a high water resistance rating of IPX4, meaning it can work as comfortably outside as it does inside. This makes it one of the most versatile forklifts on the market.

The shape of the counterweight has been changed and its sides extended to reduce the risk of collision damage during turns.

If the operator is not in the normal operating position, travel power is interrupted and load-handling operations are stopped.

Emergency Power Shut-downIn the event of an emergency, pressing this button switches off all power sources. A simple twist release allows the truck to restart. When the accelerator or brake

pedal is released while stopped on a grade, the forklift stops and then descends at a controlled, constant speed. This helps to ensure smooth operation and starts on slopes.

Accelerator releaseWhen the accelerator is released, this collects energy in the battery. It also helps achieve smoother deceleration.

Power-keep functionThis feature keeps load-handling and travel performance as the battery charge gets low, allowing continuing effi cient operation.

Brake regenerationWhen the brake is activated, the energy is recovered in the battery. This also helps to extend brake life.

Auto power-off functionThis feature supports energy savings by automatically switching off the power after the operator leaves the forklift for a specifi c period of time.

Power-select functionBoth travel and load-handling performance can be customised. This provides an optimal balance of performance and operating time.

Switchback RegenerationDuring switchback, the energy is recovered in the battery. This also contributes to smooth and quick switchback operation.

ELECTRIC POWERED FORKLIFT

Smooth Toyota forklifts for cold-climate fruit growersA leading grower of apples and cherries relies on a fl eet of Toyota battery-electric forklifts at its orchards and packing sites.Bonny Glen Fruits, based near Mount Canobolas in Orange, NSW, is a family-based business that sells fruit nationally and exports to China.

It has six Toyota 1.8-tonne payload forklifts, including three at its packing facility on Canobolas Road.

Managing director Bernard Hall said he bought the company’s fi rst Toyota forklift in 2001, one year after the business was founded, and has continued buying Toyota forklifts ever since.

“We bought our fi rst Toyota forklift from the (then) local agent and haven’t bought any other make since,” he said.

“We still have the original forklift and commissioned our latest Toyota just six weeks ago. These days, we have a Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) branch in Orange, with a really customer-focused manager in Richard Bopping who ensures we receive good service.”

Bernard Hall regularly operates his Toyota forklifts and said the qualities he most

appreciates in them are reliability and smooth operation.

“They’re smooth, comfortable, reliable and user friendly, as well as being powerful and manoeuvrable and having important safety features,” he said.

“The biggest thing is smoothness. They’re quite precise to operate and there’s no jolting or noise when you go over bumps.”

TMHA Orange branch manager Richard Bopping said Bonny Glen Fruits had been a valued Toyota customer for more than a decade.

“This family business is thriving in tough economic conditions through good management and marketing, taking advantage of the large Chinese marketplace for their fresh produce,” he said.

“Toyota’s strength in the Australian forklift market place means we can offer factory branch support in key regions like the central west of New South Wales.

“That level of service and local-branch support

is a key reason customers give for choosing

and remaining with Toyota.”

TMHA offers a comprehensive range of three

and four-wheel Toyota battery electric forklifts,

all with the proven performance, reliability and

operability of alternating current (AC) power

technology.

Ergonomic features include a four-way

adjustable suspension seat and rack and

pinion hydrostatic power steering, while

operator safety is enhanced by features like

the Toyota System of Active Stability.

Bernard and his brother Tim learned the ropes

of fruit growing while working at their father’s

orchard on the outskirts of Orange before

Bernard founded his own business in 2000.

The company’s four orchards in the Orange

region, all at an altitude of around 1000

metres, grow seven varieties of cherries and

eight varieties of apples. The produce is sold

into chain stores, wholesale markets, at the

farm gate and is also exported.

Bidvest Australia, which runs a fleet of over 400 trucks in all states and territories Australia-wide, has renewed its contract with Hino Motor Sales Australia for the third year running.

The renewal will add another 40 Hino trucks to its fleet during 2015-16, including models from the 300, 500 and 700 Series ranges. These include 300 Series Hybrids and the recently launched 500 Series FE 1426 Auto models.

Driver comfort, reduced vehicle downtime and overall value have prompted a leading wholesale food service and produce supplier to continue building its fleet with Hino trucks.

The 500 Series FE 1426 Auto, with its J07E

engine, combines a class-leading 260HP (191kW) and 794Nm matched to the Allison 2500 series automatic transmission.

The Hino 300 Series Hybrid features a Euro 5 and EVV compliant N04C diesel engine matched to an auxiliary electric motor, which assists in significantly reducing exhaust tailpipe emissions and fuel consumption compared with a conventional diesel-engine truck.

Bidvest Category Manager for Services, Harris Tran, said Hino trucks were the best fit for the business due to the vehicle quality and

innovation, and also the service they receive from Hino Australia.

“Our drivers spend a good proportion of their lives in these trucks, so we need to supply them with something comfortable,” Mr Tran said.

“Hino trucks have very comfortable seats and Bluetooth connectivity, as well as comprehensive safety equipment to help meet OHS requirements.

“We also invest in two-pedal transmissions on all vehicles up to eight pallets; they’re easy to drive and remove the need for specially trained drivers for manual transmissions.”

Mr Tran also noted the reliability Bidvest has experienced with Hino.

“The trucks spend six to 14 hours a day on the road - reducing downtime is important and they have been great.”

Value for money and good service from Hino Australia were also deciding factors in Bidvest’s continued Hino purchases.

“Hino have been very attentive and easy to deal with. They’ve provided vehicles that suit our needs and are great value for money,” Mr Tran said.

Bidvest was established in 1995 and employs over 2,500 people in 55 branches nationwide.

Bidvest is a one-stop supply solution distributing wholesale food, packaging, disposables and hygiene products, fresh produce and meat to the food service and catering industry; with an extensive range including over 56,000 food service products.

Toyota forklift challenge raises safety awareness The fi nal of the Toyota Forklift Challenge at Perth’s Market City saw 10 of the market’s best forklift operators represent their respective companies and compete for prizes while helping to raise awareness of workplace safety.

Held on 16 October, the 10 fi nalists navigated a course designed to simulate a range of activities typical of a forklift driver’s normal working day. The contestants were awarded points for demonstrating safe forklift driving techniques while negotiating the course, rather than just how quickly they could complete it.

The fi nal was won by Kirstie Downie from WA Crates - the fi rst female entrant in the Toyota Forklift Challenge which is now in its second year.

Ms Downie received a $500 Coles/Myer gift card for taking fi rst place. Second placing and a $250 gift card went to Charles Spargo of Bullfrog International, while third-placegetter Taylor Grant from Etherington took home a $100 gift card.

“Safety is our number one priority and it’s pleasing to see the keen interest from the audience and participants in this event,” said Perth Market Authority CEO Stephen Ward.

“I’d like to congratulate the winners; it’s a great achievement to be crowned Market City’s best forklift driver for 2015.”

Toyota Material Handling Australia WA branch manager Lance Cross said the second edition of the challenge was a great success and proved to be an enjoyable way to get the workplace safety message across where it really counts.

“Initiatives like the Toyota Forklift Challenge are a practical way to get all the drivers thinking about workplace safety, not just the 10 fi nalists,” Mr Cross said.

“All the tenants and staff here at Perth Market City have really embraced the event. We put on a sausage sizzle and hundreds of staff came down to have a look and cheer on their respective teammates.”

Toyota Forklift Challenge fi nalists used the Toyota 8-Series 8FG18 counterbalance forklift during the competition.

The design and safety features of Toyota’s

versatile 8-Series include Automatic Fork

Levelling Control to level the forks during

loading, ergonomically designed controls

and smooth, quiet operation from the Toyota

engine.

Select 8-Series forklift models also feature

Toyota’s exclusive System of Active Stability

comprising the advanced Active Swing Lock

Cylinder, which can help improve forklift

stability and assist in reducing the potential

for lateral tip-overs.

Toyota Forklift Challenge entrants registered

by completing a questionnaire regarding

safe forklift driving habits, with the top 10

respondents going through to compete in the

fi nal.

Both the questionnaire and practical round

were overseen and judged by workplace

training course provider TCE Training.
