ABC Transport replaced its seven Toyota 62-8FD25 2.5-tonne, engine-powered counterbalance forklifts with new models at its Darwin depot, one of the company’s three depot locations.

The company runs a successful line haul business between Darwin and Adelaide, servicing businesses and communities - including remote areas of the Northern Territory, Western Australia and South Australia - with general freight requirements.

The seven 8-Series forklifts are used to unload and load freight to ABC Transport’s prime movers, which deliver and collect freight at the Darwin depot on a daily basis.

ABC Transport CEO Jamie Eccleston said Toyota product, which had been in use since the Darwin depot was established in 2006, performed above expectation in an environment where the freight type constantly varied.

“Toyota is the number one forklift for us,” Mr Eccleston said. “We have a lot of freight coming into Darwin every day and it’s always

different because we service a variety of customers.

“The feedback I’ve received from my operators is that the Toyota forklifts are easy to operate and they’re also quick and stable, which means the job gets done efficiently.

“We also see a direct benefit to the business with Toyotas because they run trouble-free and we have the support of really helpful after-sales service.

“We don’t have a lot of time to spare and when we need service they’re in and out quickly, job done,” Mr Eccleston added.

Toyota Material Handling Darwin branch manager Paul Allen said Toyota’s 8-Series forklifts provided the ability to enhance efficiency in busy depots where drivers contended with different types of freight.

“ABC Transport has a great history with Toyota forklifts going back to when the Darwin depot was established,” Mr Allen said. “The 8-Series does everything they need, with a tight turning radius and Automatic

Fork Levelling Control, which is ideal when handling a wide variety of items.

“The safety features also provide peace of mind. Toyota SAS detects instability and corrects it to help prevent tip-overs. This works hand-in-hand with the Active Control Rear Stabiliser, which locks the rear axle if SAS detects any problems.

“Operator Presence Sensing also helps to prevent dangerous movement by preventing the forklift from moving unless the operator is properly seated,” Mr Allen added.

ABC Transport is a family-owned business and was established in 1998 with eight staff to provide freight services to local and remote Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory.

It has achieved significant expansion over the past 15 years, with the establishment of the line haul between Darwin and Adelaide in 2005 and the growth of its workforce to 90.

The company has also accumulated a large fleet of vehicles, including 30 prime movers.

The reliability, user-friendliness, adaptability and after sales service of Toyota forklifts have prompted a burgeoning Australian transport business to update its fleet of 8-Series forklifts without even considering a competitor product.

Sibelco Australia commissioned a new diesel-powered Toyota 72-8FD25 forklift in October at its Charbon Lime plant, near Kandos.

TMHA Orange branch manager Richard Bopping said the Sibelco unit at Charbon is the most “site specifi c” forklift he has delivered in his 13 years with Toyota.

“It’s a great example of the level of customisation available to ensure our forklifts are perfectly matched to the customer’s needs. The diverse range of tasks this forklift undertakes is pretty impressive too,” he said.

Sibelco site maintenance supervisor Andrew Schneider said the new forklift operates on uneven ground in a limestone-processing plant.

“It is the right tool for the right job,” he said. “We asked for a limited-slip differential and wide, puncture-proof tyres, because the plant is located on the side of a hill and the ground

conditions vary.

“Most of the site has a concrete surface, but there is a lot of uneven gravel as well.”

The extensive site-specifi c fi t-out for the machine also includes a custom hydraulic fork positioner, fork vibration damper, analogue weight gauge, dual-element cyclonic air fi lter, a pre cleaner, radiator screen, up-swept exhaust system, high-capacity alternator, high-capacity battery and fi re extinguisher.

Andrew Schneider said the new forklift has joined two older Toyota forklifts on site and performs a wide variety of roles.

“The new Toyota has to be an all-rounder, because it serves as both a general-duties forklift and with the maintenance department. Duties range from loading and unloading trucks to lifting machinery parts with our jib attachment,” he said.

“It loads the bulka bags of lime powder we sell

to mines in the Hunter Valley, unloads steel from

trucks, carries the drums of oil we use to light

the kilns and assists when we disassemble the

fi xed machinery for maintenance.”

Summarising the purchase decision, Andrew

Schneider said the Toyota forklift was the pick

of the bunch and that the specifi cations met all

of Sibelco’s performance, reliability and safety

requirements.

Toyota’s 72-8FD25 forklift is part of Toyota’s

leading-edge 8-Series range of counter-balance

forklifts, which includes gas and diesel models,

as well as full range of battery electric forklifts.

Safety features of the Toyota 8-Series forklift

range include Toyota’s exclusive System of

Active Stability (SAS) and Operator Presence

Sensing (OPS) as standard features.

Toyota Material Handling Australia has specially tailored a 2.5-tonne forklift to meet the specifi c site needs at a New South Wales Lime plant.

TMHA also extended its uninterrupted dominance of the internal-combustion counter-balance forklift market to 28 years, with market share of 35.8 per cent.

The offi cial Australian Industrial Truck Association (AITA) industry sales results for 2014 show TMHA delivered in excess of 4,450 forklifts in 2014.

This represents a total market share of 32.4 per cent, an increase of 3.8 per cent on 2013.

The result was more than 680 forklifts ahead of Toyota’s nearest rival.

Battery-electric forklifts accounted for just over half (50.7 per cent) of Toyota forklift deliveries.

Toyota was number one in forklifts in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and Western Australia.

TMHA executive vice president and COO, Steve Takacs, said the strong results provide

signifi cant momentum going into the new year.

“The strong sales results are pleasing to see, particularly as we start the new year in a strong fi nancial position,” Mr Takacs said.

“Our extensive national TMHA branch network is growing. We recently opened fi ve new branches, with more to follow in response to business growth, and we are recruiting additional technical and management staff.

“We lead the industry with our apprentice program and in-house training, and are currently recruiting a new intake of apprentices for 2015.”

Mr Takacs also said TMHA will release new models into the market this year, one of which being a new range of Toyota 8-Series battery-electric sit down reach trucks.

“It all adds up to another big year for TMHA, and we look forward to maintaining our number

one position in the Australian material handling

market,” Mr Takacs said.

Forklift industry sales results for 2014 show that Toyota Material Handling Australia retained overall national forklift market leadership for the sixth consecutive year.

Toyota 8-series forklift wins international design recognitionToyota’s 8-Series forklift range has been recognised by two prestigious international awards, winning a Special Mention in the German Design Award 2015 and a Good Design Award 2014.

The German Design Award is a highly sought-after prize. To be nominated a product must be recommended by one of the judges or have previously won an international design award.

The Toyota 8-Series is the fi rst forklift to receive a Special Mention in the awards.

The Toyota 8-Series received the Special Mention from a fi eld of 2,250 nominations from around the world. Other Special Mention winners include the Mercedes-Benz C Class, Audi A8 facelift and Vodafone internet router.

The Good Design Award is Japan’s only design evaluation and commendation award, and is contested by companies and designers from around the world.

Earlier this year Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) launched the new 8-Series 3.5 to 8-tonne range, extending its industry-leading forklift safety, fuel-saving

and ergonomic features to all its internal combustion forklifts up to 8-tonne capacity.

Highlights of the range include a new 65kW electronic fuel injection-equipped 3.7-litre LPG engine offering fuel savings of up to 20 per cent compared with the superseded model.

Key safety features include Toyota’s exclusive System of Active Stability, which helps reduce the likelihood of lateral or longitudinal roll-overs.

Other features of the Toyota 8-Series include a redesigned chassis with fully stamped steel plate construction and ergonomic improvements like increased fl oor space and a larger step.

Offi cial fi gures released show Toyota retailed

203,501 vehicles in 2014 to lead the industry

by a substantial margin - well over 97,000

sales ahead of its nearest competitor.

Toyota’s strong result led the Australian

automotive industry to a third consecutive

year of new-vehicle sales above 1.11 million

and the second-highest total on record.

It is the 12th year in a row and the 18th time

overall that Toyota has achieved the highest

level of sales in the Australian new-vehicle

market.

Last year also marks the 10th time Toyota

dealers have delivered more than 200,000

new vehicles to local motorists in a calendar

year.

Toyota’s December 2014 total of 19,015

vehicles delivered to customers was

substantially higher than the combined totals

of its nearest two competitors.

The company’s executive director sales

and marketing Tony Cramb said economic

conditions and new-model launches were

forecast to support similar results for the

industry and for Toyota in 2015.

“Toyota will release at least 10 new or

refreshed models in the space of just one

year” Mr Cramb said.

“The boldest Camry ever - to be launched in the second quarter of 2015 - is the tip of the iceberg in what is shaping up as one of Toyota’s busiest years ever,” he said.

“Increased supply of RAV4, Kluger and Prado will provide Toyota customers with another welcome boost in the booming SUV market.”

Toyota’s 2014 sales tally of 203,501 vehicles translated into a market share of 18.3 per cent; no other company’s share reached double fi gures.

Corolla claimed back-to-back titles as the nation’s best-selling vehicle with sales of 43,735 sedans and hatches - an increase of 0.5 per cent on the previous year and a victory margin of 422 vehicles.

Toyota was the best-selling brand in every

state and territory. It was the only company to

have three vehicles among the top 10 sellers

nationally with HiLux (3rd) and Camry (8th)

joining Corolla in fi rst place.

HiLux recorded its 10th consecutive year as

the best-selling four-wheel-drive vehicle while

its total sales in Australia passed 800,000

since it was introduced in 1971.

Camry marked its 21st year straight as

Australia’s best-selling mid-size car with its

segment share rising to 44.5 per cent. It also

notched up a cumulative local sales tally of

850,000 cars.

Toyota was the top-selling brand in the three

sectors that defi ne the market - selling 92,132

passenger cars, 56,663 SUVs and 54,706

light-commercial vehicles. It was Toyota’s 36th year in succession as market leader in commercial-vehicle sales.

Record demand for RAV4 (up 6.9 per cent to 18,160) and a gain of 10.6 per cent for Prado (16,112) contributed to the industry’s highest-ever SUV sales of 352,347 - the fi rst time SUVs have accounted for more than 30 per cent of the total market.

The Toyota 86 was Australia’s best-selling sports car, bringing to eight the number of Toyota vehicles that led their individual market segments in 2014. The others were Corolla, Camry, LandCruiser 200, HiLux 4x2, HiLux 4x4, HiAce bus and HiAce van.

Tonca Earthmoving rely on Toyota skid steer loaders A second-generation West Australian earthmover has commissioned a new Toyota Huski skid-steer loader, based on the belief that the ability to carry out safe, high-quality work begins with the right choice of equipment.Joe Mammoliti’s new Toyota Huski 5SDK8 skid-steer loader is the third new Huski he has purchased in the last decade for his company, Tonca Earthmoving.

Mr Mammoliti’s father Frank has operated skid-steer loaders for more than half a century. Joe established Tonca Earthmoving when he joined him nearly 15 years ago.

“We’ve built our business reputation on quality work, and that means having quality machinery,” Mr Mammoliti said.

“I bought my first Huski skid-steer loader in 2004 and I’ve had no regrets since,” he said. “The latest Huski 5SDK8 is quick, reliable, easy to operate and comfortable.

“I need reliable machinery to carry out works: I can’t afford to have machinery break down without support,” he said.

“Toyota’s Perth branch is always there to support me, either in the workshop or with the mobile service vans.”

Mr Mammoliti uses the Toyota Huski for a wide range of applications, including residential, commercial, industrial, local government and civil works.

Toyota Material Handling Perth branch manager Lance Cross said having the latest-model skid-steer loader was an important aspect of Tonca Earthmoving’s appeal to clients.

“Joe does a lot of council work, which requires high standards of presentation and safety, and he takes great pride in both,” Mr Cross said.

The 650kg operating load 5SDK8 is the top-selling model in the comprehensive Huski skid steer loader range. Tonca Earthmoving’s latest addition has been well equipped for a variety of

jobs with a standard bucket, rake bucket, brick

forks, Harley/power rake and broom/sweeper.

“Nothing is too much trouble for Toyota Material

Handling, whether it’s dealing with the sales

department or when customising a skid-steer

for optimum safety,” Mr Mammoliti said. “Our

new Huski has a rear-camera system, flashing

light and high-visibility stripes to ensure we

comply with WH&S guidelines.

“Safety and efficiency is paramount in the

earthmoving business and it cannot be achieved

with sub-standard equipment,” he said.

Toyota Material Handling offers a range of Huski

skid-steer loaders to cover a variety of needs,

from ‘mini’ models for limited-access jobs right

up to the 900kg operating load 5SDK11.

Micro Excavations are limited-access Huski site specialists Pioneering earthmoving equipment operator Bernie Carlson will next month bow out of the business, 33 years after creating a company that specialises in limited-accessMr Carlson, 70, founded Gold Coast-based Micro Excavations in 1981 as an owner-operator and grew the business using Toyota Huski skid-steer loaders. He plans to keep operating loaders until the end of November.

Sons Don and Max now run the business, which has six Toyota Huski 4SDK4 and one Toyota 4SDK5 loader. Its most recent acquisition was a new 4SDK4.

Don said the Toyota loaders had been used in an incredible variety of roles over the years.

“We have accessed work areas through buildings and through houses, craned loaders onto high-rise buildings and even helicoptered one into the Bunya Mountains to prepare the footings for a communications tower,” he said.

Grass tyres are fitted to the loaders to ensure to lawns, parks and customers’ driveways aren’t damaged.

In a reversal of the old business adage, Micro Excavations found a market and grew by thinking small.

“Dad’s brother Tony was using small loaders in Sydney and Dad saw the potential when he and Tony moved up here to the Gold Coast,” Don said.

“He bought his first Toyota skid-steer loader soon after founding the business and has been buying them ever since. We have had 30 or more since then.

“We’re still buying Toyota because they’re a good all-round loader, well balanced and reliable. We’ve seen the development of the loaders over the years, and the bright colour scheme looks the part when you work at prestige residential properties.

“In terms of back-up service, we’ve always dealt with the Brisbane operation, first as the Willtrac

dealership and now as a Toyota Material

Handling branch. We get along well with all the

guys in the workshop.”

Area sales manager Syd Williams said he

wished Bernie Carlson all the best in his

retirement.

“Bernie is a great guy and an ‘old-school’

earthmover through and through,” Mr Williams

said. “He pioneered limited-access skid-steer

work on the Gold Coast and he’s been a valued

customer for three decades.”

Don said while his father has continued to

operate machines, having recently turned 70

he’s now had enough. “My brother and I expect

he’ll be asking us for a job now and then. He’s

not the sort of man who can sit around watching

television!”

Three Toyota counterbalance trucks and one powered pallet truck are in contention for a 2015 IFOY Award.

The IFOY Award criteria includes innovative quality, technology, design, ergonomics, handling, safety, cost effectiveness and sustainability.

IFOY Jury chairperson Anita Würmser said 2014 saw the introduction of a number of innovations from various manufacturers.

“Only the best of the best in terms of innovation have made it into the fi nal round,” she said.

The Toyota nominations are for the all-new 8-Series gas-powered forklift in the counterbalance trucks up to 3.5-tonne category, the BT Levio P-series electric pallet truck in the warehouse category, and the Traigo 80 4.0–5.0-tonne electric truck (not available in Australia) and diesel-powered 8-Series 3.5–8.0-tonne in the counterbalance trucks from 3.5-tonne category.

The winner in each category will be decided in March by an international jury and a panel of respected trade journalists and leading logistics media from 13 countries.

Toyota Material Handling Australia’s executive vice president and chief operating offi cer Steve Takacs said the nominations are recognition of the exceptional features and quality found in all Toyota products.

“Nominations for highly regarded awards like IFOY demonstrate the way in which Toyota is respected the world over for the quality, reliability and durability of its material handling equipment,” he said.

All nominated trucks will undergo the IFOY Test and IFOY Innovation Check during the IFOY Test Week, from 20 to 26 February in Osnabruck, Germany.

The IFOY 2015 winners will be announced on 5 May at the BMW Museum in Munich.

The much-anticipated GS F sports sedan combines opulence with the performance of a sports car, and joins the marque’s high-performance ‘F’ line that includes the soon-to-be-launched RC F.

GS F, which is based on the mid-sized GS luxury sedan, breaks new ground for Lexus as the largest vehicle ever offered with an F badge.

It is powered by a naturally-aspirated 5.0-litre V8 producing 348 kilowatts and 527 newton metres of torque, and provides fuel efficiency through the use of Atkinson cycle fuel delivery during narrower throttle openings.

The engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox with manual-shifting capabilities and three modes: Normal, Sport S and Sport S+.

The vehicle’s handling was honed at the Fuji circuit in Japan as well as Germany’s famed Nürburgring.

The GS F features structural reinforcements and an exclusively designed suspension system to match the car’s enhanced output, along with larger tyres (255/35-19 front, and 275/35-19 rear) as well as an upgraded braking

system complete with bright orange callipers.

Lexus’ Torque Vectoring Differential (TVD), also found in the RC F, features three operating modes: Standard (default), providing a balance of agility and firmness; Slalom, emphasising nimble steering response and agility; and Track, which enhances stability during high-speed circuit driving.

The GS F features an enlarged and more pronounced version of Lexus’ trademark ‘spindle’ grille, with a distinctive mesh pattern and large gaping air vents.

Slim canted headlights with the signature Lexus L-shaped daytime running lamps complete the car’s elegant yet dynamic face.

The GS F sits noticeably lower and wider than other GS models, combining with its front fender air outlets and 19-inch alloy wheels to make it instantly recognisable as an F model.

GS F’s cabin gains an F steering wheel and a new electronic instrument cluster that can be configured between four different displays depending on preferred driving style: Normal, Eco, Sport S and Sport S+.

Custom front and rear seats provide the vehicle’s occupants with more lateral support.

GS F chief engineer Yukihiko Yaguchi said vehicles with the ‘F’ designation were created to generate a positive feeling behind the wheel for all drivers.

“With the GS F we wanted to make a special

car that not only would exceed the expectations

of the most discerning driving enthusiast, but

also something that all people can enjoy,” Mr

Yaguchi said.

“In that way, the GS F embraces the virtues of

sound, response and power, the cornerstones
