140 Toyota forklifts help keep Casella Family Brands movingOne of Australia’s largest wine exporters has expanded its material handling fleet to 140 Toyota forklifts nationally to maintain its weekly output of more than two million litres of wine.

Casella Family Brands is based at Yenda, near Griffith in rural New South Wales, and exports its products to 52 countries worldwide. Since 1969 Casella has been Australia’s largest family-owned winery and its major brand [yellow tail] accounts for one-fifth of all bottled wine products leaving Australia.

The 82 forklifts at the Yenda facility are supported by Liftek Griffith on behalf of Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) with an onsite workshop and service technician.

The Toyota forklifts at Yenda range from the popular 2.5-tonne payload 8FG25 to larger 4.5 and 8-tonne payload forklifts. They also have a 15-tonne capacity Toyota 4FD150 with a Bolzoni Auramo side attachment for stacking empty 20 and 40-foot containers. Each 20-

foot container can hold 1100 cartons or about 10,000 litres of wine.

Liftek Griffith founder Vince Staltare hired an additional service technician in 2004 to meet the increased service requirements of Casella Family Brand’s then 36 Toyota forklifts. Vince’s son Chaise is now managing director of the dealership.

Casella Family Brands’ head of distribution Sam McLeod said the quality of the product and after-sales support were key factors in choosing Toyota forklifts.

“Toyota builds a very reliable forklift and our local dealer services our business needs well,” he said. “Currently we have one full-time employee from Liftek Griffith on site five days a week, as well as a 24-hour breakdown

service. At peak periods such as vintage we have a second person come on site to enable all servicing to be completed in set time frames. (Vintage begins mid-January with the first grapes harvested.)

“We also have great support from Chaise Staltare of Liftek Griffith; he is very hands-on with the Casella operations.”

In addition to the 82 Toyota forklifts at the main site in Yenda further units are located at the domestic warehouse, DMR-Rice Mill and Miranda’s. Casella Family Brands winery Peter Lehmann Wines also has six Toyota forklifts in the Barossa Valley, including two battery-electric forklifts and four 2.5-tonne forklifts that were transferred from Yenda.

The Toyota forklifts at Yenda are used

throughout the whole wine-making, bottling and shipping process. “There is always a peak in mid-January for the forklift fleet as we receive the first grapes for vintage,” Mr McLeod said.

Liftek’s Chaise Staltare said his company had expanded in parallel with Casella Family Brands.

“We have grown with Casella Family Brands and have always aimed to offer them service that is second to none. With their continued growth, and need to minimise downtime and maximise safety, we felt there was only one solution and that was to have a workshop onsite for the winery to fully accommodate the service needs of the company,” Mr Staltare said.

“We planned the details with Casella and now have a small, fully equipped workshop at the winery. Prevention is better than cure, and we have a service technician on deck five days a week to keep the Casella forklifts in tip-top condition.

“Having the workshop allows us to carry a wide range of spare parts – more than can be carried in a service van – so forklifts can be back in production more quickly. We also offer a 24-hour breakdown service out of Griffith at night and on weekends.”

Liftek has serviced Griffith and the wider Riverina area since 1995 when Vince Staltare drew on his 15 years’ experience in the

material handling industry to start his own business.

Based on his industry knowledge, hard work and the philosophy that ‘if you look after others they will look after you’, Vince successfully built the business working alongside TMHA

In 1999 Vince’s son Chaise joined the business after completing his automotive qualification where he gained valuable hands-on experience and an insight into the full workings of the business. Chaise now works predominately in the sales and administration areas, further strengthening the vast experience and knowledge Liftek offers.

Today Vince and Chaise are both actively involved in all aspects of the business, with Vince’s valuable industry experience and Chaise’s fresh and innovative ideas and a ‘can do’ attitude creating a recipe for success.

The impressive scale of Casella Family Brand’s operation includes one of the fastest wine bottling lines in the world, capable of processing 36,000 bottles per hour.

The winery site occupies 32 hectares and includes the largest rain and waste-water treatment plant of its type in Australia. The company’s weekly output through Yenda of 2,100,000 litres of wine equates to 3900 pallets or 210 containers.

Achieving Casella Family Brand’s annual wine product volume requires the grapes from 15 to 16,000 hectares of vineyard. Fruit is sourced from premium growing districts including Coonawarra, Wrattonbully, Padthaway, the Barossa and Clare Valleys in South Australia, and the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria.

In 2011 Casella processed close to 10 per cent of Australia’s grape crush.

Tmha caps record year with international award Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) has capped off a record market share year in 2015 by receiving the highest recognition at the recent Toyota Material Handling International (TMHI) distributor awards.

The President’s Award for overall business excellence recognises TMHA as the top distributor in sales and customer support categories, taking into account equipment sales, service and parts performance and overall business profitability.

The award was presented in April by Toyota Material Handling Group global president Mr Kazue Sasaki at the awards ceremony held in the grand ballroom of the Marriot Hotel in Nagoya, Japan.

This is the most prestigious award issued by TMHA’s global parent company and saw it take the number one position ahead of the more than 130 countries that make up the

TMHI region.

TMHA executive vice president and COO Steve Takacs accepted the award on behalf of TMHA and said winning the award was a terrific achievement that recognises the efforts of all TMHA staff.

“Being acknowledged by our parent company for the outstanding service and support we provide to our customers is a great achievement and a fitting reward for the hard work put in by everyone in our business operation,” Mr Takacs said.

“This award comes at a very exciting time for TMHA. We are growing in staff numbers and the business is more viable than ever.

“Strong sales figures in 2015 helped us record our seventh consecutive year as the number one forklift brand in Australia and our highest ever market share.

“In terms of product, this year we’ve already launched a new range of battery-electric Toyota counterbalance forklifts that strengthen our product range, and in the second half of the year we will introduce our first Automated Guided Driverless Forklift to the local market,” he said.

“It all adds up to another year with great potential and we look forward to building on these successes through the remainder of 2016.www.toyota.com.au

Updated Toyota 86 unveiled at New York show

Featuring revised exterior and interior design, as well as suspension and powertrain upgrades, the MY17 86 is scheduled to go on sale in Australia in the fourth quarter of this year.

More aggressive styling is focused on a larger grille, emphasising the car’s low, wide stance.

Re-configured LED headlamps incorporate new indicators, sitting above redesigned fog lamp bezels and a revised bumper. At the rear, there are sports LED tail lamps and a new bumper.

The alloy wheel design has been refreshed, and the 86 logo has shifted to a stand-alone

badge on the front fender, as well as inside the front headlamps.

On the inside, the high-grade GTS features a new, soft-feel ‘Grandlux’ material (reprising the 86 logo) on the instrument panel surround and door trims.

GTS drivers will also enjoy new seating material with silver stitching, as well as a steering wheel with integrated audio controls.

Under the skin, a revised suspension tune focuses on shock absorber and spring rates, while on manual variants additional performance comes from a gear ratio change as well as increases* to torque (+9Nm) and peak power (+4kW), with Hill Start Assist

Control (HAC)# helping prevent the car from rolling back on steep hills.

Toyota executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said since launching here in mid-2012, the front-engine, rear-wheel drive 86 has captured the imagination of local car enthusiasts.

“With sales in excess of 16,000** units in Australia to date, the 86 has been a phenomenal success,” Mr Cramb said.

“A pure focus on dynamic response and driver engagement has struck a chord with its growing fan base, and this 86 update is sure to add further fuel to that fire,” he said.

An updated version of Australia’s best-selling sports car, the Toyota 86, was unveiled at this year’s New York International Auto Show, which ran from March 25 to April 3.

Toyota in the limelight at forklift performanceForklifts may not be the first thing you’d associate with a contemporary dance performance, but earlier this year Toyota’s newest forklift truck featured in a breathtaking dance-acrobatic performance on Queensland’s Gold Coast as part of the Bleach Festival.

A battery-electric Toyota 8FBE forklift starred in Forklift by acclaimed Melbourne-based performance company KAGE in four free performances in March at Kurrawa Surf Lifesaving Club.

The 30-minute piece made its world premiere at the Sydney Festival in 2014 before being presented at Arts Centre Melbourne. It had a European premiere in Helsinki, Finland, in May 2015.

Devised in Australia and developed at Cirko – Center for New Circus in Helsinki, the dance-circus performance featured contortion, aerial acrobatics and original music.

It combined the talents of contortionist and hand balancer Anna Murray, circus and theatre performer Nicci Wilks and dancer and contortionist Amy Macpherson.

“Forklift re-imagines the possibilities of machinery into a playful and dangerous sphere, contrasting the lightness of limbs with hard edges and heavy metal,” said KAGE’s Artistic Director and Forklift Director Kate Denborough.

“The performance was wonderfully received when it premiered in Australia as well as in Europe, so we were excited to bring it to the Gold Coast as part of the Bleach Festival.”

Toyota Material Handling Australia’s

executive vice president and chief operating

officer Steve Takacs said Forklift was the

company’s first on-stage involvement with the

performing arts.

“We were thrilled to be part of an edgy piece

of dance-theatre that returned to Australia

after a successful overseas tour,” he said.

“The workplace is, of course, quite different

to the theatre. However, there can be art in

material handling. It was a joy to watch a

top-notch operator manoeuvring a forklift in a

confined area,” Mr Takacs said.

Winery reaps the benefits of Toyota forklifts A boutique winery on Victoria’s Mornington peninsula is reaping the benefits of upgrading to a new Toyota forklift with a custom-built attachment that delivers significant benefits in the busy harvesting season.

Ocean Eight Winery general manager and winemaker Mike Aylward said the decision was recently made to upgrade to the new Toyota 8FBN25 8-Series battery-electric forklift after the winery’s needs had been well served by a much older Toyota forklift.

“We had a great older forklift that could be described as a relic,” he said. “It gave us an excellent run but at 30 years of age it was time to move on.”

Mr Aylward said Ocean Eight’s forklift is used for general warehouse duties but also takes on a demanding and critical role during harvesting.

“The forklift is very much used in the processing side of our winery. Fruit is delivered in 500kg bins which the forklift lifts and then rotates into our grape press or grape destemmer. As we process around 90 tonnes of fruit a year it is vital we have a reliable forklift doing this work.”

Where previously carrying out these two tasks meant a time-consuming process of attaching or detaching the bin tipper, the new Toyota forklift

has been modified so that it can be quickly fitted and removed as required.

“This adaptability is a real plus when we are in the heat of harvest,” Mr Aylward said.

“We only get one crack at it and when the grapes are ready to be harvested they must come off straight away. There is no time to waste when making high quality wine.”

Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) Melbourne area sales manager Grant Owen said the ability to modify the Toyota forklift to meet Ocean Eight’s specific needs was a pleasant surprise for the winery.

“When Mr Aylward first approached us about upgrading to a new rental unit he wasn’t aware that we could adapt the forklift to suit the winery’s particular requirements.

“After we assessed their needs our TMHA engineers created a quick release mechanism for the bin tipper attachment, so the forklift retains its full range of features with the attachment on or off.

“It was previously a difficult process to swap between the bin tipper and normal forklift duties, and by being able to quickly remove the bin tipper they’ve increased the forklift’s capacity from 1.3 to 2.3 tonnes, so they’re very happy that they can now get the full range of uses they need from their forklift.”

Mr Aylward said the experience of dealing with the TMHA Melbourne branch has been a positive one.

“The service and efficiency of the Toyota team in Melbourne has been great. While we’re a small business and our needs are covered for now, I would definitely recommend Toyota forklifts to others,” he said.

Chris and Gail Aylward began winemaking on the Mornington Peninsula in 1997 when they established the Kooyong Winery. After it was sold in 2004 son Mike joined them to form Ocean Eight at the family’s property in Shoreham.

Tmha welcomes latest apprentice intake Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) has secured its highest market share on record to take the number one position in the Australian forklift market for the seventh consecutive year.

The latest intake of Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) apprentices were inducted at the company’s Moorebank headquarters in Sydney on Wednesday March 30.

The seven apprentices were drawn from the TMHA network around the country and accompanied by mentors from their respective TMHA branches.

TMHA national technical advisor and trainer Gerry Larney said the company received more than 600 applications from around the country in this year’s apprentice drive.

“This is one of the biggest by far since we began our apprentice program back in 2005.

“The latest intake brings the number of apprentices currently training around the country to 37, not including the

10 apprentices who completed their apprenticeship in the fi rst quarter of 2016,” Mr Larney said.

As part of the induction the apprentices were given presentations on Toyota values, company policies and expectations, safety procedures, the history of Toyota and Toyota Production System demonstrations.

The apprentices met with members of the senior TMHA management team, before being presented with their tools of trade.

“TMHA recognises the apprentice program is a real investment in our future. After all, today’s apprentices are tomorrow’s technicians,” Mr Larney said.

“We instigated the annual apprentice intake over a decade ago to ensure we have a

strong skills base to support us as our business grows.”

“We also pioneered specialist TAFE training for Australia’s forklift technicians.

“As we celebrate our seventh consecutive year as Australia’s top forklift brand we remain well aware of the importance of having a skilled and knowledgeable team of technicians ready to provide high quality back-up for the diverse range of Toyota Material Handling equipment,” Mr Larney said.

TMHA supports the training and development of its forklift technicians and apprentices by holding an annual National Skills Contest aimed at keeping them at the cutting-edge of industry standards.

New motors and drivers have been adopted to improve operating time. This achieves operating time of 20% longer,* contributing to a further enhancement of work effi ciency.

Shock sensor OPT

This detects collision impact on the forklift and warns by visual indicator and sound. (Warnings can be cleared only by a manager.) This helps to prevent overly harsh operation and helps reduce maintenance costs.

Through quality engineering and strategic positioning of motors and controllers, the new 8FBE forklift achieves a high water resistance rating of IPX4, meaning it can work as comfortably outside as it does inside. This makes it one of the most versatile forklifts on the market.

The shape of the counterweight has been changed and its sides extended to reduce the risk of collision damage during turns.

If the operator is not in the normal operating position, travel power is interrupted and load-handling operations are stopped.

Emergency Power Shut-downIn the event of an emergency, pressing this button switches off all power sources. A simple twist release allows the truck to restart. When the accelerator or brake

pedal is released while stopped on a grade, the forklift stops and then descends at a controlled, constant speed. This helps to ensure smooth operation and starts on slopes.

Accelerator releaseWhen the accelerator is released, this collects energy in the battery. It also helps achieve smoother deceleration.

Power-keep functionThis feature keeps load-handling and travel performance as the battery charge gets low, allowing continuing effi cient operation.

Brake regenerationWhen the brake is activated, the energy is recovered in the battery. This also helps to extend brake life.

Auto power-off functionThis feature supports energy savings by automatically switching off the power after the operator leaves the forklift for a specifi c period of time.

Power-select functionBoth travel and load-handling performance can be customised. This provides an optimal balance of performance and operating time.

Switchback RegenerationDuring switchback, the energy is recovered in the battery. This also contributes to smooth and quick switchback operation.

New and used Toyota forklifts help QLD charityA Queensland not-for-profi t charity providing food relief for families in need is benefi ting from new and refurbished material handling equipment supplied by Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA).Located at Loganholme and Hillcrest hear Brisbane, Lighthouse Care recently purchased a fully refurbished 7FBE20 model to replace an old forklift from another brand and soon after purchased a new Toyota 6FBRE16 reach truck to use at its busy warehouse. Their existing 6FBRE16 reach truck has been retained as a back-up for busy periods.

Lighthouse Care co-founder Ron Hill says when the time came to upgrade their existing forklifts they were happy to continue their association with Toyota.

“We had our old Toyota reach truck set up at our warehouse in our large drive-in freezer. We were really happy with it so we approached the local TMH branch about purchasing another,” Mr Hill said.

“Both the new and refurbished forklifts are

great to drive and operate and we’re really pleased with the service and support we’ve received from TMHA.

“It was quite a lengthy process as we had to wait for approval on a government grant to fi nance the new forklift, and TMHA were very patient and helpful throughout.”

TMHA area sales manager Daniel Ford said it was very satisfying to be able to assist Lighthouse Care in providing its much-needed service to the local community.

“Their existing equipment was ready for replacement and it was very satisfying to work with Ron and the rest of the volunteers and staff at Lighthouse Care to provide a cost-effective solution to their material handling needs.

“It also serves as a great example of the quality and reliability of our refurbished

forklifts, which provide an economical

alternative to purchasing new equipment for

those who place lighter demands on their

equipment than large warehouses.

“Our refurbished forklifts are carefully chosen

from our ex-rental fl eet and each one goes

through a very thorough check. All worn parts

are replaced and they are stripped, washed

and cleaned. Any damaged panels are

replaced or repaired and are repainted,” Mr

Ford said.

Lighthouse Care was established in 2004

and originally distributed free bread to

disadvantaged communities. It has since

developed into a large volunteer-led

organisation that provides 40,000 food

parcels and assists over 60,000 families in

need each year.

Toyota introduces automated forklift range Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) has announced the introduction of a range of Automatic Guided Vehicle (AGV) forklifts that will begin arriving in August this year.

Toyota’s range of BT-branded AGV forklifts contain its unique Autopilot technology that provides reliable and accurate driverless operation for transporting, stacking or picking. The Autopilot system can function independently and alongside manually operated equipment.

For added fl exibility the Autopilot-equipped forklifts can also be operated manually if required.

TMHA national sales and product manager - automation Tony Raggio said one of the advantages of Toyota’s AGV range is its similarity with the existing range of BT pallet trucks, order pickers and reach forklifts.

“Our AGV-enabled forklifts are essentially the same as their existing manual counterparts, with the only difference being the addition of Toyota’s Autopilot technology,” Mr Raggio said.

“This means operators can enjoy all the reliability, safety and durability benefi ts expected of Toyota forklifts with the added benefi ts of automation - while servicing and maintenance procedures remain unchanged.”

The key advantages of AGV forklifts include increased safety with a reduced risk of accidents, smooth workfl ow and greater reliability, and improved effi ciency.

“We envisage the AGV forklift range making real productivity improvements in busy warehouse, storage or production environments where repetitive movements are common,” Mr Raggio said.

“Another advantage is that, as a Toyota-backed product we offer full nationwide back-up and support services - the same as for any other forklift or other item of material handling equipment.

“AGV customers in Europe are reporting signifi cant increases in productivity as soon as they take up the technology, and we expect the ROI for the AGV forklifts to be between 12 and 36 months,” Mr Raggio said.

An award-winning Sydney equipment hire company has taken delivery of 15 new rental-ready Hino 300 Series trucks for its fl eet of hire vehicles.

Camden Hire’s new Hino 300 Series 616 automatic light-duty trucks are able to be driven with a car licence.

Purchased from Adtrans Hino at Smeaton Grange, the trucks are fi tted with Westrucks FRP Pan Bodies and Dhollandia tail lifts for easy loading and access.

Michael Lindsay of Adtrans Hino assisted Camden Hire with the procurement and customisation of the fl eet of 300 Series trucks.

“With our experience supplying trucks to other rental fl eets, we suggested a suite of

accessories for each truck to ensure it would provide the best experience for Camden Hire customers,” Mr Lindsay said.

“We’ve helped ‘rentalise’ these vehicles to benefi t customers and Camden Hire.”

Camden Hire founder Mike Scarce OAM had previous experience with Hino trucks which has now been rekindled with Adtrans Hino.

“We had Hino trucks in our fl eet years ago and were delighted when we realised we now have a Hino dealership in such close proximity to our headquarters in Smeaton Grange,” Mr Scarce said.

“We’re currently in talks with Adtrans to add light-duty tippers to our range of vehicles as well.”

Accessories on Camden Hire’s new trucks include heavy duty seat covers and screw-in fl oor mats, tail light protectors, ‘quacker’ reverse alarm, handbrake alarm and a chain on the fuel cap to prevent fuel loss.

Attention to detail for customers includes height stickers on the windscreen to assist renters unfamiliar with driving taller vehicles and diesel stamps on the single fuel tank.

The trucks are also fi tted with a reversing camera which is standard on all Hino 300 Series models.

Camden Hire was established in 1984 and services greater metropolitan Sydney and beyond, specialising in building, excavation and landscape equipment.

Toyota huski the right choice for landscaping contractorA busy Victorian landscaping and construction contractor has relied on Toyota Huski skid-steer loaders for most of its 10-year history.Calder Landscaping and Construction purchased a Huski 4SDK8 and a 4SDK5 model not long after the company was founded in 2006. In November last year the 4SDK8 was traded in and new 5SDK5 and 5SDK8 skid-steers were purchased, bringing its current fl eet of Toyota Huski skid-steer loaders to three.

For director Mark Bullows there was never a question of which brand of skid-steer loader he would use in the business.

“I had experience with other skid-steer loaders in previous jobs and I preferred the Toyota Huskis,” he said. “It was a simple matter of sticking with what I know best. Based on past experience I knew they were tough, dependable and wouldn’t let me down.”

Mr Bullows said the simplicity of operation and reliability of the Toyota Huskis are their real strength.

“Wha I like most about them is that they’re

simple and you can rely on them to get the job done. Some of the other brands seem to lose their way by trying to over complicate things.

“With the Huskis I’ve never had any problems like I did with other brands,” he said.

Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) Victoria area sales manager Thomas Machar said the uncomplicated nature of the Huskis makes them the ideal choice for getting the job done with fewer issues and costly breakdowns.

“Our customers love the fact that the Toyota Huskis are comfortable, reliable and don’t have complicated electronics and computer operation. They’re a solid, dependable and well-engineered workhorse, and the fact that 80 percent of our sales come from repeat customers like Calder is proof that they deliver,” Mr Machar said.

Mr Bullows said the service and maintenance he receives from his local TMHA branch is

also a good reason to stick with the Huskis.

“Nothing’s a problem for them,” he said. “One of the service technicians lives near me, and if I need him to come over at 6.30am to look at something he’s always there. Any issues are sorted out quickly and without any hassle. Equipment downtime is costly in this business so having quality backup to rely on is a must.”

Calder Landscaping and Construction’s three Huskis are primarily used to prepare new housing estates for a number of large builders in Victoria.

Given they operate on paved and concrete paths as well as dirt, the two new 5-series Huskis were fi tted with heavy duty tyres before delivery.

“Working on building sites means you can get a lot of fl at tyres, but with these heavy duty tyres that’s hardly ever a problem. I probably get about one-tenth of the problems I would with other equipment,” Mr Bullows said.
