There are two reasons to celebrate this season. The Hippodrome’s 99th anniversary is in March, and April marks our second year since opening the doors on the cinema’s remarkable restoration. Since spring 2009 we have welcomed an impressive forty thousand audience members to this very special venue, and clearly the word is out there… the Hippodrome is the place to see great films in friendly and attractive surroundings.

And talking of the word being out there, you might have noticed some of the world’s media picking up the story of Scotland’s first festival of silent film, in Scotland’s first cinema. The Hippodrome Festival of Silent Cinema (18 – 20 March 2011) was launched in February to much excitement, and you can find a summary of the programme on pages 14 - 18. The entire Hippodrome team is looking forward to this long weekend of events, workshops, rare and classic films… all with a touch of red carpet glamour.

Not forgetting our regular programme, this season is also packed with family films for the holidays (including 'Rio' on the day it opens across the UK) and lots of Academy Award nominees – in fact we have either already screened or programmed ahead all the titles in 13 of the major categories, together with our picks of the best nominations in a further nine categories. Why go anywhere else to catch a movie?

As ever the highlights are plentiful but I’ll draw your notice here to some of the smaller films that deserve more attention than their producers’ modest advertising budgets will allow. ‘The Insatiable Moon’ is a magical indie delight that really is a heart-warmer (despite some uncouth language). The many fans of the actor Pete Postlethwaite, who died in January this year, can see him in his final film: the winning comedy ‘Killing Bono’; and ‘Oranges and Sunshine’ directed by Jim Loach (son of Ken!) with its emotionally devastating exposé of a monstrous injustice must be seen, not least for the powerhouse central performance of Emily Watson.

The script for ‘Oranges and Sunshine’ is by Scottish playwright and screenwriter Rona Munro (who also wrote Ken Loach’s ‘Ladybird Ladybird’). In fact quite a number of Scottish talent is at work in this season: Kevin Macdonald (the director of ‘The Eagle’), Peter Mullan (director of ‘NEDS’), James MacAvoy (voice work in ‘Gnomeo and Juliet’) and Paul Laverty (the screenwriter and regular Loach collaborator on ‘Route Irish’). Even closer to home, and back by popular demand, we are glad to bring you a weekend screening of ‘The Coal Road: The Journey of Coal in Bo’ness’, for anyone who didn’t manage to get tickets for our sold out showing in January.

We have two further documentaries in this season: ‘A Small Act’ (pg 12) and ‘Wasteland’ (pg 10) – the latter nominated for the Best Documentary Feature Oscar, and both united by a theme of the latent power in all of us to bring about transformative, meaningful change in our own lives and the lives of others.

Regular readers of the Hippodrome programme will know that I am a great admirer of the work of cinematographer Roger Deakins. You can see his stunning camerawork in ‘True Grit’ and also the Saturday morning family showing of ‘The Secret Garden’. At the time of writing he has racked up his ninth Academy Award nomination and if he doesn’t walk home with the statuette this time there ain’t no justice.

On a final note, wee ones can bring their big folk to our Saturday morning screening of ‘The Gruffalo’ on Saturday 2nd April. The Hippodrome is delighted that this screening will be part of the exciting range of initiatives associated with a new exhibition of contemporary children’s illustration: ‘The Illustrators’, curated by best-selling children’s author Julia Donaldson and produced by the Park Gallery, Falkirk Council and Artlink Central (exhibition runs 12th March to 2nd May, Park Gallery, Callendar House, Callendar Park, admission free).

Blue Valentine A heart-breaking but beautiful film taking the audience back-and-forth between the downward spiral of a relationship and the heady romance where it all began. The clever use of different film gauges and video formats reinforces the thematic shifts around memory, temporality and claustrophobia but the film belongs to the raw, heartfelt performances of the two leads. For many, Ryan Gosling as the weary Peter Pan wannabe gives the performance of the year and his absence from the Academy Awards shortlist was a shameful oversight.

Get Low Part folk-tale, part local legend this engaging film sees grumpy old recluse Felix (Duvall) taking his neighbours by surprise when he decides to head in to town to arrange his own funeral. Everyone will be there… even Felix, who is very clear that the event should take place before he has passed away because the party will be his chance to set some old records straight. A delightful film with a hilarious comic turn from Bill Murray as the opportunistic, lugubrious undertaker with an eager eye for a financial opportunity.

Black Swan With over 70 award nominations under its belt ‘Black Swan’s portrayal of a gifted ballet dancer driven to breaking point has been taking film audiences the world over by storm. Natalie Portman stars as Nina – a repressed perfectionist who unearths her dark side to fully realise her lead performance in Swan Lake, embodying both the Swan Queen and her dark alter ego, the Black Swan. The result is an effective combination of creepy thriller and life-versus-art drama studded with excellent performances from the three female stars.

Morning Glory A lively comedy from the director of ‘Notting Hill’ and writer of ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ about an aspiring TV producer who is charged with reviving the fortunes of a failing morning show programme (a fictional ‘Daybreak’) by hiring Harrison Ford’s grouchy and arrogant journalist. The drama of saving the show from plummeting ratings plus romantic interest in the form of evening news producer Adam is enjoyable, but the back-stage histrionics and fabulous scenes between the duelling co-presenters – Ford and Diane Keaton – are an absolute joy.

We follow young John McGill – bright, studious and a lone ray of hope in a family overshadowed by a delinquent brother and a good-for-nothing father prone to violent, drunken outbursts. With his promise and ambition shattered by prejudice and snobbery, John finds a new direction with the territorial gangs patrolling his local housing estates. Newcomer Conor McCarron is electrifying as the boy/man teetering on the threshold that would see him transcending his dysfunctional background.

Jeff Bridges takes on the role of the hard-drinking, cantankerous, trigger-happy slob, and makes it his own. Tough, one-eyed U.S. Marshal ‘Rooster’ is hired by a stubborn 14 year old girl to track down the hired-hand that killed her father. A true western, with stand-out cinematography from the Coens’ long-time collaborator: Roger Deakins. Stylish, funny and surprisingly touching.

Paul Two British comic-book geeks embark on a road trip pilgrimage to the Alien visitation hot-spots of America’s UFO heartland where they have a chance encounter with ‘Paul’… a super-cool extra-terrestrial, keen to return home. The beer-swilling, pot-smoking Paul hitches a ride with the good-natured duo and they set off to find the mother-ship, with government agents in hot pursuit. It’s clear the whole cast had a lot of fun with this entertaining movie, packed with chuckles and fond nods to sci-fi genre conventions.

Hopkins is perfect as the curmudgeonly, ironical wit who has seen it all yet perseveres in the good fight with pained stoicism. No Strings Attached Given this film’s premise of: “can two friends sustain a commitment-free sexual relationship?”, and their subsequent around-the-clock, emotion-free, no-questions-asked mutual gratification, ‘No Strings Attached’ is a surprisingly sweet rom-com. Ashton Kutcher is Adam – goofy, endearing and dangerously prone to being romantic, whilst Portman (‘Black Swan’ pg 5) demonstrates her skill as a comedic actress, giving a deft performance that humorously charts her character’s gradual shift from independence to intimacy. Look out too for a deliciously hammy turn from Kevin Kline as Adam’s self-infatuated father.

Route Irish Ken Loach and regular screenwriter Paul Laverty turn their attention to the human cost of commercialisation in the war in Iraq in this gripping story of Fergus, an ex-soldier’s quest to uncover the circumstances of his best friend’s death whilst working for a private security firm in Baghdad. Suspicious of the official explanations, Fergus begins his own investigations with the help of his friend’s widow. At once an intricately plotted thriller and a dark depiction of the effects of war, this is one of Loach’s most accessible films to date.

How I Ended This Summer (cert tbc)

On an Arctic island two men operate a run-down weather station. One is taciturn veteran Gulybin and the other is lackadaisical Danilov, on a temporary posting. Gulybin tolerates the younger man, but the tentative balance is unhinged when Danilov’s data readings prove wildly inaccurate and he neglects to pass on vital news from the mainland. Rich in resonance this is a nail-biting tale of physical and mental endurance, with echoes of King Lear in the expressively brutal landscape and the passage through earthly hell to redemption.

Hopkins (who plays Thor’s father Odin) is quoted as describing this film as “a superhero movie with a bit of Shakespeare thrown in” so it is absolutely fitting that Kenneth Branagh directs this epic Marvel Comic tale (replacing the original man on the job – Matthew Vaughn). When Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior, is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment he learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.

Once upon a time Hilde Back, a teacher in Sweden, decided to sponsor the high school education of a boy from a poor village in Kenya. That boy was Chris, who ended up at Harvard and now works as a human rights lawyer with the UN. His sister achieved similar distinctions and together they set up a charity under Hilde’s name to finance the education of more children like themselves. After years of searching, Chris finally traced his benefactor and what ensues is a wonderful documentary of individuals transformed by the smallest of acts and the very best of human nature.

Box Office and Booking Information

The Hippodrome Box Office is open Saturdays 10:15am - 2:30pm, and also opens 45 minutes before, and closes 15 minutes after the start of each screening.

There is usually no need to book, but tickets can be booked in advance during the open hours OR from the Steeple Box Office (Tel: 01324 506850), Monday to Saturday, 9:30am - 4:45pm. Telephone bookings are subject to a 50p booking fee. Reserved tickets must be paid for within 3 days, or no later than 30 minutes prior to the screening. Tickets will be released for re-sale otherwise

Refunds

Tickets will not be exchanged or money refunded after purchase except in the event of cancellation of screening/activity by Falkirk Council.

Refreshments

The Hippodrome Café and Licensed Bar opens 45 minutes before each screening and closes at the start of the screening. Popcorn, ice-cream, sweets, tea, coffee and soft drinks are available from the Café. Beer, wine, and spirits are available from the Licensed Bar. Please note: Children and young people are not permitted to approach the bar. No person under the age of 18 years is permitted to purchase alcohol. Proof of age may be requested. Only food and drink purchased on the premises may be consumed.

By Car: Bo’ness lies on the south bank of the Firth of Forth. Travelling from the west, exit the M9 at J5 onto the A905 then take the A904 into Bo’ness. From the east, exit at J3 onto the A803 then take the A904 into Bo’ness.

By Bus: There are bus services to Bo’ness from Edinburgh, Linlithgow, Bathgate, Falkirk, Stirling, Cumbernauld and Glasgow. The services are operated by First Edinburgh. Call Traveline Scotland on 0871 200 22 33 for bus timetables or visit www.travelinescotland.com
