Typography Words to Know

• Serif• Sans Serif• Font• Font Family• Font Style

SerifSmall, finishing strokes on the arms, stems, and

tails of characters. Serif typefaces are usually used for text in books because the serifs form a link between letters that leads the eye across a

line of type.

Sans SerifA typeface without serifs. For example, Helvetica

or Bauhaus. Sans serif type is more legible in headings than in a long passage of text.

no serifs

Hint: San Serif fonts work great as a building block for your graffiti design.

no serifs

FontOne weight, width, and style of a typeface.

Before scalable type, there was little distinction between the terms font, face, and

family. Font and face still tend to be used interchangeably, although the term face is

usually more correct.

Font familyAlso known as family. The collection of faces that were designed together and intended to

be used together. For example, the Garamond font family consists of roman and

italic styles, as well as regular, semi-bold, and bold weights. Each of the style and weight combinations is called a face.

Font styleOne of the variations in appearance, such as

italic and bold, that make up the faces in a font family.
