Leviticus 16

5 He shall take from the congregation of the sons of Israel two

male goats for a sin offering and one ram for a burnt offering.

7 He shall take the two goats and present them before

the LORD at the doorway of the tent of meeting. 8 Aaron shall

cast lots for the two goats, one lot for the LORD and the other

lot for the scapegoat. 9 Then Aaron shall offer the goat on

which the lot for the LORD fell, and make it a sin offering.

10 But the goat on which the lot for the scapegoat fell shall be

presented alive before the LORD, to make atonement upon it,

to send it into the wilderness as the scapegoat.

The 2 Goats

Leviticus

15 “Then he shall slaughter the goat of the

sin offering which is for the people, and

bring its blood inside the veil and do with its

blood as he did with the blood of the bull,

and sprinkle it on the mercy seat and in

front of the mercy seat.” (Lev 16:15)

Leviticus

21 Then Aaron shall lay both of his hands on the

head of the live goat, and confess over it all the

iniquities of the sons of Israel and all their

transgressions in regard to all their sins; and he

shall lay them on the head of the goat and

send it away into the wilderness by the hand of a

man who stands in readiness. 22 The goat shall

bear on itself all their iniquities to a solitary land;

and he shall release the goat in the wilderness.”

Leviticus

11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood,

and I have given it to you on the altar to

make atonement for your souls; for it is the

Jesus as our atonement for sins

God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement,

through the shedding of his blood--to be received

by faith..” (Rom 3:25)

1My little children, I am writing these things to you

so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we

have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ

the righteous; 2and He Himself is the propitiation

for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for

those of the whole world. .” (1 John 2:1-2)

What we learn in Leviticus…

Jesus is the atonement of sins for those who

receive Him in faith.

We are cleansed by His blood so we can worship

Him in holiness.

25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, 26 so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless. Title: Census of chaps. 1, 26; Hebrew word, “in the desert”

Author: Moses

Date : 1450-1410 BC (last 38 years)

Theme and Message

• Relates to the journey of Israel from Mount Sinai to the plains of Moab on the boarder of Canaan.

• It tells about the complaints and murmurings of Israel and God’s judgment.

• God’s faithfulness in spite of Israel’s unbelief.

Page 35: History of israel part 3 PRRM Bible Study Group

32 These are the numbered men of the sons of Israel by their fathers’ households; the total of the numbered men of the camps by their armies, 603,550. (Num 2:32)

Census as they leave Mt. Sinai

Page 36: History of israel part 3 PRRM Bible Study Group

Numbers

• Ancient Hebrew title “in the wilderness”

• A year had passed after they left Egypt

• Numbering of the people as they prepare for journey

• God gave them duties and responsibilities

• God’s led them as they moved from Sinai

17 Whenever the cloud was lifted from over the tent,

afterward the sons of Israel would then set out; and in the place where the cloud settled down, there the sons of Israel

would camp.(Num 9:17)

Page 37: History of israel part 3 PRRM Bible Study Group

Aaron’s Benediction(Chapter 6)

22 Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 23 “Speak to Aaron and to his sons, saying, ‘Thus you shall bless the sons of Israel. You shall say to them:

24 The LORD bless you, and keep you;25 The LORD make His face shine on you,

And be gracious to you;26 The LORD lift up His countenance on

you, and give you peace.’

Page 38: History of israel part 3 PRRM Bible Study Group

Passover Celebrated(Chapter 9:4-5)

4 So Moses told the sons of Israel to observe the Passover. 5 They observed the Passover in the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month, at twilight, in the wilderness of Sinai; according to all that the LORD had commanded Moses, so the sons of Israel did.

Page 39: History of israel part 3 PRRM Bible Study Group

The tribes set out from Sinai(Chapter 10:11-12)

11 Now in the second year, in the second month, on the twentieth of the month, the cloud was lifted from over the tabernacle of the testimony; 12 and the sons of Israel set out on their journeys from the wilderness of Sinai. Then the cloud settled down in the wilderness of Paran.

Page 40: History of israel part 3 PRRM Bible Study Group

Israelites grumble and complain

• Chap 11 – people complain of “manna”; God provides quail; “judgment”

• Chap 12 – Aaron and Miriam complain against Moses; God upholds His servant;

“…He is faithful in all My household. With Him I speak mouth to mouth”

Lessons:1. When we journey with God, trust that he provides. Don’t

complain. Instead, pray, rejoice and give thanks

2. When you do the work of God and people come against you, God is your refuge and your defender.

Page 41: History of israel part 3 PRRM Bible Study Group

Page 43: History of israel part 3 PRRM Bible Study Group
Page 44: History of israel part 3 PRRM Bible Study Group

10 Spies’ report 27 Thus they told him, and said, “We went in to the land where you sent us; and it certainly does flow with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. 28 Nevertheless, the people who live in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large; and moreover, we saw thedescendants of Anakthere.”

30 Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, “We should by all means go up and take possession of it, for we will surely overcome it.”

Caleb’s report

Page 45: History of israel part 3 PRRM Bible Study Group

10 Spies’ rebel…

14 2…“Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! Or would that we had died in this wilderness! 3 Why is the LORD bringing us into this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will become plunder; would it not be better for us to return to Egypt?” 4 So they said to one another, “Let us appoint a leader and return to Egypt.”

7“The land which we passed … is an exceedingly good land. 8 If the LORD is pleased with us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us—a land which flows ... 9 Only do not rebel against the LORD; and do not fear the people of the land, for they will be our prey. Their protection has been removed from them, and the LORD is with us; do not fear them.”

Joshua & Caleb tore…

Page 46: History of israel part 3 PRRM Bible Study Group

God’s answer…

11 The LORD said to Moses, “How long will this people spurn Me? And how long will they not believe in Me, despite all the signs which I have performed in their midst? 12 I will smite them with pestilence and dispossess them…

17 But now, I pray, let the power of the Lord be great, just as You have declared, 18 ‘The LORD is slow to anger and abundant in loving kindness, forgiving iniquity and transgression…

Moses pleads…

19 Pardon, I pray, the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of Your lovingkindness, just as You also have forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.”

20 So the LORD said, “I have pardoned them according to your word;

Page 47: History of israel part 3 PRRM Bible Study Group

What we learn…

• Joshua and Caleb believed and saw the promise

• Joshua and Caleb believed the Promise-Giver Himself

How intimate was Moses’ relationship with God? What about us?

Page 48: History of israel part 3 PRRM Bible Study Group

God’s anger and judgment

28 Say to them, ‘As I live,’ says the LORD, ‘just as you have spoken in My hearing, so I will surely do to you; 29 your corpses will fall in this wilderness, even all your numbered men, according to your complete number from twenty years old and upward, who have grumbled against Me.30 Surely you shall not come into the land in which I swore to settle you, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.

Prophesy about Israel

4 27 The LORD will scatter you among the peoples, and you will be left few in number among the nations where the LORD drives you. 28 There you will serve gods, the work of man’s hands, wood and stone, which neither see nor hear nor eat nor smell. 29 But from there you will seek the LORD your God, and you will find Him if you search for Him with all your heart and all your soul.

But He is faithful…30 When you are in distress and all these things have come upon you, in the latter days you will return to the LORD your God and listen to His voice. 31 For the LORD your God is a compassionate God; He will not fail you nor destroy you nor forget the covenant with your fathers which He swore to them.

Page 61: History of israel part 3 PRRM Bible Study Group

Awesome, covenant-keeping God (Deu 4:32-40)

• God, Creator

• God spoke in the fire to His people

• God redeeming His people

• He is God and there is no other…

• God chose them on account of their fathers…

39 Know therefore today, and take it to your heart, that the LORD, He is God in heaven above and on the earth below; there is no other. 40 So you shall keep His statutes and His commandments which I am giving you today, that it may go well with you and with your children after you, and that you may live long on the land which the LORD your God is giving you for all time.”

Implications of the SHEMA

“Our” God – the God of Israel

One God – no other god

Love as the only acceptable response

All your heart – the core of your life

With all of your soul – the mind, consciousness

With all your strength – the body, energy and capabilities

SHEMA in the New Testament4 “Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD is one! 5 You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. (Deu 6:4)

36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And He said to him, “‘YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD

YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.’38 This is the great and foremost commandment. 39 The second is like it, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE

YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.’ 40 On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.” (Mat 22:36-40)

Mark 12:30-31; Luke 10:27

Moses teaches primacy of Scriptures18 “You shall therefore impress these words of mine on your heart and on your soul; and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontals on your forehead.

19 You shall teach them to your sons, talking of them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road and when you lie down and when you rise up.

20 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates,

21 so that your days and the days of your sons may be multiplied on the land which the LORD swore to your fathers to give them, as long as the heavens remain above the earth. (Deu 11:18-21)

Moses tells of a Great Prophet…

18 I will raise up a prophet from among theircountrymen like you, and I will put My words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. 19 It shall come about that whoever will not listen to My words which he shall speak in My name, I Myself will require it of him. (Deu 18:18-19)

Page 68: History of israel part 3 PRRM Bible Study Group

Moses would not enter the promised land…

3 “Why, now, have you brought us up from Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?”

5 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Pass before the people and take with you some of the elders of Israel; and take in your hand your staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. 6 Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.” (Exo 17:1-7)

8 “Take the rod; and you and your brother Aaron assemble the congregation and speak to the rock before their eyes, that it may yield its water.

10 …And he said to them, “Listen now, you rebels; shall we bring forth water for you out of this rock?” 11 Then Moses lifted up his hand and struck the rock twice with his rod; and water came forth abundantly… 12 But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you have not believed Me, to treat Me as holy in the sight of the sons of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.” (Num 20:8-12)

Page 69: History of israel part 3 PRRM Bible Study Group

Moses pleads to see the land…

23 “I also pleaded with the LORD at that time, saying, 24 ‘O Lord GOD, You have begun to show Your servant Your greatness and Your strong hand; for what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do such works and mighty acts as Yours? 25 Let me, I pray, cross over and see the fair land that is beyond the Jordan, that good hill country and Lebanon.’

26 But the LORD was angry with me on your account, and would not listen to me; and the LORD said to me, ‘Enough! Speak to Me no more of this matter.

Deut 3:23-26

Death of Moses (Chap 34)

1 Now Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah… And the LORD showed him all the land, Gilead as far as Dan,2 and all Naphtali and the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, and all the land of Judah as far as the western sea, 3 and the Negev and the plain in the valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees, as far as Zoar.

4 Then the LORD said to him, “This is the land which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying, ‘I will give it to your descendants’; I have let you see it with your eyes, but you shall not go over there.”
