History of our

School & HousesDINNINGTON HIGH SCHOOL

Achieving Excellence

1963….Dinnington High School is born

Three schools merged into one: the two moderns for boys and girls had merged in 1957

The secondary age part of the DinningtonChelmsford Technical College

To encourage the amalgamation of three schools

into one the motto ‘One and All’ was introduced

Achieving Excellence

The school badge…1963

The first school badge was in black and white

It was drawn by Miss Edgar who by 1963 was the bursar for the new school having been the school clerk.

This picture is from Mrs Morton, our Vice Chair of Governors who was one of the first pupils in 1963.

Where did the symbols on the badge

come from?

It seems that the new school wanted to make links to the history of Dinnington and its surrounding area.

So it linked to four landed families:

Athorpe, Hatfield, Osborne & Segrave

Achieving Excellence

Athorpe: gave us the falcon

Athorpe: owners of Dinnington Hall in the late 1600s to 1700s

Now that same hall is a care home on Falcon Way

Where does the Falcon come from?

Segrave: gave us the rampant lion

Segrave: after the de Segrave family who owned much of the local area in the 16th century prior to the Athorpes.

Originally from Leicestershire, a younger brother of the Segrave family: Nicholas had land and a manor in Dinnington

Their family coat of arms was a rampant lion, originally with a crown

Achieving Excellence

Hatfield or Hatfeild – is it a rose?

Hatfield family: land-owners in Laughton-en-le-Morthen in the 17th century.

Originally spelt Hatfeild as you can see on the Hatfeild Arms sign

Where is the white rose? It turns out it should be a cinquefoil – a five petalled flower we now call a potentilla

Osborne: gave us the heraldic tiger

Osborne: Osborne: the family name of the Duke of Leeds who had property in Kiveton Park

So where is the tiger?

An heraldic tiger – has no stripes but has a black ruff and a fancy tail

The colours?

Soon after the black and white version the colours appeared. These colours were not linked to the original families but are believed to be the sporting colours chosen to link to house competitions:

Yellow: Athorpe

Red: Segrave

Green: Hatfield

Blue: Osborne

Name changes & status changes

1974, Dinnington became part of Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council

Renamed: Dinnington Comprehensive School

1993: designated a Technology College

2005: added the science and engineering specialisms

February 2015: became an academy as part of the LEAP Multi-Academy Trust, and returned to the name Dinnington High School

The Houses: came and went

Originally the school years we now call Year 7 to 11 were divided into four houses: Athorpe, Hatfield, Osborne and Segrave. Each had a house base.

The sixth form stood separately and was neither a house on its own or part of the houses from Y7-11.

In 1996, approximately, the house system was phased out.

Achieving Excellence

The Houses returned in 2011

In 2011, the House system returned with the introduction of Vertical Tutor Groups: Y7-11.

This time, three Houses covered the years 7-11.

The sixth form was its own house Athorpe – although the sixth form base is NOT in Athorpe building – that is science rooms.

In 2017, the three houses are being retained but now as Y11 go into Y12 they will retain their original house.

Athorpe lives on as the name of a building.

How many badges?

So after the original black and white badge, others have appeared

2017 onwards

In Spring 2017, controversy surround the badge but after much discussion with students and families, DHS kept its school badge – the link to our history

Now we ask Y6s what house their family members were in

And like every other modern company and organisation – we have used modern graphics to update the look of the badge and to do a bit of historic correction.

Achieving Excellence

The Hatfield flower has

returned to the original

Hatfield cinquefoil

The Osborne tiger has

lots its stripes and

gained its ruff, but also

has changed its

position similar to the

rugby club version

The Athorpe Falcon has

become a bit more

upright like the original

proud falcon on the

family crest

Our new motto

Our new motto links to the Multi-Academy Trust we became part of when we became an Academy

Achieving Excellence is a promise we aim to live into every day for every student.

Every student, whatever their starting points and talents, will be supported to be the best they can be…to achieve their personal excellence

One and all might not be the words on our motto but embedded in our new motto is the commitment that it is for every student
