Have your cakeWhile traditional multi-tiereddesigns are still popular, there is acontingent of brides and groomsmoving toward smaller creations.

Jill Shumka, owner and bakerat the Uncommon Cake inVancouver, says many of herclients are choosing cakes thatlook homemade and rustic.

“Tomake it look homemade is anart in itself,” she says with a laugh, and explains that to go along withamore rustic look, ingredientsare more organic and incorporatewild or fresh flowers.

In keeping with that trend,“naked” cakes are also popular

right now, she notes. A nakedcake is an un-iced cake withvisible layers of cake and filling.“It just looks muchmore kind ofhomemade,” says Shumka.

There are also more requestsfor vegan and gluten-free cakestheses days, Shumka says.

Not many couples are includingtraditional figurines on top ofthe cake, she notes. Kathrin Best, marketing manager at ThomasHaas in North Vancouver, agrees. She says couples tend to add

fresh flowers, ribbon decorationsor monograms instead.

One of the popular trendsof late has been a fake cake, which features a real layer onthe bottom for the couple tocut. The rest of the cake is notedible. This type of cake ismeant as a showpiece so thecouple can get the traditionalphoto of themselves cutting it,but pieces of the same flavourare already prepared in the backfor all the guests and can bequickly and easily served. Thisapproach also makes it easier toprovide gluten-free options tosome guests rather than a wholegluten-free cake.

Edible wedding favours andother desserts are also still

popular, with macaron, truffles, chocolates andcupcakes still at thetop of the list.

Finding the perfect cake may not be at thetop of a couple’s to-do list, but it can be thesweetest part of planning for a wedding.

&eat it, toonotes that macaron towers are avery popular item for weddingsthis year.

Flavour is also an important factorwith the days of stale fruit cakeslong gone. Traditional flavours, such as vanilla with raspberrybutter cream, chocolate, andchocolate caramel are popular, along with passion fruit, variations of chocolate andpumpkin spice cake.

In NewWest, Sheila Comer ofPink Ribbon Bakery says redvelvet is still the most popularflavour.

Heading into spring andsummer, fresh berries, lemonand more fruit-focused cakes arepopular along with florals such aslavendar and Earl Grey tea.

Colour trends2014 brought in the rein of the pastels, wood grains andrustic tones with dustings of lavender hues. The ethereal trend definitelywon’t disappear this year. Instead, we will see it complimented with accents of bolder shadesfor a pop of fun. Pantone has released its spring 2015 colour report with the theme ‘En PleinAir,’ meaning ‘in the open air,’ shades that take their cue from nature.

WHITEIT’SA

That said, many brides aresaying “I do” to non-traditionalwedding dresses for theirnuptials and even optingfor colour. Here, we pickout some of our favouritealternatives.

ShortieA great way to showoff those pins yourhusband-to-be lovesso much! Don’t beafraid to choose a

short dress foryour walk downthe aisle. Welove the laser cutdetailing on thisone from ASOS.

RelaxedeleganceWe love the idea of a morerelaxed take on the weddingensemble by combining anelegant skirt with a sweater à laOlivia Palermo.

Even if you’re hoping for a magical, winter, wonderlandwedding, it’s fair to say that few couples wish for a white outon their big day.

And, depending on the bridal party, what happens in Vancouver canalso stay in Vancouver — so long as partiers restrict their social mediapostings to selfies. So while a party buses, male strippers and Jell-Oshots might be a popular choice, the follow are five (mostly) photo-friendly alternatives.

SpaDayIrene Lee, founder of Pure Nail Bar, says during wedding season eachof her numerous locations across the city typically sees two to threebridal parties a day, a time when brides, bridesmaids and the peoplewho love them flock to the salon for a little pampering before the bigday. Lee allows groups of between six and 20 take over the salon formanicures, pedicures, gel nails and foot massages. (purenailbar.com)

There are many spas across the city that can accommodate bridalparties: check out Juillet Spa and Wedding (juilletsparesort.ca), Spaat the Wedgewood Hotel (wedgewoodhotel.com), Absolute Spa atFairmont Hotel Vancouver, and Red Cedar at Four Seasons Vancouver(fourseasons.com/Vancouver).

PoleDance StagettesTantra Fitness founder Tammy Morris, an exotic dancer for more than10 years, has choreographed pole and lap dance routines ideal forthe blushing bride and her BFFs. For the more modest, Tantra cancustomize the party to suit bridal parties more into fitness than sexyfun (tantrafitness.com).

Drawn toMenArt PartyAs the Real Housewives ofVancouver discovered, there canbe something quite liberatingin sipping Champagne, eatingstrawberries and drawing anincredibly handsome manwearing nothing but a tubesock — even if no one in thebridal party has ever previouslypicked up a charcoal pencil.(Drawntomen.com)

HighTeaThere’s nothing quite like unfolding a pristine white linen napkin beforesipping piping hot tea from a delicately painted, fine china cup toelevate an afternoon. And while those tiny cucumber sandwiches are stilla staple onmost high teamenus, today’s version is just as likely to alsooffer everything from Champagne and caviar to lobster.

An added bonus is the mother-of-the-bride and mother-in-law to bewill likely feel more comfortable holding a cup of Earl Grey than astainless-steel pole.

In Vancouver, high tea is served at several locations includingthe Fairmont Hotel Vancouver (fairmont.com/hotel-vancouver),Wedgewood Hotel (wedgewoodhotel.com) and for a more casualexperience, Truffles Café at VanDusen Botanical Garden [email protected].

Butlers in theBuffHandsome, and cheeky, partybutlers will mix cocktails, wearingnothing but an apron and asmile, and ensure no one inthe bridal party lifts a fingerduring these bare buns-themedbachelorette bashes. Butlers inthe Buff takes care of the bride’severy need in private homes, hotel suites, pool side or even onthe beach (butlersinthebuff.ca).

There’s no need to head to Vegas for abachelorette party when the action inVancouver can be just as wild, or not, depending on the bride’s wishes, of course.

Flowers are one ofthe most importantparts of your weddingdécor.

Flowers add colour and eleganceto your decor and help bringyour theme to life. Most eventcoordinators will know all thetricks of the trade when it comesto choosing flowers for differentoccasions. Colour schemes, budgets, rustic vs. modern, all of these details affectwhich floral arrangementsare right for you.

It’s important to rememberto go with your own style.Couples should not feelpressured to decide on a moretraditional style if that’s notsomething that suits them.Instead, choose a style that mostappeals to you, be it neutral orbold colours, formal or casual.Your style might also reveal a

preference for something other than roses, which is perfectly alright. It’s your wedding.

If budget is your main concern, and it is in most cases, stay in-season when possible. When choosing a floral arrangement, it’simportant to consider when you’ll be getting married and whichflowers will be in-season. It’s possible to find most floral varieties allyear, but if you choose seasonal flowers, you’ll likely pay less andthose flowers will be morereadily available and durable.

While some details aremanageable wedding doit yourself projects, flowerarrangements tend not to beon that list unless you have hadprior experience. The weddingday is going to be busy enoughwithout brides and groomshaving to worry about arrangingthe bouquets. A professionalflorist, ideally one who has come

In lieu of flowers, considercandles to save money. Manycouples hope for a floralcenterpiece at each table, butthat can prove costly. If thefloral budget is somewhat

limited, supplement thecenterpieces with candles tosave money. The centerpieceslikely won’t be as grandiose, but smaller floral arrangementscoupled with candles can createa romantic feel.

Lastly, stick to your budget!Couples will find it’s very easyto go over budget quickly inregard to floral arrangements,

Rain showers on a weddingday may bring good luck, but they are seldom coveted. However, a different type ofshower altogether is often highlyanticipated and can help couplesfeel like they’re one in a million.

Wedding showers are gift givingparties held for couples about toget married. The custom beganin the nineteenth century andcontinues to present day, primarilyin North America and Australia.Guests traditionally “shower” thebride to be with all the necessities(and some fun extras) that shewill need after she ties the knot. These gifts will help the soon tobemarried couple establish ahome together.

Bridal showers are steeped intradition, but today’s version

continues to veer off the beatenpath. Nowadays, bridal showersfeature fun and games muchlike a party.

TheKnot.com, a website thataims to help couples plan theirweddings and all the eventsleading up to the big day, identifies these key trends inmodern bridal showers.

Couples’ showersModern couples who liketo be all-inclusive are nowplanning bridal showersthat cater to mixed guests.Dubbed a “couple shower,”these parties include femaleand male friends and relatives.Gifts are still the main focus ofthe event, but they’re variedand include guy-friendly items

within the mix of householdgoods.

Power showersMany are familiar with the terms“man cave” and “bromance,”but few may know there are nowwedding showers geared entirelyaround the groom. Known as“power showers,” these eventsfocus on the groom to be, whois showered with a bevy ofgadgets and power tools thatare certain to stock his futuregarage. The parties are decidedlymore testosterone friendly andcan include golf outings, pokernights or action movie flicks aspossible themes.

Destination&activity showersRather than having guests hangaround a restaurant watchinggift after gift get unwrapped,

Wedding showers that breakfrom tradition.

some bridal parties opt tothrow an activity shower. Theseshowers are focused around aparticular activity. For example, ladies may be treated to a dayat the spa. Other ideas includehorseback riding at a stable ora day at the ballpark. Becausehosting an activity showerfor dozens of people can getexpensive, these types ofshowers may be reserved foronly your closest friends andfamily members.

Bride involvedshowersThe idea of walking into aroom and being surprised byfriends and family members isappealing to some brides to be,but not everyone. Some bridesprefer not to be surprised by ashower and actually would liketo have a role in the planningof the party.

FAVOURof theMONTHGifts for guestsnot alwayson the plateIf you’ve been to a wedding, you’ve likely carted homethe “thanks for coming and

celebrating our special day”gift. You know it’s usually the candiedalmonds or petrified slice of fruitcake that remains tucked away, uneaten, in the recess of yourpantry. Well, that’s changing.Today’s bride and groom areserving up gifts more likely to beeaten or remind guests not onlyof the big day when two peopletied the knot, but the characterof the new husband and wife.

That’s what wedding plannersincluding Laura Takasaki areseeing these days. While ediblesare still favourites on the list, more personalized items are thetrend.

“We’ve had gifts be bottles ofhot sauce because the groomwas the one who loved hot sauceon pretty much everything heate,” said Takasaki, who for thepast 12 years has run Richmond-based Imagine That Events with

business partner Sharon Lieu.“Others we’ve had gave awaycandy bars that were wrapped inthe same colours as the weddingparty — something that wouldremind their guests of them.”

Wedding guest trinkets havetheir place in history. In the 16thcentury, wedding favours were asign of extravagance and showedoff the family’s wealth to theguests. Only rich and prominentpeople during those times couldafford and provide sophisticatedgifts to their guests. Some favourssymbolized luck and sharingthem with guests ensured goodfortune to all.

Bonbonnieres were oncea popular wedding favor.A bonbonniere is a small, decorative box made ofporcelain, crystal or gold. Insidethe box houses a sweet delicacy, often called a bonbon.

Almonds becamecommon favoursbecause they symbolized fertility, health, happiness, wealth andlongevity.

While almonds may have goneout of style, so too has theinsistence that all weddingguest gifts be edible.

“We’re gettingmore andmoreclients who instead of giving awaysomething will make a donationto a charity of their choice,”Takasaki said. “We’ve also hada bride and groomwho gave acheese plate made of slate anda cheese knife. Now, slate isn’tinexpensive, so that was probablythemost elaborate we’ve had.”

While that likely exceeded the$2 to $5 per person gift cost, which is today’s rule of thumb, itcarried with it a special meaning,Takasaki said.

The ProfessionalThe topic seems simple enough. Hire aphotographer and relish in the memoriesforever. But there are important thingsto consider when choosing yourphotographer and prepping for yoursessions. Here’s what Jun had to say.

Have the photographer attend therehearsal. It is important for themto be in the space and learn howthe light behaves. This is also agreat opportunity for familymembers to get to know thephotographer so they feelcomfortable around him or her.

Send yourweddingday scheduletwo weeksprior to yourbig day. Yourphotographerwill need tolook at youritinerary andgive somepointers on whatis or is not realistic. For example, photo session time, gettingready, commuting, position ofthe sun and locations.

An engagement pictureis about more than just aromantic photo shoot. It acts asa practice round between youand your photographer. You getto know one another and learnthe styles you like and don’t. Becareful not to be too demandingin your art direction. Rememberyou are hiring them for their styleand creative license they bring tothe table.

Choose a photographerthat “shoots for the album.”Photography is about telling astory which should be told inmultiple images as if it’s a movie.A wedding album is composedof all your family and friends, the small details you painedover, the little sharedmoments and all the candidoccasions throughout the

day. Ask to see examples of howthey’ve capture a whole wedding.Theymay have great individualshots on their website, but it’s thestory telling you want to judgethem on.

Provide the photographers withmeals and a proper table. “Don’tforget about us, we get hungrytoo. Refuel them so they cancontinue capturing your weddingwith great energy.”

A real wife’s (fairy)tale

Megan first set eyes on herhusband to be at her Grade 12,high school dance, whichMikeattended as his cousin’s “plusone.” He wrote his number on theback of his dance ticket and a fewweeks later Megan called him andthey went on their first date. Therest, as they say is history...

Mike proposed as the sun wentdown on their 11th anniversarytrip to the Grand Canyon. Theytied the knot exactly one yearlater on their 12th anniversary.

While they decided not to go fora particular theme, the wordsnatural, earthy and vintage evokethe type of atmosphere theycreated. It was also important theday was unique to them so theyenlisted the help of friends andfamily to craft personal touchessuch as handmade weddinginvitations and candle holders. The bride’s sister created flowerballs to decorate the room andthey avoided using expensivecentre pieces by placing aframed picture of themselveson every table.

Megan had originally bought adress on sale which she sold aftershe found “the one” a few weekslater. She knew early on whichshape and style she was lookingfor, but tried on everythingjust to be sure and admits she

liked some dresses she hadn’texpected to. Her friends maderating cards ranging from“Meganalicious” to “LOL”(Lowest of Lows), to aid in thehard task of dress selection!

She feels their best investment ofthe day was the wonderful teamof four photographers at KuniooPhoto + Cinema, who not onlyprovided themwith 800 beautifulshots of their day, but alsocaptured the whole event on film.

Megan strongly recommendsfuture couples invest in weddingcoordinators for the day so thatthey can arrange the logisticsand make sure everyone is paid, while you and your weddingparty enjoy yourselves.

Themost special part of theday for her was exchangingvows, which they had bothwritten themselves. At therecommendation of the celebrant, they also incorporated a winebox which contained a letter toone another, written on the nightbefore their wedding, and a bottleof rum, which they are allowedto open if they ever have a fightand need to be reminded of theirvows to one another.

We wish them every happinessin their future together and hopetheir wine box remains closed!

Love shines attheDiamond

Cocktails andcanapés in historicGastown

If she had her way, they wouldhave eloped.

Molly Donnici wanted to avoidthe trappings of a traditionalwedding – mainly because of thesometimes-awkward and lengthyspeeches, along with the publicdisplays of emotion.

But, as a compromise, Mollyand her then-fiancé Paul Donniciopted for a low-key affairwith canapés and cocktails atthe Diamond, a lounge andrestaurant with historic charmoverlooking Maple Tree Squarein the heart of Gastown.

The Donnici’s May 2014wedding was more cocktailparty than conventional nuptials, but still had all the warmth of atraditional wedding.

“We just omitted the things thatweren’t important to us and hadsome really important peoplethat were with us,” Molly says.

Having the wedding at one of thecity’s most stunning and quaintlounges suited the couple’surban vibe while still meetingtheir families’ need for a goodold-fashioned get together. Paul,a barber at Belmont Barbershopon Broadway and Main Streetin Vancouver, comes from abig Italian family, so the idea ofrunning off to get hitched didn’treally sit well with him, Mollysays. In the end, even though thepair weren’t married in a church, his family was pleased with thenuptials.

“I just think they were happy wewere getting married,” laughsMolly, an assistant buyer atLitchfield, a luxury goods storeon Water Street.

It’s hard not to appreciate theDiamond; it’s a space that evokesthe feeling of old New Yorkwith its exposed brick walls andtowering windows.

“The room itself was beautiful,”Molly says. “I didn’t want to haveto decorate. I didn’t want to doanything. We got there, it lookedgorgeous and, literally, at the endof the night we walked away. There was nothing else to do.”

The weathercouldn’t havebeen morecooperative insetting the tonefor the sexylounge wedding, which was heldon a Sundayevening. Therain had trickleddown throughout the day,but cleared by evening, makingfor one of those clean Vancouverspring nights when the air smellsfresh and moist and anythingfeels possible.

While gorgeous outside lightshone in on the candle-lit room,it was Molly’s dress that was theevening’s defining decoration. The curvy stunner, with longgolden hair, wore a fitted whitesequined cocktail numberthat sat just above theknee. The dress, whichshe hunted for afterseeing it on a blog, fit in perfectly withthe glamorous-yet simple vibeof the wedding, which closedthe Diamondat 1 a.m.

The cocktailscontinued flowingat a party held ata wedding guest’s

Gastownoffice. Theexhaustednewlywedsstopped into the afterparty for afew minutesbeforesneakingaway totheir suite at

Vancouver’s charming boutiquehotel the Loden.

In the end, the urban-chicwedding cost the couple just$8,500, which they managed topay for in full, leaving no leftoverdebts to deal with as they startedtheir lives together.

Make it“officiant”While you might have lots youwould like to say, it is worthspeaking to your officiant firstand to make sure personalizedvows are allowed. During civilceremonies it’s often acceptableto customise your vows, howeverthis is not always the case withreligious services. There maybe lines of scripture or certainpassages that need to be readso best to check before youdedicate a lot of time to writing.

Schedule timefor yourwritingYour vows are not somethingyou can scribble down franticallyon the back of the Orderof Ceremony, hours before

reaching the alter! Good vowsrequire time and effort, especiallyif you want to perfect thembefore your big day. Treat yourwriting time like an appointmentby marking it on your calendaror setting reminders – weeks, orbetter, a few months in advance. You can always go back to them.

Start fromthe heartStaring at a blank page canbe daunting so start by jottingdown your feelings. Think aboutwhat marriage and your futurespouse mean to you. Referenceyour personal experiencestogether. What is the mostimportant thing you want topromise your partner? It doesn’thave to be perfect at this stageand, if you’ve taken the advice

The figure eightis believed to representthe symbol for infinity,so with that in mindwe’ve come up with

eight top tipsfor writing

your wedding vows,which will last

from tip two, you’ve still gotplenty of time to make changes.Treat this as your starting point.

Be inspiredIf finding the right words isgiving you writer’s block, whynot try reading the work ofothers? Is there an author or poetwho inspires you? You can evenquote certain writers in yourvows or let the tone of their workshape the words of yours.

Tone it upAnd that’s not a reference toyour pre-wedding fitness regime! It is important to decide on atone which you feel comfortableusing. Don’t be afraid to tap intoyour personality. After all, it’syour day. It might not be yourstyle to spout words of adorationin front of friends and familyand that’s okay! Feel free to use

humour if that’s the way younormally express your affections. That said, a stand-up comedyroutine might be inappropriateso try tying in this tone in withmore traditional passages tocreate a cohesive, yet personal, expression of your feelings.

Make a planWhile you might find it easyto talk about your loved oneand that hilarious “had to bethere moment” for hours, it isimportant to keep everyoneengaged and the ceremonymoving along. Read your notes, pick out the key elements anduse them to create a structurefor what you want to say. Aim tokeep your speech to about oneminute long. This will also meanyou have slightly less to try toremember on the day, which isalways a plus.

Practicemakes perfectAlthough clearly not in frontof your partner! Reading yourvows aloud will give you theopportunity to identify any areasthat make you trip up, and let’sface it, that’s the last thing youwant to be thinking about onyour walk up the aisle! Betterstill, enlist the help of a friendto listen to your vows and givetheir advice onhow they

sound. This will also give you anindication of how you feel sayingthem in front of an audience.

Break a legNot literally! You know whatwe mean. This is a final note ofencouragement to just go forit! Public speaking can be nervewracking, but remember this isabout you and your promisesto the person standing oppositeyou. No one else matters.

Set a budgetAny big project needs a strongfoundation. In wedding planning, that’s your budget. Now thatdoesn’t mean you need majorfunding, you just need to figureout what you’re comfortablespending. Once you have thatnumber, it will help avoid futurearguments and narrow downyour options.

Their duties arecompletely different. Investin the right professionals whowill create a once in a life timeexperience.

Take itone dayat a timeDon’t overwhelmyourself from the start.Wedding planning is a bigjob so take a deep breathand tackle one task at a time.Again, invest in a planner whocan make your journey a loteasier and enjoyable.
