Brief Description About Sardar Patel University
Named after a great son of India, Shree Vallabhbhai Patel, better known as Sardar Patel, the Sardar Patel University was set up in 1955. Sardar Patel University, one of the early residential rural universities of the country, is a marvel of post-independence India, created to serve the country through rural regeneration, at the inspiration of the Iron Man of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and with the initiative and support of the local people. Located in Vallabh Vidyanagar, a unique educational township named after Vallabhbhai, which is adjacent to Karamsad, the native village of Sardar Patel, is about 5 kms away from Anand, the famous milk-city of Gujarat, known for Amul Dairy and National Dairy Development Board (NDDB).
Today, the University, which had a humble beginning in 1955, without any financial support from the government in the first two years, celebrated its golden jubilee in the year 2006-07, and has every reason to continue with a great sense of satisfaction and jubilation. It has now emerged as an important center for excellence in higher education, not only in Gujarat, but also in the country, with an international reputation. The University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi, has recognized this University as a “Potential Center of Excellence”, for its outstanding work in the field of Polymers, and has provided substantive grant of Rs. 5 crores to carry out advanced interdisciplinary research in the field of “Applied Polymers”, a status granted to only one university in the State of Gujarat and to only seventeen (out of 370 at that time) Universities of India.
Some of the Departments of the University enjoy national and international reputation due to the scholarly contributions of the members of the faculty. 82 per cent of its 193 post-graduate teachers hold a PhD degree as the highest specialization. More than 30 per cent of its teachers have acquired international recognition. It has international l i n k a g e s w i t h m o r e t h a n t w o d o z e n Universities/Institutions.
The motto of the University is “Sheel Vritta Falam Shrutam”.
It means : Character and conduct are the fruits of learning. The crest, besides containing these words, also displays a tree and the rising sun. The tree represents the historic mango tree under which the founders of the township planned their activities, while the rising sun signifies the light emanating from this seat of learning.
Thus, Sardar Patel University is a living monument to the great Sardar in his own native place.
