Challenges: The FMCG sector is one of the most competitive industries in the UK with Food standards, prices and innovation changing on a daily basis. Retailer & Consumer demand for exciting new products at affordable prices, delivered on time and with the highest quality assurances is proving to be a challenge for all Food Producers and processors. This drive is encouraging customers to be more flexible in who they buy from and shopper loyalty is decreasing in a price driven environment.

Within the recruitment market we are seeing that the demand for technically qualified and experienced individuals is exceeding the availability in the market. This means that suitably qualified individuals are at a premium and can choose from a number of businesses. As a result even larger established businesses with strong Brand values have to present a reasoned case for candidates to join them at the same time as paying competitive salaries.

Experience: We have a vast amount of experience recruiting across the Added Value, Meat, Seafood, Fruit & Veg, Dairy, Ambient and Bakery sectors as well as more complex markets such as Food Ingredients and Flavourings.

Challenges: The Non Food FMCG Sector is a market with many challenges and pressures. The consumer demand for development in technology, luxury goods and fashion contrasts with the expectation of price decreases across the Household & Personal Care sectors. The increase in availability of products from the Discounters adds further potential for producers adding an own label option that should not be underestimated with customer footfall increasing in this channel.

The result of this in the recruitment market is that individuals with specific retailer experience and product experience are highly valued. This means that there is a premium to be paid for this experience and that enticing individuals to take on a new project is difficult and requires a clear proposition of why a candidate would want to move.

Executive Search & Selection

At Hudson James we are able to provide a variety of different service levels to meet your needs, budgets and timelines. We have the flexibility to work with you to get optimum results and often this means using an Executive Search & Selection process which can also be known as a retained campaign/search giving you access to not just the candidates actively looking but those who are passive in the market.

This means working with you closely to find the best candidates possible in the time scales that you need. We appreciate that roles often need to be filled in a timely fashion as they can be business critical and not filling a role could have wide reaching implications, from the loss of an existing client, reduction in production quality or simply increased costs from hiring an interim worker. In certain circumstances recruiting a role such as a Managing Director could be so important that you can’t afford to use traditional recruitment methods where the success is not guaranteed.

As part of a retained campaign we would look to meet with you to understand the role, its requirements, company culture and long term strategy and why someone would want to join you so that we are able to represent you in the best light and attract the highest calibre of candidates. We would agree with you timescales for action, including when adverts would be written, when candidates would be interviewed and how you will handle the process. We will provide you support and advice every step of the way making sure you are competitive in your industry and ensuring that all offers are managed and success obtained.

For a retained campaign we will map out the market, your competitors, companies that you would ideally like to meet candidates from and companies with synergies to yours. We will contact on average 100-150 people then provide you a shortlist of 4-8 people per role and each of the candidates will be exclusively available to you until the end of the assignment. We will contact people that you would not usually have access to who are not actively looking for new roles, the kind of person who is doing well in their current role and could add real value to your business!

This process will usually involve a partial payment upfront so that the risk is shared between Hudson James and you, meaning that we can spend far greater time on retained assignments and you can expect a far higher service level. As part of this we will assign a senior consultant with extensive experience in your market to every search with a dedicated researcher to assist in finding the right people in the timescales you need.
